LITTLE PIGS THAT WON'T GO TO MARKET
Not so many little pigs are going to market!
W. M. Cory, Assistant Farm Advisor says the fall pig crop will be the smallest since three years before the war. Farmers have expressed their intention of less pigs to be farrowed this fall and that means fewer hogs to go to market next spring.
Nothing can change this picture much, the Assistant Farm Advisor says, because it is now too late to breed more sows for fall farrow if the farmers had the sows.
California will have ten per cent less pigs farrowed this year, according to an estimate of the California Crop and Livestock Reporting Service. Of course, further reduction could still result if feed supplies are less favorable than anticipated. Recent changes in California hog numbers have been consistently downward. This was largely because of unfavorable feed price relationships.
The fall pig crop tion will be 17 per cent for the fall of 1945, fall pig crop since 1939.
South Dakota is one ca's greatest agricultural wheat, corn, oats, rye seed. It produces cattle numbers, while its products include gold, coal gypsum and chalk.

General Fund Revenues Show Increase Of More Than 74 Million Due to Increased Share of Retail Taxes
State Controller Thomas H. Kuchel this week announced that the general fund cash excess over current obligations on June 30, 1946, was $181,876,555, as compared with an excess of $196,707,757 at the end of the preceding month and an excess of $142,281,788 on June 30, 1945.
The present cash excess, said Kuchel, represents a decrease of $14,831,202 under the excess of May 31, 1946. Of this decrease, $15,144,080 represents the excess of June, 1946, governmental cost expenditures over revenues and $1,201,249 represents nongovernmental cost disbursements. The total of these amounts was reduced by $1,514,127 in miscellaneous nonrevenue receipts, to arrive at the net decrease in cash excess.
General fund revenues deposited in the state treasury during the 97th fiscal year ended June 30, 1946, totaled $360,977,523—an increase of $74,995,842, or 26.22 per cent, over collections for the 96th fiscal year.
The major portion of the revenue increase occurred in the general fund's share of retail sales and use taxes, which increased $58,412,752 over the previous fiscal year. Of this amount, however, only $28,364,478 was due to greater collections of sales tax during the fiscal year ended June 30, 1946. The remainder of the total increase, or $30,048,264, represents a technical increase resulting from the fact that during the previous fiscal year, 20 per cent of the sales and use taxes was and licenses, $3,338,758; insurance companies taxes, $2,047,356; and bank and corporation franchise and corporation income taxes, $1,-408,713. These together with other smaller increases were partially offset by a decrease of $2,196,-680 in personal income taxes, resulting in a net total increase of $74,995,843.
General fund government cost expenditures for the 97th fiscal year, as announced by Controller Kuchel, totaled $327,408,102. These expenditures were partially offset by county relief loan payments of $2,340,494, reducing expenditures to a net of $325,065,608—an increase of $25,563,890, or 8.54 per cent over expenditures for the 96th fiscal year.
Major increases in expenditures occurred in the following functions: Apportionments to counties for elementary schools, $14,-637,967; University of California, $4,307,551; and miscellaneous fixed charges and appropriations, $24,252,095. These together with other smaller increases were partially offset by decreases in other functions, resulting in a total increase of $25,416,421.
The major decreases in expenditures occurred as a result of statutory transfers from the general fund to other funds and reserves, such transfers made during the 97th fiscal year being $18,908,510 less than the total of similar transfers made during the 96th fiscal year.
The increase in apportionments to counties for elementary schools was due primarily to increased interest in attendance day and Thursday e...

Home Agent Gives Rules On Canning
The rule of four to one — at least four quarts of canned fruit for each pound of sugar used should be followed again this year by thrifty home canners interested in putting up the most fruit on limited sugar supplies, says Mabel C. Stone, Assistant Home Demonstration Agent.
Figuring by the jar, the rule provides an average of $\frac{1}{2}$ cup of sugar to each quart jar and makes a moderately thin sirup.
By using some light-colored corn sirup or mild-flavored honey, sugar may be stretched even farther. Proportions suggested are: 2 cups fruit juice or water to 1 cup sugar, or $\frac{2}{3}$ cup sugar and $\frac{1}{3}$ cup corn sirup, or $\frac{1}{2}$ cup sugar and $\frac{1}{2}$ cup honey. Boil the ingredients together 5 minutes and skim off any scum. Then the sirup is ready to combine with the fruit.
The Agricultural Extension Service has available a Home Canning Bulletin including methods, proportions and processing times. Anyone wishing this bulletin may obtain it free of charge at the office, 220 Ramona Bldg., Santa Ana or call Santa Ana 3000, extension 301.

Unsanitary Conditions Hike Livestock Losses
Lack of sanitation is the biggest factor causing livestock losses on farms. W. M. Cory, Assistant Farm Advisor, said this week, pointing out normal growth and reproduction cannot be expected in unsanitary buildings or from unclean feeding and watering equipment.
Workable plan of farm sanitation which will bring added dividends were the following suggested rules:
Don't permit newly purchased animals to mix with your home stock until you are certain of their good health.
Move well animals away from sick ones rather than sick ones away from the well ones.
Mud holes are ideal incubators of diseases. Fence them from livestock or fill them.
Manure piles are a menace. Fence them from stock.
Dispose of dead carcasses by rendering, burning, or deep burial.
Clean and disinfect buildings used to house animals at least three times yearly.
CITY COUNCIL OKEH'S PROPERTY PROJECT
Permission to erect an auto sales room agency in a neighborhood business zoning area, was granted by the city council Tuesday night to Mrs. Frieda Trapp, 324 North Lemon street, owner of the property upon which the salesroom will be built.
The 150 by 150 foot area on the northeast corner of Los Angeles and North streets, is located in what is known as a C-2 area in which neighborhood businesses are permitted.
Cyrus G. Baldwin became the first president of Pomona College in 1890.
Police Officer Injured In Auto Mishap
Painfully injured when their auto was struck and overturned by another car, Anaheim police officer, Earl Vipond, 46, of 604 S. Palm street and Buckley M. Nicholson, 63, of 205 S. Citron street, were in Lutheran hospital here this week.
The accident occurred in Santa Ana last week at Broadway and Santa Clara street. Driver of the other car was listed as Carl Murphy Zlaket, 23 of Santa Ana. He was not held.
Santa Ana police reported none of the crash victims were seriously injured. There were no arrests they said.

Former Court Bailiff Stages Birthday Party
J. M. Gunnett, one of Orange county's oldest citizens, and resident here for more than half a century, last week celebrated his 90th birthday at his home here, 317½ S. Clementine street.
Former court bailiff in superior court, Gunnett retired in 1928 after nearly two decades of service. A native of Pennsylvania, born in 1856, Gunnett formerly managed the Bimini baths in Los Angeles before being appointed bailiff under Judge R. Y. Williams.
Visitors at a party staged at his home included Superior Judge Kenneth E. Morrison, who was the clerk of superior court when Gunnett was bailiff.
Big Catch Makes “Ike” Waltons’ Trip
Twenty Izaak Walton anglers returned last Tuesday night with a catch of 12 barracuda, eight halibut and 16 bass after a successful and lively trip via deluxe sportcraft fishing cruiser out of Newport harbor. Sweepsteak winner with a 28 pound albacore was Dick Martin. Carrying away the booby prize were Fred Hayes and Clifford Jones, July 2 jack pot winners.
Many local fishermen have been enjoying additional fishing trips.
