After every war there has been inflation in the United States. After the American Revolutionary war the value of the dollar fell to 33 cents; after the Civil war its low was 44 cents. After World War I the dollar fell to a value of 40 cents. The story as to World War II has not yet developed.
The Smithsonian Institute was established by an act of Congress in 1846 which carried into effect the will of James Smithson, an Englishman, who bequeathed the United States over $515,000 for the purpose of establishing it.

Fishing Good Off Newport Harbor
Finding fishing good at this time of year, O. E. King, advertising man for the Gazette and his son, Gary, of North Hollywood, who returned to his home on Monday after a visit with his father, spent last Saturday deep sea fishing off Newport Harbor.
Catching a boat at Port Lido Sport Fishing Center at 7 o'clock that morning, they fished off the coast near Laguna Beach, returning to port at 4:30 in the afternoon. Fritz Kemper, manager of the fleet of fishing boats reported large catches of barracuda, yellow tail and calico bass, along with smaller takes of other fish were tabulated among the day's labor. Albacore are now beginning to run, he reported.

HALF-PER CENT SALES TAX ORDINANCE PLANNED BY CITIES
Adoption of a uniform retail sales tax ordinance appeared certain here this week when representatives of 10 municipalities reached agreement on the proposal at a meeting in Anaheim last week, sponsored by the Orange county League of Cities.
Ten and probably all 13 cities of the county will adopt the proposed uniform retail sales tax ordinance this summer with one-half of one per cent assessment becoming effective against all sales on October 1, league spokesmen said.
The tax ordinance will be modeled on the state sales tax and will include items on which the state sales of 2½ per cent is levied.
Three cities, LaHabra, Seal Beach and Tustin, did not have delegates at the meeting, but county representatives were of the Anaheim Youth Gets Prison Term On Morals Charge
A 21-year old Anaheim youth captured in Missouri after jumping bail while awaiting trial on a morals charge involving a 14-year old Fullerton girl, this week was sentenced to San Quentin prison by Superior Judge Kenneth E. Morrison in Santa Ana.
The youth, James Nelson Stroup, was arrested by a detective for a Long Beach bonding company who had put up his bail.
He must serve not less than five years for the offense, according to the penal code.
Stroup was one of several young opinion officials of those cities would adopt the proposals.
Howard Gardner, assistant secretary of the state league, told the city delegates that similar action is being taken all over the state to meet rising costs of municipal operation.
Final action of all cities is to be submitted to an executive committee meeting by August 8.
Canada Spanned By New Highway
That coast to coast vacation trip across Canada that you may have been thinking about has at last become a reality.
For recently, one of Canada's most distinguished soldiers, and directors of mechanization for the Canadian army during World War II, traveled across the newly opened Trans-Canada highway, a trip of 4,743 miles.
The motorist, Brigadier R. A. Macfarlane, not only won first honors for completion of such a trip, the first in Canadian auto travel history, but also won the A. E. Todd medal, donated by the ex-mayor in 1912 for the first motorist to drive across Canada without resorting to use of railroad right of way.
It is generally understood that the apple was first grown in southwestern Asia and southern Europe. It was known to the Romans, by whom it was introduced into England. North America leads the world in apple production.
Grand Parlor Posts Given Local NSGW

Placentia rancher, S. James Tuffree, was appointed to the California History board; Theodore Kuchel, publisher and editor of the Anaheim Gazette, was named to the Americanism committee; and Gerald Callens, past president of the Mother Colony Parlor, was named deputy to the Paradise Parlor, Huntington Beach.
