Relief of Farm Machinery Curb In Sight Here Relief in an acute shortage of farm machinery in this area was foreseen here this week as Stephen Griset, chairman of the Orange County Agricultural Conservation association announced tractors and other farm equipment used by the Emergency Rubber Project at San Clement is now available for purchase. Griset said the Orange County Agricultural Conservation association will arrange the sale of the surplus equipment and issue the pick-up order, which is to be presented at the project, by the farmer. Veterans of World War II, who are engaged in farming, shall have first priority until and including July 2, 1946, he said. Non-veteran farmers, and veteran farmers who have not exercised their priority within the above time limit shall have equally the remaining rights from July 3, 1946 to July 8, 1946, inclusive. All sales are on a cash basis at the fixed price "As is" and "Where is." A list of the available equipment and price is available at the county office. Veteran farmers shall file an application with the Orange County Agricultural Conservation association, 622 N. Main St., Santa Ana, where such forms are available. Non-veteran farmers shall apply in letter form addressed to the above association, Griset said. The equipment consists of tractors, sprayers, unicarriers, tank wagons, chisels, cultipackers, discs, ditcher, harrows, plows, land levelers, cultivators, planters, transplanters, subsoliers, toping machine. Weekend Traffic Mishaps Injure Six Here Three major accidents here at week-end boosted the city's traffic accident toll, saw six persons injured and two automobiles demolished after one car sideswiped another, caromed off a second car and hit a truck, police reported. The injured were: Henry Morgan, 208 Ellsworth street, Anaheim, one of the drivers involved; Melvin Crespin, also of Anaheim, a passenger with Morgan; Mrs. Sena Rathenberger, Santa Ana and Noland Mathis, 407 East Amerige, Fullerton; Clarence N. Niles, route 1, box 376, Anaheim; and James Roseborough of Los Angeles. Morgan, Crespin, Mrs. Rathenberger and Mathis, all received slight injuries following the four car collision at Los Angeles and Vermont streets, after the car allegedly driven by Morgan, struck the Rathenberger machine, caromed off of it into the car driven by Mathis and struck a truck driven by Paul Dodge of Bellflower. All received emergency treatment at Orange county hospital and were released. Niles suffered a broken leg after his machine ran into the side of a freight train at Palm and Santa Ana streets, police said. Roseborough incurred body bruises and cuts after his machine collided with one driven by Frank B. Rustad of Elsinore, at Los Angeles and Center streets. Police said no arrests were made in any of the accidents. Navv Warns Bathers of Jap Mines Japanese mines may wash ashore and explode on contact with California beaches, the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Vice Admiral Forrest Sherman, warned the civilian populace in the southern California area last week. The extreme danger of watching mines while adrift near shore or tampering with them under any conditions was cited by Admiral Sherman in an attempt to prevent mishaps on crowded beaches this summer. Particular concern was expressed because recent reports from Japan indicate that mines manufactured late in the war did not always have safety devices to render them harmless upon breaking away from their moorings as required by international law. Current hot weather with the consequent large number of ocean bathers led the navy to remind civilians that "Japanese mines have reached U.S. areas in the past and very probably will continue to do so." Mine disposal experts here indicated that most mines will float ashore in a fully armed condition and are likely to detonate while rolling in the surf. War Material Sale Centers Open in 90 Days War Assets Administration officials this week announced a sales "blitz" aimed at dispensing with a quarter billion dollars worth of surplus war materials will go into effect at 20 sales centers to be opened at military installations in this area within the next 90 days. The sales will be staged at military, governmental and former Japanese internment camps, officials stated. Aircraft Workers Leave for Homes As Anaheim and the rest of southern California turned to the task of post-war reconversion, the U.S. Department of Labor at San Francisco, this week reported one third of the former aircraft workers who flocked to this area during the war have left for other parts of the country. The report, part of a nationwide study to determine the impact of reconversion on workers, stated most of those leaving the labor market were women. More than half the number that left the area returned to their own pre-war community, their moves being prompted by a desire to return to their families; to seek cheaper living conditions; illness in the family; and a desire to return to former pre-war jobs. DEATH to Wire Worms and Nematodes We now have the new D. D. SOIL FUMIGANT the latest to control soil pests ASK US ABOUT IT! CURRIER'S INCINERTORS Available in both Rustic and Plain Finishes $19.95 War Assets Administration officials this week announced a sales "blitz" aimed at dispensing with a quarter billion dollars worth of surplus war materials will go into effect at 20 sales centers to be opened at military installations in this area within the next 90 days. The sales will be staged at military, governmental and former Japanese internment camps, officials stated. Merchandise valued at $114,000,000 already prepared for sale, will go across the board to veterans and federal agencies. In addition, sales will be given an added impetus with the expected arrival of $140,000,000 worth of surplus war properties scheduled to arrive in this country from overseas war fronts. Bases in this area at which sales will be conducted include the Santa Ana Army Air base and three government warehouses, one each located in Torrance, Downey and Long Beach. Sales also will be conducted at the Kaiser Shell Plant in Fontana and at the Consolidated Vultee Aircraft corporation in San Diego. The unprecedented effort to rid the services of the excess surplus materials stems from two purposes, officials said. One is the desire to return as quickly as possible to a hungry civilian market the flood of equipment being returned from overseas and also to reclaim for the benefit of the taxpayers, the nation's equity in these war-purpose goods. All sales are scheduled to be in operation by September 10, officials said. Internal improvement and the diffusion of knowledge are of high importance.—Andrew Jackson. The Records of California's Establishments Rang Up the Volume of Sales in State During 1945, while Indicative Purchases Were the Year, a Survey of Re- Sale Sales by the Research Department of the California State of Commerce revealed last year's $6,709,271,000 for cent above the same, and 110.5 per cent. National per capita sales was $566 last year, to California's $760. Out caused a $1,074,416, one for eating and drink establishments—18.4 per cent, and 258.5 per cent above carcities—especially of parts during the war resulted in only a 38 per cent in durable goods sales 1939 and 1945. Federal Trade Commission published by an act of Con- Harbors And Rivers Bill Okeh Seen California was headed this week for three new navigational and flood control projects—one to give the state capital and the upper central valley direct access to ocean-born commerce—with the expected senate commerce committee approval of the house-passed $600,000,000 rivers and harbor bill. The projects are: 1. A new 30-foot deep, 200 to 300-foot wide ship channel in the Sacramento river and adjacent waterways to Sacramento, making the capital virtually a deep-sea port, at a cost of $10,742,000; 2. A flood control and small boat navigation improvement in the San Diego river and Mission bay, to cost $5,858, and 3. A deeper and wider navigational channel in the Napa river to Napa, as a cost of $865,000. Committee approval of these California projects was indicated last week after hearing before the senate commerce committee, of which Sen. William F. Knowland of California is a member. It is anticipated that the senate will approve the bill and send it on to the President for his signature. Issue Sweet Potato Weevil Warning Here Southern California housewives and storekeepers this week were requested by the state department of agriculture to examine all sweet potatoes in their possession since June 1 to determine if they are infected with weevils. The request was prompted by the recent arrival of several lugs of sweet potatoes in an out-of-state shipment in which weevils were later discovered. Persons discovering infected potatoes were requested to notify their local agricultural inspector immediately. Agriculture officials said discovery of the weevils may prove to be sweet potato weevils, a serious pest in certain southern states but not established in California.
