RESPONSIBLE TELEPHONE EMPLOYEE wants to exchange 3-bedroom house in West Los Angeles for Santa Fe Gross Off 4 Million; Pay Dividend Sept. 3
Santa Fe's net railway operating income for May was $1,513,-811, President F. G. Gurley announced today as the railroad's board of directors met in New York for the monthly meeting.
Gross income for the system was $29,488,518, a decrease from the corresponding period last year of more than 22 million dollars, Gurley said.
Operating expenses decreased four million dollars he said, from May of last year, amounting to $24,999,846.
G. I. Bill Has Benefitted Over 300,000 Here
As the Servicemen's Readjustment Act, better known as the G. I. Bill, celebrated its second anniversary last Saturday, L. Chapman, manager of the Los Angeles veterans administration regional office, announced this week more than 300,000 southern California veterans have received benefits under the measure.
"It has become increasing clear," Chapman said, "that more important step was taken by a nation to assure the speedy return to productive civilian life of their fighting men and women."
Chapman said the regional office has issued more than 100,000 certificates of eligibility to veterans desiring on-the-job training or schooling; about three thousand have received home, business and farm loans for a total more than $16,000,000; and nearly 200,000 have been paid readjustment allowance.
"More than half of the year's business has been done during the past six months," Chapman said. "As of January 31, 1946, the VA had issued 36,446 certificates of eligibility. The exact amount on last May 31 was 101,940. For the same period the total amount of all loans jumped from less than 5-million dollars to more than 16-million dollars. This enormous increase in benefits under the bill was largely to enactment of amendments to the bil land increase separations from service."
