Once they were Japanese cherry trees but on Dec. 7, 1941, they suddenly became Korean trees or oriental cherry trees. I never thought the cherry trees had much responsibility for the war, any more than thought, in 1917, that calling it "liberty steak" changed the nature of hamburger. With the cherries blossoms came the equally beautiful magnolias which do not have as good a press agent. Sam Pettengill says in his syndicated column that "Our Stars and Stripes flies over the only undefeated great nation in the entire world" since the end of the Japanese war. O. K., I'm willing to let it go at that, but did you ever see an undefeated champion without a lot of would-be contestants trying to get him to defend the title. That's why champs keep themselves in good physical condition. We earned another championship out of the war. The public debt of the United States is now equal to the public debts of all other countries of the world. Thanks to recent increases in population, the treasury has figured that "only" $2118, is now owed by every man, woman and child in the United States. Multiply by four to get the debt which rests on the average American family. "All taxpayers should tighten their belts." This is current advice from the administration, Mrs. Annie B. Hill Passes Away Thurs. Death took Mrs. Annie B. Hill early last Thursday evening after an illness of only a few hours. She took seriously ill suddenly that morning and was rushed to a local hospital where she passed away. Born in Texas 64 years ago, she had been a resident of Buena Park for thirty-five years. She was the widow of the late Clarence Holt Hill who passed away less than two months ago. Surviving are two daughters: Mrs. Kathryn Martin of Buena Park and Mrs. Madge Roberson of Long Beach; three sisters, Mrs. Lulu Hatfield of Westly, Calif.; Mrs. Clara McGregor and Mrs. Lorene Osborne; both of Texas; two brothers, John and George Lamb, both of Texas; three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services were conducted from the Congregational church in Buena Park on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Paul Neerman, pastor of the church, officiating. Entombment was in Loma Vista mausoleum with Hilgenfeld mortuary in charge of arrangements. California sherbet manufacturers produced 5,840,000 gallons in 1945, compared with 5,241,000 gallons in 1944 and 1,420,000 gallons for a 5-year average. Mullendore, Edison company president, announced that the company will spend approximately $15,000,000 for the immediate construction of a new steam station at Redondo Beach to supplement the present generating station on Terminal island. The new plant is required to meet the increasing demands on the company for electric service in southern and central California. Present demands for electricity exceed the most optimistic estimates, and all studies of population growth and potential use of electric service point to continuing growth of electrical load. Completion of the first unit of the new Redondo Beach station is scheduled for the fall of next year, the earliest that a project of such magnitude can be put into operation. Two 60,000 kilowatt generating machines of the most advanced engineering design are on order for the initial installation and plans have been drawn for an imposing steel and concrete station building. The station will occupy the site of a previous steam plant in Redondo Beach. Utilization of milk by California consumers in the form of market milk continued exceptionally high, exceeding 842,000 gallons daily in December 1945, as compared with about 773,000 gallons a year ago, an increase of over 9 per cent.
