Alec Nichols of the Asbury Methodist church in San Diego, one of the most dynamic young preachers of Methodism, will be guest speaker at the White Temple Methodist church each evening, beginning Sunday, February 3rd at 7 o'clock and continuing each evening at the same hour except Saturday, until Sunday evening, February 10th. Rev. Nichols, who is also an outstanding community and civic leader, will speak before the Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions clubs during the week and will also appear in a number of school assemblies throughout the community. He was formerly district governor of Lions International. Nichols speaks on a wide variety of subjects, with his subjects for the week as follows: Sunday evening, February 3rd, "What Is Salvation?"—A basis for Two New Workers On Church Staff Beginning with this week, Mr. and Mrs. C. I. Andrews became members of the staff of White Temple Methodist church. Mrs. Andrews will be director of children's work, and Rev. Andrews becomes pastor of visitation. Mrs. Andrews recently served as director of religious education in St. Paul's Methodist church in San Bernardino, and for the past two summers has been counsellor to Methodist youth caravan groups in southern California. In addition to the usual work of a Methodist preacher, Rev. Andrews was Sunday school missionary for the Montana conference for five years, and for seven years he served in Oregon as conference director of religious education. From '25 too '29 he taught religious education subjects and psychology of religion at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. Since coming to California, he has served as pastor of two churches near Anaheim, namely Costa Mesa and Lynwood. Two years ago he was appointed pastor of the Linda Vista housing project in San Diego, and organized the Methodist church there. Local Members Attend Diocese Meet Tues.-Wed. Representatives of St. Michael's Episcopal church attending the diocese of Los Angeles meeting held last Tuesday and Wednesday were Rev. and Mrs. John K. Saville, T. K. M. Smith, Mrs. Eva Boyd, Foster Warwick and Mason Henry. Rev. and Mrs. Saville attended the Tuesday evening dinner session and heard a most excellent talk by the Bishop of Ansonia. Visitation Teams Of White Temple Begin Program During this week, 30 trained callers of the White Temple Methodist church have been calling throughout the community in the homes of prospective members. To start off the evenings, the callers met at the church for dinner both Monday and Tuesday evenings, preceded by a session of instruction and inspiration, then spent the balance of the evening making their calls and returning for a report meeting at 9 p.m. This is the second in a series of evangelistic efforts in keeping with the planned emphasis on evangelism throughout Methodism. The results of this type of evangelism in terms of new members secured and as a morale builder for the church have been of the finest. These meetings are planned to revitalize the church, and to orient in particular those who are now in the church. Tonight (Thursday) transcriptions from the convention floor will be broadcast over radio station KMPC at 9:30 o'clock. Wm. N. Russell Funeral Tuesday Funeral services for William N. Russell, 85 years of age, were held last Tuesday from the chapel of Backs, Campbell and Kaulbarg mortuary at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Earl Berg, pastor of Calvary Baptist church, delivering the service. Internment was in Anaheim cemetery. Mr. Russell passed away at the home at 314 South Rose street on Jan. 27th. He was born at Hopetown in Bahama Islands. Surviving is one son, William R. Russell of Anaheim. Thirty-seven from here were in the party. The Retreat house is operated by the Passionist Fathers of the Catholic religion, under the supervision of Archbishop John J. Cantwell of Los Angeles. Jimmie Heffron of Anaheim presided over a session Sunday noon, at which plans for a larger Retreat house were discussed. The Rev. John Hill, assistant pastor of St. Boniface parish here, visited the group during the closing session Sunday afternoon. He was accompanied by William J. Lake, parish captain of the Layman's Retreat league. Santa Fe Income Down Last Month Santa Fe's net railway operating income for December, 1945, was $2,184,475, according to a statement released by President F. G. Gurley. This is a decrease of $3,619,476 compared with December, 1944. Gross for the system was $35,-385,021, a decrease under December, 1944, of $7,761,357. Operating expenses were $33,-620,817, an increase of $5,241,052 over the same month of 1944, due principally to an increase of $4,-322,474, in charges for maintenance of way. Railway tax accruals for the 12 months ending December 31, 1945, include $54,299,659 federal income and excess profits taxes, compared with $133,288,566 in 1944.
