Lieut. Exchanges Uniform for Good 'Old Civvies' Home for the holiday season is Victor Payse, Jr., honorable dischargee, of Anaheim, after extensively serving as bombardier-navigator, and instructor of cadets for 14 months in various fields of operation, attached to the 112th Army Air Force base unit with rank of second lieutenant. In civilian life, Payse was outstanding in his electrical engineering achievements, having made detailed drawings and layouts for installation of military aircraft equipment at North American Aviation, Inc., Inglewood, following his school training in this line at Anaheim schools and F. J. C. He received his discharge papers from the separation base, Westover Field, Mass., Dec. 12, after extensive training in flight and bomb schools. He flew as a bombardier flight line instructor, instructed cadets in the use of the Norden bombsight and is entitled to wear the American theater of war ribbon and victory ribbon. Bales Home From Foreign Service Preparing to resume his civilian status interrupted by the war four years ago, is George Harlon Bales, son of Mrs. Lois Bales, this city, machinist's mate 1-c. who wears a host of ribbons, including three Purple Hearts, medals and stars. Among decorations he is entitled to wear include Asiatic, Pacific and American theater ribbons, the Victory medal, Philippines Liberation ribbon, Good Conduct ribbon, Navy and Marine corps medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation. Capt. J. R. O'Neill Now on Way Home Pearl Harbor, T. H.—Capt. Joseph R. O'Neill, of 417 Elm St., Anaheim, is on his way home. O'Neill is one of 1,000 high-point army veterans whom the "Magic Carpet" is bringing back to the states aboard the U.S.S. Randall, one of more than 250 carriers, battleships, cruisers, and attack transports in the navy's famed "Magic Carpet" fleet—left Okinawa, November 28, an was scheduled to arrive in Seattle about December 13. Passengers will go directly to the separation centers nearest their homes to complete the formalities of obtaining their discharges before returning to civilian life. James D. Patin, fireman, first class, 1207 Lincoln Ave., Anaheim, served aboard the attack cargo ship USS Hyperion, which travelled 75,225 nautical miles in the Pacific while carrying war cargo to scenes of important battle actions. At Leyte for 15 days, the ship was under attack 37 times and is credited with shooting down two Jap planes. She was at Okinawa 18 days, discharging cargo in the midst of air, sea and land bombardments. In all, the Hyperion was overseas 23 months before returning to San Francisco with a record of having made 62 voyages and carried 150,000 tons of cargo. Royal palms, often considered symbolic of Hawaii, grew there by chance. In 1849 the wife of a Hawaiian diplomat found some forgotten seeds in her husband's pocket upon his return from a trip abroad and planted them. They were the great-great-grandparents of the stately trees which now are found everywhere in the Territory. One of the original trees still stands.
