Sewer System Is Inadequate
Continued from Page 1
The least overflow, such as a slight rain during the canning season, means that the sewers overflow onto the surface of the ground. That certainly is not conducive to health."
Lemcke's report shows that demands on the sewer system have almost doubled during the last 15 years—increasing 93.2 per cent from 1630 million gallons in 1930 to 3150 millions during the last year. The increase during the last 10 years is 75 per cent.
Basing his estimate on the ration book count, Lemcke places the present population of Orange county at 160,000 persons. This is expected to increase 60,000 in the next five years, then 10,000 a year to 1960, and to reach 400,-000 by 1970.
Add Another Fifth
"If all communities adjacent to the joint outfall sewer were added to the system, another 20 per cent should be anticipated," the report states. "Then the estimated 1970 sewage flow would be 9,360,000,000 gallons, and the daily average, 25,000,000."
"The tide pumping station to be constructed in 1946 will increase the capacity of section one about 10 cubic feet per second, which will give that section available capacity for a normal stream."
Two Meetings Mark Navy Day

told of some of the mistakes made by America after the last war in scrapping some of our finest fighting ships. He urged that we not make the same mistake again.
Ewald Lemcke announced that on the week end of November 3 and 4 a work party would be held at the Kiwanis lodge at Idyllwild to install heaters in the main room and complete remodeling of the kitchen.
George Webb of the Webb Electric Co. and Bill McDermott of the Valencia hotel were introduced as new members.
Chaplain Robert Gordon of the Naval Air Station, Los Alamitos, was principal speaker at the Legion affair, which was open to the public. He told of life on a carrier and voiced the oft heard statement, "the best sea duty is worse than the poorest ashore."
Senator Kuchel also spoke briefly, as did Mrs. H. H. Heckman, commander of the Navy Mothers.
A Navy motion picture, "The Fleet That Came To Stay," depicted action in Japan waters under attack by suicide planes and while the ships bombarded the Nip homeland.
SK2/c Matilda Miller of the Los Alamitos Waves sang two songs.

"If all communities adjacent to the joint outfall sewer were added to the system, another 20 percent should be anticipated," the report states. "Then the estimated 1970 sewage flow would be 9,360,000,000 gallons, and the daily average, 25,000,000."
"The tide pumping station to be constructed in 1946 will increase the capacity of section one about 10 cubic feet per second, which will give that section available capacity for a normal increase of flow for four or five years. The 3528 feet of a jacketed 42-inch pipe there is in poor condition and should be replaced as soon as possible.
"Construction of a 75-foot digester in 1946 will correct the present overloaded condition of the digester, but an additional clarifier unit will be required shortly. Chemical flocculation should be studied to relieve the hazard of pollution at the beach until provision is made to extend the outfall farther out into deeper water.
Intercepter Needed
"To relieve the crowded condition of sections two and three, the overloaded condition of sections four and five, and as a means of reducing the pumping costs of section six, immediate consideration should be given to construction of an intercepter sewer parallel to the existing line."
In concluding his report, Lemcke sums up: "With numerous requests from outside districts and overall need for sewage disposal by many sections of this county, the question is whether to confine planning for increased facilities to the present member cities and sanitary districts, or to plan for relief for additional territory in the Santa Ana basin under a sanitation district."
Member cities served by the system have received copies of the report and recommendations, and the Anaheim council is expected to make an early report.
School Teacher's Auto Is Stolen
A Chevrolet coupe belonging to Miss Gertrude Anderson, a teacher at the Broadway school, was stolen from in front of the school Thursday afternoon, according to a report to police. The janitor at the school saw two youths enter the car and drive away, turning north on Melrose.
The automobile was recovered Friday at Merced, police were advised.
Senator Kuchel also spoke briefly, as did Mrs. H. H. Heckman, commander of the Navy Mothers.
A Navy motion picture, "The Fleet That Came To Stay," depicted action in Jap waters under attack by suicide planes and while the ships bombarded the Nip homeland.
SK2/c Matilda Miller of the Los Alamitos Waves sang two songs accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Seamans of Fullerton.
Wes Westenkuehler, post commander, opened the meeting and then relinquished the chair to Assistant Police Chief Mark Stephenson, city Navy Day chairman, who recently returned from service with the Navy and who is a member of the post. Stephenson expressed appreciation of courtesy of Commander Randecker of the Naval Air Station, in providing the entertainment which made the affair a success.
The observance was closed by Mrs. E. H. Fulfer, who played Taps, then America, on the piano.
Success Is Seen For Annual Fete

Although a good showing already has been made in signing floats for the parade, Johnny Ardaiz, float chairman, stresses there still is room for more and that time remains for their preparation if action is taken immediately.
Kiddies' Parade Ready
While the night parade is the overshadowing event, the afternoon kiddies' parade will bring the usual oo's and ah's of admiration from the spectators, Chamber Manager Moeller reminds. Prides and joys of Anaheim parents will stage their own version of just what a Hallowe'en parade should include, and promoters of the senior event will be on hand, as usual, to copy some live ideas for next year's festival.
CHURCH WOMEN TO OBSERVE COMMUNITY DAY
World Community Day, Nov. 2, and sponsored by the United Council of Church Women, will be observed, beginning with a 12:30 luncheon at the Church of Christ. Effect if Control Is Done
Continued from prices down somewhat lessor believes. It would not affect processing here.
"The only thing that is for the price to remain so high as of the retail market, grades of oranges find their way in would go onto the fresh fruit," on canned officer opined.
Labor Not Affected

All of the spoken industry voiced his price for raw materials up, for the benefit of and of the community. They take the attitude can adjust our prices margin of profit to reduce from any other.

ates a drug store at Corona. Heying's drug store here has been located on the northwest corner of Los Angeles and Center streets since 1917.
The newly-elected member of the city council is married and the father of four children, two of whom are in the armed services. They are Miss Barbara Heying, a nurse in the Waves hospital corps at the Oakland Naval hospital, and Pvt. John F. Heying, in the army at Camp Roberts, who graduated from high school here last year.
Many Civic Honors
Councilman Heying is a past-president and a member of the board of directors and of the executive committee of the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce, past-exalted ruler of the Elks, past-president of the Anaheim Rotary club and a director of the United Drug company.
He never before has held political office and his election to the Anaheim city council came as a complete surprise. He declares he never has entertained political aspirations, and therefore has no particular political program in mind.
"I have no ax to grind and have made no promises to anyone," he said upon being advised of his appointment. "I intend to take the matter with the seriousness it merits; to study the situation thoroughly and to act with thought of the welfare and advancement of the community constantly in mind."

This candid camera shot was made during the annual banquet for employees of the Granada Packing House, given by Frank Belmont at the Ebell clubhouse in Anaheim, October 11. Mr. and Mrs. Belmont are shown, right, at the speakers' table. At left are Mr. and Mrs. Ross Lee Laird. Laird served as toastmaster.
Toastmasters Has Regular Meeting
Members of the Toastmasters club held its regular meeting last Tuesday evening at the Parker House cafe with a large percentage of members present.
Sydney Pellew was toastmaster of the evening and table topic chairman was Don Schneider. Bob Allen served as critic for the meeting.
Five members presented very interesting talks, the first of these being Al Holve who talked on "Humor." Paul Demaree gave a very timely talk on "The Service Man Returns to School," followed by a talk on "An Unforgettable Character" given by Lawrence Plummer. Leroy Ater discussed "Fishing Men" and the last topic Navy Mothers to Observe Tag Day
Saturday, October 27th, being Navy Day, the Anaheim Chapter of Navy Mothers will hold their customary Tag Day sale.
The Navy Mothers here sponsor two wards in the Naval Hospital at Corona and have furnished a solarium for one wing of the hospital. They hope to raise enough to furnish another solarium through their efforts Saturday. They also send Christmas gifts to the Navy boys and make lap robes, slippers, bedside bags, and a host of other things for the patients.
Recently a new pipe organ was installed in the chapel at Corona, bought with funds raised by different Navy Mothers clubs. On the coastal cities these ladies sponsor

prices down somewhat, one processor believes. However, that would not affect the volume of processing here.
"The only thing that could do that is for the price of fresh fruit to remain so high and the demand of the retail market so brisk that grades of oranges which usually find their way into canneries would go onto the market as fresh fruit," on canning company officer opined.
Labor Not Affected
"I don't believe it will affect labor materially, even when the order comes," he added. "Volume is here to stay. America has been taught the value of citrus from a food standpoint, and its beneficial effect on health. It will not soon forget those things."
All of the spokesmen for the industry voiced hope that the price for raw material will stay up, for the benefit of the growers and of the community as a whole. They take the attitude that "we can adjust our prices on a narrow margin of profit to meet competition from any other section."
However, they believe that the trend of post-war prices on most commodities will be downward.
Conditions Chaotic
Another spokesman declared: "We all know that the American business structure is absolutely sound, but that it now is in a state of chaos. We don't know, from day to day, what to expect so long as the government is in charge. However, controls of one price restriction cannot be lifted without lifting all. If that is done, American business soon will be back on the pre-war level, indulging in the competition and applying the initiative which has made American business the envy of the world."
There'll always be a California citrus industry, all declare, seeking to produce bigger and better crops and to employ more labor.
The center of that industry, of course, will be Orange county—and Anahém...

THIRD FLEET!
Note to Admiral Halsey:
WE'LL DO OUR BEST TO SPEED THE
THIRD FLEET'S LONG DISTANCE CALLS
About two weeks ago we received a request from Admiral Halsey to do everything we could to make it easy for his men to place Long Distance calls and to complete them as swiftly as possible.
Today, special pier side telephone centers have been set up and many new telephones have been installed near places Third Fleet units are docking. Trained operators are on the job, and we know that the general public will continue to cooperate, as they always have, in helping to keep the lines clear for service men.
So, to Admiral Halsey and the men of the Third Fleet, we say, "Welcome home! Long Distance calls are still at an all-time high, and there are bound to be some delays. But you can be certain we'll do our level best to be of all possible service."
