Lt. McDuell and his wife are now in Portsmouth, Va., following his recent return from the Pacific theater of operations where he served aboard the escort carrier Sangamon which has seen service from North Africa to Okinawa. The ship is now being repaired at the Norfolk, Va., Navy yard after having been knocked out of action at Okinawa by a Japanese suicide plane, the Navy disclosed this week. The converted tanker was one of the Navy's first "baby flat tops" and in its final action suffered casualties of 12 dead, 13 missing and 18 wounded. Lt. McDuell was thrown into the ocean following the terrific explosions and was in the water several hours before he was rescued. The action took place off Kerama Retto, near Okinawa, May 4. Twelve Japanese planes came in to attack the carrier and nine were shot down by marine Corsairs, a tenth fled from the Corsairs, the eleventh was shot down by the ship's guns, but the last one got through to crash the center of the flight deck. The enemy pilot dropped his bomb just before crashing the American craft. The Sangamon burned for five hours and the crew fought fire without communications, sometimes without control of the ship and sometimes without water pressure.
