Cook and Brandon Meet Saturday In Tennis Finals
News from the tennis courts includes the announcement that this Saturday at 2 o'clock Bill Cook and Ronald Brandon will meet on the Anaheim city park courts in the finals of the men's singles tournament that got under way last weekend.
During the second round of the tennis tournament that proved to be the quarter-finals, Brandon beat Ray Maple, 6-2, 6-3; Dr. E P. Wurtz beat Jenney Knapp, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1; Bill Cook beat Tex Middleton, 6-3, 6-3, and Sam Bogosian beat Dick Walsworth, 7-5, 6-3. Brandon eliminated Wurtz, 6-1, 6-0, and Cook beat Bogosian, 6-0, 6-1 in the semi-finals.
Mixed doubles will start next Sunday at 10 a.m. on the city park courts. The trophy to be awarded is now on display at Kendrick's jewelry store.
Announcement was made today by City Park Recreational Director Paul Jungkeit that bicycle races will be held at the Anaheim union high school on Aug. 30 and will include sprints, distance races and relays. Prizes will be awarded the winners.
American Legion Opens Membership
Now that the war is over, members of the armed forces may join the American Legion while still on active duty, members of the local post were told Monday night following a new ruling just made by the national department's judge advocate. Announcement of the change in policy was made by Vice-Commander Henry DuBois, chairman of the membership committee. The meeting was held in the Legion clubrooms at the city hall.
Plans were made for the Past Commanders and Charter Members' party on Oct. 1. William P. Webb, first commander of the post, is in charge of arrangements for the important night.
Because of Labor Day, the post will next meet on Tuesday night, Sept. 4. Plans were made for the post to put out street flags on Labor Day with Carl Ardaiz in charge.
Milton Kohne presented the annual budget that calls for an expenditure of $3,000 and it was approved by the post. Provision was made for the purchase of eight lots in the Anaheim cemetery.
Roy G. Helsing reported that the annual meeting of the Orange County Veterans Welfare association will be held at the Anaheim Uni School opening in just a time, student body off Monday night at the formulate plans for student activities for the 1945-year. Jo Steichen, student president, presided over thusiastic meeting. With ended, the student office looking forward to an our school term.

Council Hears Monthly Reports
Monthly reports were submitted to the city council last week by department heads and were approved and accepted by the governing body. The balance in the general fund on August 1 was $20,959.45 while the total in the general accounts was $86,386.39. Funds in the treasury totalled $143,507.07.
The public service department set a new high record for collections with $37,910.54 during July. At the same time the delinquent taxes on August 1 reached a new low point of $296.47.
Business and dog licenses brought in a total of $5,701.40. Outstanding business licenses for the period of July 1 to Jan. I, 1946, amounts to $333.
Miss Elizabeth Calnon reported that the library balance on August 1 was $4,910.60.
The Joint Outfall Sewer report disclosed that the city of Anaheim produced 51,359,800 gallons of sewage or 39.3 per cent of the total flow of sewage in the district. The total sewage produced in districts 2,3,4,5 and 6 was 154,007,700 gallons. The master meter at the treatment plant showed that 263,490,600 gallons was produced by the entire outfall sewer district that includes northern Orange county cities. Santa Ana and the Santa Ana Army Air base.
The city of Anaheim purchased from the Metropolitan Water Co. 95,831,500 gallons of water during July and pumped 1,673,300 gallons. Total water pumped and purchased by the city amounted to 97,504,800 gallons. The water level in the city wells stands at 116 feet 11 inches which is considered higher than normal at this time of year.
It was revealed that all black-out paint has now been removed from the city's ornamental lamp standards. The city is replacing Sept. 4. Plans were made for the post to put out street flags on Labor Day with Carl Ardaiz in charge.

Sanitary Engineer Will Address Associated C. of C.
The Associated Chambers of Commerce will meet on Tuesday evening, August 28 at the Normandy Cafe on the corner of Westminster and Huntington Beach boulevards, William Gallienne, secretary, announced this week. The dinner meeting will convene at 7 p.m.
A. M. Rawn, engineer of the Los Angeles County Sanitary district, will be the guest speaker and will talk on the manner in which Los Angeles county district solved a problem on sanitation that closely parallels a similar problem in Orange county.
Ewald Lemcke of Anaheim, engineer of the Orange County outfall sewer, will tell about the sewer and the large, heavily populated area it serves and will illustrate his talk with a county man on which the outfall sewer is depicted.
The unsanitary conditions arising from the western Orange county area will be described by County Health Officer Dr. Edward Lee Russell.
W. L. Farrow of Garden Grove chairman of the association's sanitation committee, will act as master of ceremonies and President E. L. Whitson of the Westminster Chamber of Commerce will welcome the members.

Membership in the VFW Foreign Wars in California skyrocketed to an all-time of 81,784, it has recently announced.
Berkeley Post with more than 7,000 members leads the posts in California in totality. Emeryville has into second place with a membership of 5,500 members is third with 4,985 over erans listed on its roster.
Los Angeles posts report membership of more than while VFW enrollment in Francisco has passed the mark.

City Employee in Auto Accident
While driving a light city truck Saturday evening, Vanus Easkin of 130 West Cypress street collided with a car driven by John Howland Millet of 840 North Clementine street. Both vehicles suffered minor damage, but neither driver suffered injury, according to the accident report filed with the police department.

A.U.H.S. Student Officers Plan for New School Term
With the Anaheim Union High school opening in just a month's time, student body officers met Monday night at the school to formulate plans for student body activities for the 1945-46 school year. Jo Steichen, student body president, presided over the enthusiastic meeting. With the war ended, the student officers are looking forward to an outstanding school term.

All students interested in trying for these positions are urged to begin their preparation now so that they can enter the competition for these honors.

Youth Conference This Saturday At High School
For months, careful plans have been in the making for the second annual southern California Conference of Youth clubs and now all is in readiness for the all day and evening session that will take place this Saturday at the Anaheim Union High school. Mrs. R. W. Marvin of this city, member of the adult advisory committee, reports that practically all reservations for the evening banquet are taken. Harold Slane, member of the California Youth Authority that is sponsoring the affair with the Orange county Youth clubs and adult advisory committee, will be the guest speaker and has chosen for his theme, "Youth Looks Ahead". To date there are 330 reservations for the banquet.
Bob Garrison's orchestra will play for the dance at the Teen Canteen that will conclude the affair.
The convention will be formally opened at 9:45 a.m. with individual youth and adult sessions taking up the morning hours. During the afternoon the groups will give their reports and officers for the coming year will be elected.
Several recreational periods, filled with sports events and entertainment, will also occur during the day.
Registration of delegates will start at 8:30 a.m. and those desiring to make registration can still do so by telephoning Mrs. R. W. Marvin, phone 4431, or Mrs. J. Lee Rogers, phone 3622.
IN SAN FRANCISCO
Mrs. Virgil White of North street is in San Francisco where she went to meet her husband who has just returned from two years' sea duty. Mrs. White has been making her home with her sister-in-law, Mrs. Vera Smith, during his absence.

A recent survey of a large city's hospitals showed 10 percent of its beds occupied by accidentees, according to the National Safety Council.
VFW Membership Highest in History
Membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars in California has skyrocketed to an all-time high of 81,784, it has recently been announced.
Berkeley Post with more than 7,000 members leads the 305 VFW posts in California in total enrollment. Emeryville has moved into second place with a membership of 5,500 members. Quincy is third with 4,985 overseas veterans listed on its roster.
Los Angeles posts report a total membership of more than 26,000 while VFW enrollment in San Francisco has passed the 18,000 mark.
Membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars in the United States is confined to men who have seen foreign service.
