Orange County Family Picnic to Be Revived at Irvine Park July 27 It was 167 years ago that the first white men camped at Irvine park, later known as the picnic grounds and then Orange county park, and in the days of the pioneering of the rich Santa Ana valley families, by common consent, traveled each May day to the grounds for a picnic. Now the fine old tradition is being revived by the Associated Chambers of Commerce of Orange county, the Orange County Coast association, the Historical society of Orange county and the Roads to Romance association. This year the family picnic will be held at Irvine park on Friday, July 27, and everyone is invited to join in the event. It was on July 27, 1769 that Governor Gaspar de Portola and his party, including Father Crespi, first discovered Santiago canyon. Upon their arrival they celebrated the Mass of St. Anne’s day. In succeeding years the pioneer families traveled to the beautiful oak tree grove in lumber wagons, spring wagons, buggies and in carts and on horseback and there enjoyed meeting with other county families. Program for the Orange county family picnic will start at 2 p.m. with recreational games for children; organized sports for adults; bicycles for old and young and entertainment for everybody all afternoon. The picnic supper will take place at 6 p.m. and free hot coffee, sugar and cream will be provided everyone attending. Following supper there will be a short program to present post-war plans for a scenic circle drive over Saddleback mountain from... Permit for Hog Farm Sought by M. A. Cummins M. G. DESpite wartime difficulties, nearly 400,000 additional farm telephones have been installed in the United States since 1940. This increase reflects the intensive efforts of the telephone industry to serve farm homes. Right now war needs come first. But as soon as conditions permit, new materials and construction methods will be put to full use. There’s a steel wire, for instance, that requires fewer poles. Also a new kind of insulated wire that can be plowed directly into the ground. These are two of many Bell System telephone developments that will extend and improve the rural telephone and help provide service for every farmer who wants it.
