WAR BONDS PURCHASE will save scores of l Packing Plant Managers Rebuke Public for Treatment of Jamaicans Merchants in particular and the public at large was handed a stinging rebuke last week for their treatment of Jamaican harvest workers by Manager George Graham of Citrus Growers, Inc., and a coterie of packing house managers who helped to import the men. The signed statement read: "These men are beginning to wonder if they got a good bargain in coming here. They have met rebuffs which no man should be expected to shoulder." Graham's statement then added: "The crux of the situation is the refusal of merchants to cash their pay checks; banks, too, are refusing this courtesy. We can't understand this for their checks are as good as gold." Paid on an average of $30 weekly—after deductions for board and room and savings, the payroll amounts to approximately $48,000 weekly, he said, and added that the Jamaicans spend 90 per cent of their money in Orange county stores. Graham stated that one bank flatly refused to cash the checks and cited another instance where a Fullerton bank was also discriminating. One merchant in the north cashed $2500 worth of checks and later went to his bank to make a deposit. His bank levied a 10-cent "service charge" for PRISONER 11 DAYS Lt. Col. Sidney S. Woods who resided in Anaheim last summer is still stationed in England with the Army Air corps, but expects to leave for China in the near future. He writes that this spring he had an unusual "Cook's tour" of Europe. While on a bombing mission over Prague April 16 he was shot down but was not injured. Shortly afterward he was taken prisoner near Munich but on April 29 was liberated by allied forces. By May 6 he was back at his station in England. WRITES FROM CHINA Capt Ross L. Blackely, AAF, with the Seventh Fighter squadron group, writes from China that he is with an American Chinese outfit and that so far most of his time has been spent in getting his equipment together but that he soon expects to be "working." Last summer he lived in this city and before going to China early last spring called at the Angelina hotel to see former friends and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Macbeth. One merchant in the north cashed $2500 worth of checks and later went to his bank to make a deposit. His bank levied a 10-cent "service charge" for each check and reportedly announced that it was not interested in cashing them in the future. His statement added that recently two groups of Jamaicans were transported to Santa Ana and divided into two groups. He followed one group and watched the men spend $400 in one store. "Some of the merchants are smart enough to recognize the bonanza," he said. Packing house managers met in Anaheim last week and in discussing the situation said, "We are irritated over this cold shoulder. The treatment the Jamaicans receive indicate to us that the chances of getting them to return next year are pretty slim." It has been suggested that they be paid in cash but they are here under government supervision and the government likes to have cancelled checks to help keep its records. Probate of Bertha Case Will Sought In Superior Court Probate of the will of Mrs. Bertha Crocker Case of Anaheim who died June 17, was asked of superior court this week by A. Curtis Case, widower, who listed the deceased's estate as consisting of personal property in excess of $10,000 value. The court ordered an appraisal of these properties. Under terms of the will Case and their daughter, Mrs. Genevieve Fernald of San Marino, will share her estate. It's the FLAME that makes Sgt. Cliff Horton, Paratrooper, Returns From German Prison Camp Sgt. Cliff Horton, paratrooper of the famous 101st Airborne division and German-held prisoner of war for nine months, came back to Anaheim Tuesday and the homecoming was made particularly joyous because, for the first time, the battle hardened veteran made the acquaintance of Cliff, Jr., his two-year-old son. There was a vacant place in the family circle, though, for "Spooks", his 15-year-old dog hadn't lived quite long enough to welcome home his master. "Spooks" died just two weeks ago although the paratrooper's wife, Janice; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Horton of 519 East Broadway, and a veterinary had done everything possible to keep a spark of life in the aged dog so that he might once more lick the hand that had fed him and cared for him for so many years. Sgt. Horton is back to almost his normal weight of 180 pounds but while a prisoner of the Nazis he was down to 110 pounds because of the lack of food and the terrible conditions under which he lived. On D-Day he landed on the Normandy beachhead with the 377th Paratroop Artillery battalion of the 101st Airborne Division. With his fellow paratroopers, he was traveling in a C-47 when it was knocked from the skies by enemy flak. The entire plane crew was killed by the flak and the paratroopers made a hurried but safe landing. On the second day Sgt. Horton was wounded but kept on fighting until he was wounded again on June 10. The Germans captured him then and he was first interned in the city jail in Paris where he was thoroughly inter- E-A-S-Y! ACME ..the beer with the high I.Q.(It Quenches!) And frankly, the hold appliances will still be unrestricted for some time. Remember, we still have a war in the Pacific to win—and many manufacturers of gas appliances are still producing war material. In spite of news about reconversion for production from war to consumer goods, here is the present outlook: How about the POSTWAR MODELS? You may be wondering: "When restrictions are lifted, should I modernize my gas kitchen immediately, or wait for still later models?" Ranges: Manufacturing is still limited on account of the war. The supply is sufficient only for essential requirements under rationing. When present restrictions will be lifted is uncertain, but manufacturing is expected to increase steadily. In order to qualify for a gas range under rationing restrictions, you must have a Certificate from your local Rationing Board stating: - You have no range at all - Your present range is beyond repair Water Heaters: Production and therefore supply are still limited; but if your present water heater is beyond repair your dealer can help you get a new one. (No Ration Certificate required.) Refrigerators: Initial production of gas refrigerators has been marked for military and medical requirements. Refrigerators for civilian use are not expected to be available until early 1946. Heating Appliances: Gas Furnaces are being produced in limited quantities only...and where available, they can be had without Ration Certificates. Portable Gas Heaters are still scarce. Like gas ranges, a Certificate from your local ration board is necessary for their purchase. If you need are not yet available...your dealer can keep you posted on any new ME that makes it perfect How about the POSTWAR MODELS? You may be wondering: "When restrictions are lifted, should I modernize my gas kitchen immediately, or wait for still later models?" The answer is: you can safely purchase new gas appliances WHEN AVAILABLE AND AS YOU NEED THEM. You can be confident that they will be outstanding both in quality and performance! You can expect exciting developments in the gas appliances of "Tomorrow", certainly; the Research Laboratories of the whole industry have been busy working on them. But just as they do in each year's new automobiles, these advanced improvements will come along gradually and progressively. The Gas Industry will see that you get the very newest and finest that money can buy at the time. You needn't put off "modernizing" any longer than you have to!
