Hayden Collier Writes of Recent Liberation
It was in February, 1944, that Staff Sergeant Hayden M. Collier became a prisoner of war in Germany and this week friends learned, for the first time, details of his capture. Sgt. Collier wrote from France shortly after his liberation and said that he hoped to be back in the United States before too long.
In the Army Air Corps, the Anaheim man was flying over Germany when his bomber was shot down. He and the other members of the 10 man crew bailed out at 22,000 feet but only five of them made it safely. He wrote that at first it seemed like the ground was receding instead of coming closer. When he landed he hid his parachute and himself in the bushes but he was soon tracked down by Germans from a nearby village. He was in several different prison camps but was finally liberated by Russian forces.
Prior to entering the service he was employed by Mutual Citrus Products company. His brother, Ira "Tex" Collier resides in Anaheim but his parents make their home in Oklahoma.
