Mrs. Ruby Griffith Soon to Welcome Son Home Mrs. Ruby Griffith and her brother-In-law, Rev. Thomas L. Burden of 506 East Center street, are looking forward to seeing son and nephew T/Sgt. Walter W. Griffith, 23, sometime within the very near future as he is enroute home after having been oversees since last August. He is recovering from a leg wound. Sgt. Griffith is a retired aerial engineer and has been stationed at an Eight Air Force base in England. He is the holder of the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters. Before he was wounded he flew on many combat missions for which he received the above awards. Just prior to leaving for the United States he was aiding in keeping his B-17 Flying Fortress, "Five Grand" in perfect flying condition for the combat crews who fly it on the almost daily bombing attacks on German war targets. He was a member of the 486th Bomb group, commanded by Colonel P. Overing of Orange, Mass. The 486th is a unit of the Eight Air Force's Third Air division, the division cited by the late president for its England-Africa shuttle bombing of the aircraft plants at Regensburg, Germany. Sgt. Griffith wrote his mother that it would take a "lot of walking" to put his leg back in good condition. He will have a three weeks furlough before reporting to the Santa Ana Army Air base for further assignment. Prior to his enlistment in the Army Air Corps. Harold Tompkin Flight Surgeon Visits in Anaheim Lt. Colonel Harold Tompkin son of Mrs. R. P. Tompkin Haster road, visited in Anaheim High school, his many friends have watched his rapid advance and pride. Last June he returned from years overseas duty that took him to England, Africa, Sicily, Foggia, Italy. Following his return he was stationed at Field prior to being sent to mer Field as temporary command officer. He attended Fullerton College and Stanford University after which he took his course at Washington univ. in St. Louis. Before entering army he practiced for three in Santa Barbara and Verona. Sgt. Tom Taylor Now Recovering From Wound Sgt. Tommy Taylor, son and Mrs. T. D. Taylor of 83rd Lemon street, was w March 23 on Luzon, Philippines and is now hospitalized while his parents just re-married a telegram from the War Department. Killed in Action A second member of the family has given his life in the service of his country in the past four months it was disclosed several days ago when word was received that Cpl. Dwight Gray was killed in action in Germany April 2. His brother-in-law, Pvt. J. D. Barnard lost his life on January 5 in enemy action in France. Cpl. Gray entered the service in February, 1943, and went overseas last June. His battery received five bronze stars and a citation for bravery in the Alsace-Lorraine fighting. His wife and their three children, Norman, 5 years old; Dwight, jr., two years old; and Linda, three months old, are residing with Mrs. Gray's sister-in-law, Mrs. Velva Smith at 824 North Janss street. Mrs. Smith's husband is in the navy. Cpl. Gray's mother, Mrs. Lillie Gray of 1021 East Broadway has resided in Anaheim since 1934. Cpl. Gray moved here in 1938 from Ontario where he attended high school. Other members of the family surviving him are a brother, Edmund, who was recently inducted into the armed forces and four sisters, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. D. Downs, Mrs. G. E. Stackhouse and Mrs. Barnard. Cpl. Robert Shull Wounded in Action On German Front 18 pt GOTHIC cRRtas Mrs. Robert Shull of 409 East Chartres street received word from the war department on April 16 hat her husband, Cpl. Shull, has been severely wounded in combat and is now in a hospital in England. While she does not know the exact nature of his wounds she was notified that he is in a cast from the waist down. Spl. Shull was fighting with the 30th division of the First Army when he was wounded on March 26. He entered the army in October, 1942, and went over seas in February of 1944. He trained at Camp Blanding, Fla. Before entering the army he was employed here by the Ward Transportation Co. He attended the Orange Union High school. Cpl. Shudd has a six months old son, Robert Allen, whom he has never seen. Service Ribbons Of Jack Winger Sent Home Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Winger of 330 South Claudina street were given added reason to be proud of their two sons this week when they received a letter from the U.S. Maritime Commission in Washington, D.C., concerning Jack David Winger. Jack joined the merchant marine last July and since December has been at sea aboard a tanker. As a result he has been awarded the Atlantic war zone bar and the Pacific war zone bar for service in the war area. E. S. Land, administrator for the maritime commission, has had these bars sent his family with the accompanying certificates. Jack has also won the right to enter officer's training school when he finally returns to the states. He had recently written his family that he hoped to be back in time for Anaheim Union High school commencement exercises, but that he won't be able to make it now. Had he not entered the merchant marines he would have graduated from high school this June. He holds a rating of fireman first class. His brother, E. E. Henry "Hank" Hodges was in Anaheim on a three-day pass this week visiting with his mother, Mrs. A. M. Hodges of North Olive street. Having been in the army for the past three years this is the first time he has been close enough to "home" to visit with his family and friends. He is stationed temporarily at Minter Field near Bakersfield. Sgt. Hodges is an instrument specialist with a mobile training unit. For almost two years he was stationed at Sheppard Field, Texas. He is a graduate of the Anaheim Union High School, Fullerton Junior college and the University of Southern California. Prior to entering the army he was engaged in newspaper and printing work in Orange and Los Angeles counties. WINS COMBAT BADGE Pfc. Earnest M. Ownbey, with the 83rd division in Germany, has been awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for "displaying exemplary conduct in action against the enemy". His wife, Ruby M. Colonel Harold Tompkins, son of Mrs. R. P. Tompkins of master road, visited in Anaheim last weekend with his mother and was now returned to Hammer Field, Fresno where he is flight surgeon with the U.S. Army Air forces. Well known in Anaheim where he attended Anaheim schools and graduated from the Anaheim Unnion High school, his many friends have watched his rapid rise in the army medical corps with great interest and pride. Last June he returned from two years overseas duty that took him England, Africa, Sicily and Oggia, Italy. Following a furugh upon his return to the States he was stationed at March field prior to being sent to Hamer Field as temporary medical command officer. He attended Fullerton Junior College and Stanford University after which he took his medical curse at Washington university St. Louis.
