Their friends will appreciate it too. Clip this column and enclose it with your letter when you write them.) Lester Bonkosky Killed in Action On German Front Pvt. Lester V. Bonkosky, 22, son of Mrs. Hermine Bonkosky and nephew of Mr. and Mrs. William Bonkosky of 600 West Center street, was killed in action on the German front Feb. 25 and has been buried in an American cemetery in Belgium, his family disclosed this week. S/Sgt Jay Abbott Wins High Medal For Heroic Action A Distinguished Flying Cross has been awarded to S/Sgt Jay L. Abbott, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Abbott of Rt. 4, Anaheim, it was revealed this week. His wife Dorothy Ann resides in Texas. The medal was awarded him as a result of heroic action last fall when he skillfully strafed a Nazi enemy contingent along a road and then served as co-pilot to complete the bombing attack. According to the news release Sgt. Abbott sighted the enemy troops alongside a road while headed toward a bombing objective and requested that the Ninth Air Force B-26 Marauder be maneuvered so that he could strafe the roadway. He inflicted heavy damage to the enemy columns and later acted as co-pilot which "proved advantageous in completing the bombing attack and reflects high credit upon himself and the Army Air Forces," the citation read. Having completed 60 missions with the 322nd bombardment group Sgt. Abbott is now or leave in the States. Verne L. Cramer At Air Force Training School KRESELER FIELD, Biloxi, Miss., — The big job of helping keep America's giant bombers in fighting trim for their aerial assaults on the Axis awaits Pvt. Verne L. Cramer, son of Mr. Olin L. Cramer, R.F.D. No. 1, Box 383 AT ADVANCE BASE Leland Henderson, son and Mrs. M. M. Henderson Anaheim, is now at the training base for the marines at Catalina Island just completed his five weeks basic training. LaMar Smith, U.S.Home on Leave From Aleutians Seaman first class LaMarson of Mrs. Elsie Smith Cherry street, arrived in Monday following 14 months in the Aleutians with Navy. He is on 30-day leave on May 16 will report to Alamitos Naval Air station further duty. Smith attended Anaheim High school and enlisted Navy on July 2, 1943. They recently received a letter from his commanding officer in the 415th Infantry who wrote that he was an outstanding soldier and had died gallantly in action against the enemy. Pvt. Lester made his home with his aunt and uncle the last three years before he entered the service. At that time he was employed at Consolidated Vultee Aircraft. He entered the army on May 6, 1944 and went overseas last October. Lt. Donald J. Davis Pilot in Famous 14th Air Force AN ADVANCED AIR BASE, China—1st Lt. Donald J. Davis, 29, a former supervisor in the assembly department of the Douglas Aircraft Corp., Long Beach, Calif., has arrived in the China Theater and is a B-25 Mitchell bomber pilot with the hard-hitting nese-American Composite Wing, Fourteenth Air Force. Lt. Davis, whose wife, Ana Jeannette Davis, and 15-month old son, John W., reside at Route 4 (Box 354) Anaheim, Calif., has been in the Air Forces since March 30, 1942. The Chinese-American Wing to which he has been assigned is composed of both Americans and Chinese and has compiled an outstanding record against the Japanese throughout China. Capt. Sam LoPorto Lands in San Berdoo, Not Home Anyway it reminded him of home! Capt. Sam J. LoPorto of Anaheim, after 38 months of jungle combat duty, ended up in San Bernardino only it wasn't San Bernardino, Calif.—rather it was the straits by that name in the Philippine Islands. According to a recent dispatch the natives of little Ticao Island in the straits greeted his company Verne L. Cramer At Air Force Training School KEESELER FIELD, Biloxi, Miss., — The big job of helping keep America's giant bombers in fighting trim for their aerial assaults on the Axis awaits Pvt. Verne L. Cramer, son of Mr. Olin L. Cramer, R.F.D. No. 1, Box 383 A., Anaheim, California. Pvt. Cramer was enrolled here this week for Keesler Field's 76-day basic airplane and engine mechanics course, having qualified for the Army Air Forces Training Command technical school with outstanding marks on the Army aptitude tests. His training program includes instruction in maintenance fundamentals, structures, fuel and oil systems, propellers, electrical systems, instruments, engine operations, basic airplane inspection and hydraulic systems — preparatory training for possible entrance into one of the several specialized airplane mechanics courses also given at Keesler Field. 3 Anaheim Men Graduate From Navy Air Schools Three Anaheim residents, now on duty with the U.S. Naval Reserve, have graduated from schools which comprise the U.S. Naval Air Technical Training Center, Norman, Okla., Eleventh Naval District officials disclosed this week. They are Robert Marvin Law, Rt. 1, Box 213-A; Hartley Irving Starr. 312 E. Cypress St., and E.E. Winger, Jr., 330 S. Claudina St. Each man has the rating of Seaman First Class. Pfc. E. F. Hartwick Back From Pacific Marine Private First Class Ernest F. Hartwick, Box 23, Euclid avenue, has returned to the San Diego Marine Base from duty in the Pacific. Serving with a Marine Guard Company, he was stationed on Palmyra Island. The 25-year-old Leatherneck has been reassigned to duty and granted a furlough. The division is composed entirely of California jungle fighters. Af if the festive welcome wasn't enough good fortune he also received word, the same day, that he had been given a furlough to visit the states under the army rotation plan. WRITES FROM PARIS Writing just before Easter from Paris, WAC Edith Parks tells about her new Easter outfit, the recently issued off-duty sports dress of the WAC's. She said that it was a "grand feeling to wear a dress again" and then told how the women in Paris were beginning to appear, in gay clothes. Knowing that so many Anaheim boys are in Europe she is still hoping for an "Anaheim day in Gay Paree." She had recently enjoyed a trip out in the country and said that it was much like home excepting for the lack of orange blossoms. Luzon Dispatch Tells of Brothers Recent Reunion With the 32d Infantry Division in Pangasinan Province, Luzon, P.I.—The topic of conversation was not about the Army when Staff Sergeant William Fassel and his brother, Pvt. Dick Fassel met for the first time since Easter of 1942. William and Dick are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. William Fassel, 808 N. Zeyn St., Anaheim, California. Sergeant Fassel is in the 185th Inf. of the 40th Infantry Division. Pvt. Fassel is with Division Artillery of the 32nd Infantry Division. For the first time in the campaigns of the Southwest Pacific, the two Divisions have been in the same operation. Though Luzon is a big place, Sergeant Fassel got permission and a pass to look up his brother. Dick entered the Army in July of 1943 and came overseas in January of 1944, and has been in the Wire Section as a Switchboard Operator since joining the 32d "Red Arrow" Division. Since the above dispatch was written Sgt. Fassel has written his parents that he is in a hospital on Negros Island where he is recovering from a slight hernia disorder, but he reports that he is getting along fine. WOUNDED Pvt. Velasques, husband of Mrs Domingo Velasquez of 1138 Swan street, has been wounded in action in South Pacific fighting. Everybody reads The Gazette. He enlisted in the U.S. following his graduation from Anaheim Union High school at U.S.C. and U.C.L.A. to Ft. Schuyler, New York; he entered midshipmen and received his commission prior to going to Great Britain. His brother, Lt. Art Shirley in Germany with Hodge Army. He went overseas before last Thanksgiving graduated from the A.U.N.High school in the '39 and then attended school in New Mexico. From there he entered Stanford university where he was a member R.O.T.C. While still university he joined the service last December. His dress is Guy Holman, S2/val Training Schools (B.E.) port, Mississippi. WRITES FROM GERMANY PFC Dale Horton, son of Mrs. W.C. Horton or heim, has written from Ge that he is enjoying the sun over there and every now then even has time to play with other battery teams. He been in Europe since D-Da brother, Cliff, is a prisoner in Germany. Dale would be near from his friends and dress is: PFC Dale Horton, 381, A Battery, 119th A.A.A.Bn., APO 403, care of postmortem New York City, N.Y.
