The first battalion of the 185th to enter Iloilo, Panay was commanded by Lt. Colonel Leonard E. Echols of Santa Ana. Under the direction of the field staff, the 185th captured Manchuriso airfield and many populated places in addition to entering Iloilo. Elton R. McCoy Given High Masonic Honor A high ranking local Mason was accorded signal honor today when Potentate William G. Paul of Al Malaikah Temple of the Shrine announced that Elton R. McCoy, well known Anaheim and Fullerton business man, would serve during 1945 as Potentate's Ambassador to this community within the jurisdiction of Al Malaikah. The Potentate's Ambassadors serve under direction of Virgil F. Frizzel, First Ceremonial Master, who lives in Altadena. Serving with Frizzell, besides McCoy, are Farm Gardens Are Vital to Victory "The farm garden is one of the most important cogs in our huge food-production machine," writes War Food Administrator Marvin Jones in the current COUNTRY GENTLEMAN. "Their importance is easy to see when we consider that the nation's 18,500,000 gardens produced probably two fifths of all the fresh vegetables grown last year. "As this is written the Russian Army is pushing nearer and nearer to Berlin, and our own forces are penetrating the West Wall of Germany. No one can say how long the Germans can hold out. But we do know that the defeat of Germany will not diminish the need for food production this year. "When the war in Europe is over we can redouble our efforts against Japan. There will be no opportunity for a letdown in food production in 1945. "Farm gardens relieve the burden on wartime transportation, especially when combined with a sound plan for home food preservation. It will help relieve the problem of labor for canning plants at a time when there are not enough workers to go around for all of the plants supplying materials and equipment for war. Even with everyone doing his best we will not produce enough canned vegetables for all our needs unless farm families help relieve the strain by growing and canning as much food as possible." Jake Proctor on Leave of Absence Jake Proctor, city editor and business manager of the Anaheim Gazette for the past eighteen months, is on a leave of absence from his duties with Orange county's oldest newspaper, and Franchise Tax Commissioner clarifies time for filing California Personal Income Tax returns. Since the time for filing under the law, that is, April 15, falls on Sunday, the Commissioner has ruled that returns may be filed not later than midnight the following day, Monday, April 16. HAVE YOU FILED California Personal Income Tax return? If single, and your net income after the recognized legal deductions for taxes, and similar expenses amounts to two thousand dollars or more, you must file not later than April 15. Married couples are allowed an exemption under present law of thirty five hundred dollars, and must file if the net income reaches that amount. If the gross sum of five thousand dollars or more is earned, the California tax authorities will expect you to file, even though the net income is less than your exemptions, and even though no tax increases. Some misunderstandings may be apparent as to the requirements of the California Income Tax. If in doubt contact nearest office, but in case you are liable do not fail to file. Information returns for those employed will by law disclose the earnings and the California tax man will be looking for delinquents if the return is not completed when due. Penalties add materially to the tax. The tax rate, after exemptions, is 1% on the first $10,000.00. A temporary branch office for Orange county is located at the Chamber of Commerce, Santa Ana. Jake Proctor on Leave of Absence Jake Proctor, city editor and business manager of the Anaheim Gazette for the past eighteen months, is on a leave of absence from his duties with Orange county's oldest newspaper, and is living in Sunset Beach where he and Mrs: Proctor have purchased a business. While with the staff of the Gazette,"Jake" made many friends among the business people and the townspeople in general. He was an active member of the Lions club, a member of the Chamber of Commerce and a worker with the recent drive for Red Cross funds as well as other civic enterprises. Development of Roads in New Plan Development of approximately 31 per cent of the rural and urban state highway mileage of Southern California to modern freeway and limited access standards will be permitted by legislation now pending it is revealed in a report issued by the California Major Highway Development Committee. The legislation to authorize and finance this development is sponsored by the Committee, which is composed of representatives of five state-wide organizations. The Committee's report shows that of the present total of 4,886 miles of State highways in Southern California, 1,512 miles will be improved to limited access or freeway standards. Of the 1,512 miles of modernized highways, 1,178 will consist of limited access roads through rural areas, following for the most part major routes to the north and east, connecting with interstate routes. A total of approximately 283 miles will be allocated to the Los Angeles metropolitan area, comprising 44 communities, for freeway construction; and the metropolitan San Diego allocation will be about 52½ miles. These allocations have been determined on a basis of area and population, with equal weight given to both factors. IF YOU RE ONE OF those unique individuals making a hobby of collecting initial titles of government agencies and other organizations... This is a gain of $7,058,000,000.
