Legislation raising the Federal debt limit to 300 billion dollars passed the House recently with only four dissenting votes. Reduced to individual terms, that amounts to a debt of $9,600 for every family in America—a $9,600 mortgage on every home and farm in the land. The fact that raising of the Federal debt limit to the $300,000-000,000 mark is causing so little stir in Congress, or even among the people, can be attributed to two primary factors: 1. The American people, during a decade of depression and several years of war, have been conditioned to colossal government spending, constantly and sharply mounting taxes—and a government constantly living beyond its income. 2. There is an air of unreality about such stupendous expenditures, to the average men, and there is little realization that what the government borrows the people must repay. This state of mind has been deliberately encouraged by many officeholders, who have carefully cultivated the belief that the debt need never be repaid, or that it can be wished off on unborn generations. Yet every reasonable man knows, if he thinks the problem through, that the Federal debt is a mortgage on all private property in the United States—a debt which can be retired in only two ways. One way is by sustained in the country, will be proposed, and efforts will be made to keep up this dangerous spending. "When the war is over, we've got to draw in our horns and take care of only the needed things." There can be no denial of the truth of that appraisal—and there are many thoughtful men, in all walks of life, who are trying to awaken the people. Speaking in California recently, Dr. John R. Lochner, executive director of the Americanism Educational League, urged a national committee of experts appointed either by the Congress or the Governors of the several States to study the entire administrative structure of the Federal Government and propose a plan of reorganization which would strip it down to essentials. He declared: "The business of the Federal Government is so vast and far reaching that it affects the welfare and security of every family in America. When the consuming interest of the war effort is over, and we feel the full impacts in the post-war period, we will be shocked at the economic power we have relinquished to the government. We will feel the strangle-hold of bureaucratic control. "Our entire administrative system needs to be revitalized to meet the crises after the war, and to rehabilitate a debt-burdened Nation. We must repudiate the philosophy of unlimited borrowing and spending of Federal funds, and we must curtail political patronage. "We cannot expect two million Federal employees to vote themselves out of work. The reorganization must come from the will of an enlightened American public which desires to restore sound economy and efficiency in the business of the Nation. Otherwise representative government in America will succumb to the imposition of bees by arsenical sprays and dusts." the government borrows the people must repay. One way is by sustained and heavy taxation on every man and woman in the country. The other is by printing press inflation, which might very well undermine and destroy our whole economy and bankrupt us all. The colossal cost of war admittedly has forced the Nation heavily into debt, and there is little we can do about that except to win the war as speedily as possible, and to eliminate as much as possible all waste and extravagance in achieving our war objectives. But every farmer, every business man, every worker who values his right to spend his own paycheck, should be wakened to a realization of the fact that there must be sharp curtailment of all government spending when the war ends, if we are ever to win relief from oppressive burdens and enjoy any measure of economic security. Chairman Cannon of the House Appropriations Committee sounded a warning in this regard when he declared recently: "We will get back to normal when the people wake up. All kinds of schemes, including the President's plan to lend sixty thousand million dollars to foreign countries to help promote jobs Beekeepers Name Public Relations Committee Friday The appointment of a public relations committee was authorized by over 100 beekeepers attending a special meeting at Fullerton last Friday. Allen Dyer, chairman of the Farm Bureau beekeepers department, appointed the following beekeepers to function on that committee: H. J. Crawford, Fullerton, Leonard Soriven, Orange, and L. B. Crawford, Santa Ana. The committee will represent the honey producer's industry in the matters that are of mutual interest between the public and the beekeeping industry. Among the suggestions placed before the committee for early consideration were, (1) better understanding of the handling of poison sprays and dusts by operators to reduce the killing of bee colonies; (2) better handling of bees in transportation; (3) distribution and location of colonies in the county. The Fullerton meeting was extremely concerned with the polling of bees by arsenical sprays and dusts. J. E. Eckert and A. M. Boyce, entomologists of the University of California, discussed various types and materials of pest control used in orchard and field crops. It was felt that with proper timing of the applications in most cases and confining the dusts to the actual property needing treatment, much of the damage can be avoided. Farm advisor Harold E. Wahlberg presented charts on economic trends affecting farm returns and prices. He also reviewed the farm labor situation in Orange County, indicating that the outlook is for a short supply of workers.
