The 40th Division has already seen duty in Hawaiian Islands and the South Pacific including New Britain. The division was first born during World War I and took part in the last days of fighting in France. It was inducted into Federal service March 3, 1941 when National Guard units from California and Utah reported for training to Camp San Luis Obispo, California. California units in the division included the following: an infantry regiment and a medical battalion from Los Angeles and vicinity, an infantry regiment from Central and Southern California, two field artillery battalions from East San Francisco Bay area, a signal company from San Francisco and a quartermaster comapny from Berkeley.
