Wahlberg Back From Farm Meet In Washington
The farm labor situation in the nation and in Southern California will be tighter in 1945 than in 1944, said Farm Advisor H. E. Wahlberg upon his return this week from Washington, D. C., where he conferred with the labor office of the War Food Administration, the Director of Selective Service, and the Agricultural Extension Service, United States Department of Agriculture.
Attending a caucus of the Senate and House as a guest of Congressman Phillips, the farm advisor heard distressing reports from many states following the recent directive from General Hershey to all local selective service boards giving the impression that the Tydings Amendment allowing the deferrment of essential farm workers was practically nullified. Heavy draft of the deferred farm workers and owners will seriously reduce the total food production in the county, was the testimony of numerous congressmen and senators voicing the concern of their constituents. General Hershey, who was present and cross-examined at this caucus.

War Prisoners Help Save Crops In Western States
Prisoner of war labor employed in agricultural fields of the western states earned the government $1,719,176.48 during a six months period, it was announced today at the Fort Douglas, Utah, headquarters of the Ninth Service Command.
In a report to Major General William E. Shedd, commanding general, submitted by the prisoner of war division's works project branch, it was disclosed that several thousand interned enemy soldiers earned that amount by working 626,616 man-days harvesting crops.
Major R. R. Taylor, head of the PW works project, reported that in several instances prisoner of war labor was responsible for saving important harvests, including sugar beet, potatoes, tomatoes and cotton crops in Montana, Idaho, California, and Arizona, respectively.
Prisoner of war labor, he emphasized, is furnished only if free labor is not available in an area and only under the provisions of the Geneva convention.
In addition to working in agriculture, valuable work is performed by prisoners in various non-war industries and at military installations.
The report is based on prisoner of war labor activities in the command from May through November of 1944.
At present, Major Taylor declared, there are more PW assigned in agriculture labor in the eight western states than at the peak of the 1944 harvest season.
Approximately 15,000 were working then.
NON-MAGNETIC METAL IN ARMY HELMET
Non-magnetic metal is used by the Army in the manufacture of steel helmets in order to avoid deflection of the indicator needle when using compasses, the Ninth Service Command Quartermaster declared.
SOLDIERS USE FEMININE CAMOUFLAGE FACE PAINT
Face paint may have annoyed them during peacetime, but today's fighting soldier is using it for camouflage purposes.
Manufactured in stick form to fit a round metal tube, makeup is supplied in two colors in one of three combinations—loam with green, white or sand. Choice of color depends upon the type of terrain.
