The Bazooka Kid (1) A Marine infantry outfit moved cautiously along a trail on the afternoon of D-Day in the invasion of Peleliu. A fresh-faced, 20-year-old bazooka man, Private First Class Robert Bungard of Diamond, O., slipped forward with his buddies. His eyes searched the trail for signs of the enemy. He was in action for the first time and his throat was dry. (2) Suddenly, a fleet of Jap tanks topped the crest of a hill and lumbered down toward the Marines. Bungard dived into a shell hole and waited for the Japs to come within range. He opened fire with his rocket launcher when the first Jap tanks were within 200 yards. His first shot damaged one of the leading pair of tanks. His second blasted off its turret. The other tank of the first pair was only 50 yards away, its guns spitting fire. Bungard aimed carefully, halted it with one shot. His second cards away, its guns As the rest of the tank fleet, estimated to have numbered 20 in all, sought to spread out over the ridge, the young bazooka man aimed again. Three hits were enough to disable another tank. Other Marines of his outfit, who had been doing their best to dig in when the tanks appeared, cheered and picked off the Jap tank crews as they scrambled out of their blazing armor. (4) Bungard turned his attention to a fourth Jap tank. He knocked this one out with two well-placed rockets. The Marines yelled like a football crowd. The rest of the Jap tanks fled back over the ridge. (5) Bungard's buddies took stock when the tanks disappeared. They found that the young Leatherneck had blasted four Jap tanks into blackened wrecks with only eight shots from his bazooka. The whole action lasted only 10 furious minutes but it earned for Bungard the name of "The Bazooka Kid." VISITS WITH SON IN TENNESSEE Mrs. Lorraine Hutchinson, owner and manager of the Dorothy Ann Beauty Salon, left Tuesday AAA AND THE FARMER CROP INSURANCE RENEWED Stephen Griset, chairman of the Orange County Agricultural Conservation Association said today that crop insurance on spring wheat and cotton for the 1945 crop year with flax added to the two previously insurable crops is soon to be made available under the Crop Insurance Bill passed by Congress on December 16, and sent to the President for signature. The new law restoring crop insurance to wheat and cotton makes provision for insurance on an experimental basis for many other crops. Griset pointed out Insuracts on wheat executed in 1943 for a three-year period ending in 1945 has not yet been determined under the new law, Griset added. When Congress invalidated crop insurance more than a year ago, the regulations provided at that time that application for insurance must be made to planting. He said that clarification of these points is expected in the near future. The insurance status of fall-planted flax also remains to be determined. At the same time Griset announced that Congress has appropriated $30,000,000 to be used as an incentive for increased flax acreage in 1945, but whether this will be used in the form of automatic insurance or in acreage payments will depend, he said, on which crop insurance was ministered is imperative; dicated also that crop protection on sugar beets on an mental basis may be made in at least one county where actuarial availability. FRUIT AND VEGETABLE CHANGE AIDS FARMER Farmers should gain a market advantage under a new ord which wholesalers fruits and vegetables must use in figuring their ceilings. Under a directive issued by Office of Economic State wholesalers will be re-add their mark-up to the stead of to the farmers' determining wholesale prices. This action will effective until present regulations can be revised. The new method is expected to shorten the price spread. Open This Sunday Only From 1 For New Year's Eve which crop insurance will be a ministered is imperative. He indicated also that crop insurance on sugar beets on an experimental basis may be made available in at least one sugar beet county where actuarial data are available. FRUIT AND VEGETABLE CHANGE AIDS FARMERS Farmers should gain a new market advantage under a new method which wholesalers of fresh fruits and vegetables must now use in figuring their ceiling prices. Under a directive issued by the Office of Economic Stabilization, wholesalers will be required to add their mark-up to the cost instead of to the farmers' ceiling in determining wholesale ceiling prices. This action will not be effective until present OPA regulations can be revised. The new method is expected to shorten the price spread between the farmer and consumer, and may increase the amount of fruits and vegetables farmers are able to sell. WFA cites the situation last fall when the retail price of onions did not reflect the price to the farmer because wholesalers were permitted to add their mark-up to the farmers' ceiling, which was higher than the price most farmers actually received. If the retail price had dropped correspondingly with the farm price, consumption would have increased. BITS AND PIECES Because of quanantine restrictions on Australian wheat for feed that may be infested with flag smut, the Commodity Credit Corporation has released to flour millers in the Los Angeles area, about one hundred carloads. OPA has announced that effective December 13, a ceiling of $14.75 per cwt., Chicago basis, applies to all live barrows and gilts, regardless of weight. This brings heavy weight hogs up to the higher level previously applicable on light weight live hogs. The Chicago basis ceiling on sows, stags, and boars is 75 cents per cwt. less. The ceiling price of wheat has been increased by four cents a bushel, OPA has announced. MARRIAGE LICENSE ISSUED Rozelle P.
