Thursday, December 28, 1944 SOCIETY WOMEN'S By NORRIS Pho ORANGE COUNTY SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS CONCLUDES SERIES OF CHRISTMAS RECITAL PROGRAMS ON WEDNESDAY Another series of Christmas recitals has been completed by the students of the Orange County School of Fine Arts, an affair that has become a tradition in the studio and one which the students eagerly await each year. The warm friendliness of the studio home further enhanced by the crackling of the Yule-log in the fireplace and bright, gay decorations on the large Christmas tree formed a background for the religious setting of the Creche and the Christ Child, impressing upon the students and guests, the beauty of the beloved Christmas story and the importance it holds in the world today. The following seven recitals were a continuation of the "Diamond", recital held on Dec. 1 when students were presented with diamond set achievement pins, opening the series of recitals held each year. The high school department of the school presented their program on December 8 featuring ultra-modern music. Those participating in this program were Mary Louise Dorr, Barbara Danker, Mary Wright, Marjorie Waterman, Gloria Beninato, Emma Apalategui and Bill Green. David Hanson, leading soloist on the "Diamond" recital, appeared on this program by request, presenting his brilliant work as a young artist. The three-piano performance of Dvorak's "Largo" from the New physical portrait of a Bdudhist Chinese Temple. Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" was played by David Hanson, who had a recorded accompaniment of this beautiful number as played by Andre Kostelanetz and his orchestra. Playing her first piano solo, Rene Bradford was included on this program. The Marine Hymn and themes from Tschaikowsky's Fifth and Sixth Symphonies with recorded music of famed Philharmonic orchestras, were presented in piano ensemble numbers. The program closed with group singing and playing of Christmas music. On Monday afternoon the Junior Highschool girls presented a delightful program of solo and ensemble numbers for their parents and guests, the young artists appearing on this program being Marlene Fox, Jacqueline Whiteman, Colleen Baker, Patricia Fike, Joyce Brown and Martha Ramirez. The Verse Choir, under the direction of Lois Rees Auer, presented the dramatic Christmas reading of "The Night Before Christmas," in a note of perfection in their rendition. Those participating in this phase of the program were Joyce Enloe, Marlene Fox, Adrienne Arnold, Jacqueline Whiteman, Marian Caracausa and Jo Deana Akin. McCullah, presented the third in the series of recitals on Thursday, December 14, with high interest being shown by the parents and guests in the foundation the young students get in laying the base for their musical education. As an unusual presentation the young artists presented numbers demonstrating the methods, with Dennis Chance, Dennis Fallin and Denice Cappaert, presenting special numbers. Wesley Farney very cleverly presented a Christmas reading and song. Another interesting feature of the program was the participation of the children in a game of "Musical Recordings" in which they introduced to the audience "The Waltz of the Flowers" from the Nutcracker Suite by Tschalkowsky, "The Flight of the Bumble Bee" by Rimski-Korsakov, "The Happy Farmer" by Schumann and "The Song of the Plains" and sung by the Don Cossacks. "Jingle Bells," with the ringing of bells from the studio collection including bells from all over the world, was sung by the children and guests. To close the delightful program, the beautiful Christmas story was told and as benediction, "Silent Night" was sung. Accompanists for the group singing were graduates of the Nursery school, these being Patricia Knapp, Joan Shirk and Jim Pearson. Nursery students included Judy Havens, Denice Cappaert, Frances Baker, Doreen Knowles, Judith Johnson, Gretchen Schneider, Gail Peterson, Linda Woodrome, Joan Sparkman, Dennis Chance, Clifford Wessell, Donald Harris, Billy Larson, Dennis Falconze and Bill Green. Special numbers was a piano solo by David Bourne; a reading by Wesley Farney, and a violin solo by Johnny Morter. The conclusion of the series of the annual recital was held on Wednesday afternoon and presented by the Junior girls who played three-piano arrangements of familiar Christmas carols. As a unique feature of this program were the "family" ensembles of piano and singing which included numbers by Carol and Susan Tuttle, Joan and Barbara Mauerhan, Gloria, Marian and Tony Taylor and John and Morey Shirk. Other piano numbers were played by Shirley Pannier, Phyllis Kirchman, Irene Galvez, Marian Caracausa, Doris Holve, Patricia Knapp, Rosemary George, Elva Lynn Glenn, Shirley Roseberry, Ardith Fike, Donna Morris Juliet Stearns, Sharon Crooke, June Jungkeit, Betty Osborn, Virlee Elliott and Katherine Walker. Shirley Pannier also entertained with an humorous reading. The interesting arrangement of "Peter Pan" concluded the program and was played by Marian Caracausa. Family Dinner Party Happy Event At G. S. Davis Home One of the loveliest family dinner parties during the Christmas holiday was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert S. Davis on West Ball road when they were hosts to members of their families on Christmas day. Happy conversation and the gift exchange was held previous to the delicious turkey dinner which had all the trimmings to make a perfect meal. Gay holiday decorations mas story was told and as benediction, "Silent Night" was sung. Accompanists for the group singing were graduates of the Nursery school, these being Patricia Knapp, Joan Shirk and Jim Pearson. Mrs. Raymond G. Ringwald presented the two and three-year-old Nursery students on Friday morning at 10:30 when she held open house for the parents and friends. They were very impressed as they watched the supervised study routine and play in etiquette and music, a foundation that will be of untold worth as their musical careers advance. Tony Taylor, Morey Shirk and Carlisle George sang Christmas solos accompanied by Rosemary George. A group of students including Sharon Dance, Ellen Myers, Karen Elliott, Dennis Daws, Tony Taylor, Sandy Knapp, Carlisle George, Gerry Thiessen and Morey Shirk, supplied the story of the first Christmas as they were grouped around the religious setting. On last Friday evening, the Junior Highschool boys presented works of American composers in solos by Dudley Frank, David Jordt and Edward Glenn. A Mozart theme was played by Buddy Bradford while Phillip La Mori played a Negro Spiritual and Dan Holden a stately Prelude. Davis of San Diego; Miss Corinne and Miss Ruth Davis of Los Angeles, Mr. Davis and the Misses Davis, brother and sisters of Mr. Davis; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth T. Corner and son Tommy of Los Angeles; Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Humphreys and children, Hazel and Johnny of Buena Park, and in the afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. Richard C. Davis and daughters, Barbara, Charlotte and Patricia of Burbank, Mr. and Mrs. Corner, Mrs. Humphreys and Richard Davis are children of the host and hostess and Mrs. Warren is grandmother and great-grandmother to above persons and their children. The only sad note to an otherwise perfect day, was the absence of another son of Mr. and Mrs. Davis, Lt. Frederick L. Davis who is with the Navy and on foreign duty, and whose family was also unable to attend this family gathering. WAR BONDS will buy a stake in your country's future. ANAHEIM GAZETTE WOMEN'S ACTIVITIES CLUBS By NORMA NIPPER Phone 2206 CAROLLING BY YOUNG PEOPLE ENJOYED The young people of the White Temple Methodist church visited the homes of the shut-ins and sick last Sunday evening after church services and sang Christmas carols for their enjoyment. Following this they adjourned to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Held at 416 South Olive street where they were served refreshments and enjoyed a short visit before leaving to return to their homes. After they had all arrived, the young guests with their mothers were escorted to the banquet room where a stage show was presented especially for the benefit of the children. A program featuring clowns with their comical antics, trained birds and many other interesting acts were presented amid the gleeful joy of the young audience. At the conclusion of the afternoon each child was presented with a gift. Lyons, Willard Danker, Kenneth Dymmel, Dan Demaree, Wayne Schultz, Drury Danker and Kenyon Kohne. In keeping with the customs of past recitals, refreshments were served from a beautifully appointed tea table with Mrs. Louise Tate Foss of Fullerton and Mrs. Virginia Boardman of San Marino pouring. The little folk of the studio presented their delightful program on Thursday afternoon. Theory class work was demonstrated and an ensemble of "Silent Night" was played by Barbara Bircher, Kathleen Henry, Virginia Lee and Matthew Wise. Their work was most enthusiastically received by the parents and guests and was most enjoyably presented by the young artists. The last four mentioned students also presented solos. Other students appearing on this program were Mary Joy Taylor, Dorothy Addy, Carolyn Bonner, Marilyn Koontz, Zoe Fort, Kathleen Gilmore, Kay Schmitt, Linda Lutz, Lynn Darling, Bob Bovee, Ben Mattox and Dick Powell. Mamie Hedges, Marilyn Daigle, Carol Fitz and Joan Peacock gave several very clever readings throughout the program. 20th Anniversary Of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Davis Celebrated Amid bright Christmas decorations and a gay, holiday air prevailing, the twentieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Davis of 714 North Claudina street, was celebrated Wednesday of last McCandles and Harvey Nuptials Are Revealed Here The marriage of Miss Helen Joan McCandles, daughter of Mrs. Helen McCandles of 1655 West Adams boulevard, Los Angeles, and Lawrence Jay Harvey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac T. Harvey of Anaheim, which was solemnized on Dec. 10, has been announced to friends here. The wedding was performed at the Wee Kirk of the Heather chapel in Las Vegas, Nev., by the Rev. F. C. Lovett, pastor of the Methodist church there, who read the double ring ceremony. Attendants for the bridal couple were the bride's mother, Mrs. Helen McCandles and Denzel H. Eddington of Long Beach. The bride is a grandfather of Mr. and Mrs. George Fendley of South Los' Angeles street, Anaheim. She is a graduate of Margaret Wright McMahon school of Beverly Hills and is a member of Mrs. Edward G. Robinson's Desert Battalion. The bridegroom has recently returned home after three years of overseas duty with the 18th Engineers forces of the Army. The young couple are spending a honeymoon at Coronado where they will remain until Jan. 4, when he will again report for duty. Mrs. Harvey will make her home with her mother until he is released from active duty, possibly for the duration. Children Honored By Members Of Lt. John W. Music Students Of Margaret Buttree Conclude Recitals The music studio of Margaret M. Buttree on North Palm street, was gay with the songs and enchanted music of the Christmas season as the concluding program in a series of four Christmas recitals was held last Thursday evening. A group of seventh and eighth grade boys and girls presented solos and two-piano ensembles. Adding a note of relaxation to the participating students, a delightful program of three readings was presented by Miss Margaret Cruickshank, teacher, who introduced to the guests the young artists, Kenneth Dymmel, David Lee and Bob Lyons. The students appearing on this program were: Mildred Harling, Judith Cranshaw, Jewell Walker, Betty Allec, Marilyn Schimming, Barbara Robbins, Marilyn Daigle, Celia Hamilton, Janet Stokes, Bob Carol Fitz and Joan Peacock gave several very clever readings throughout the program. 20th Anniversary Of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Davis Celebrated Amid bright Christmas decorations and a gay, holiday air prevailing, the twentieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Davis of 714 North Claudina street, was celebrated Wednesday of last week when members of the family gathered at the home to extend honors to the couple. A lovely lace cloth covered the dessert table and was centered with an interesting and lovely arrangement of two lighted candles nestled in green boughs, silver leaves and red berries, and from which was served the ice cream wedding cake, topped with an anniversary motif and Christmas decoration, along with hot beverages. The afternoon hours were spent socially, visiting and then taking pictures the main features of the gathering. Present to enjoy this happy occasion with Mr. and Mrs. Davis were their three daughters, Mrs. Lillian Fuller of Fullerton, Mrs. Lydia Loescher of Orange and Mrs. Cora Webb of Anaheim, two granddaughters, Miss Mary Webb of Anaheim and Miss Lillian Fuller of Fullerton; Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Nathan Davis and Miss Sarah Davis of Huntington Park; Mr. and Mrs. Peer Davis, Miss Phyllis Leonard and Miss Lena V. Rowe, all of Anaheim, and Miss Lucille Rowe of Lelavan, Ill., neice of Miss Rowe. Children Honored By Members Of 20-30 Annies Club A party especially for the children of the members of the 20-30 Annies was held on Wednesday afternoon of last week when they met at the St. Michael's Episcopal parish hall and were entertained by the club. Not to disappoint the young guests, bright colored decorations in the holiday theme were used throughout the room, with the gift treat the highlight of the afternoon. Mrs. Jack Gledhill served as the "go-between" for Santa Claus and as each child was presented with a gift, recited a verse of poetry. The lusty voices of the young enthusiasts at this, their happiest season of the year, sang Christmas carols led by Adaline Smith who also told the beautiful Christmas story to the guests present. In charge of the gifts were Jessie Triplett and Jean Dargatz; the refreshment committee being Marjorie King, Sylvia Hoskins and Irene O'Brien,, while the delightful decorations were planned by Mrs. Gledhill, Frances Stiner and Anita Plegel. McDuell Weds Glendale Girl At Rites in Taft Mr. and Mrs. John F. Morrell of Glendale, California, announce the marriage of their daughter, Vivian, to Lieutenant John W. McDuell, U.S.N.R., son of Mrs. Anna M. McDuell of Anaheim. The ceremony was held in the First Baptist church at Taft, California, on Monday, December 4. Attendants were Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Burtner of Taft. The bride wore a pale blue two-piece dress with dusty pink accessories and carried a corsage of pink roses. The young couple were honored with a dinner at the El Tejon hotel in Bakersfield. After a honeymoon in Bakersfield, the young couple returned to the homes of their parents for a few days and were entertained at both homes with early Christmas dinners and reunions of relatives and friends before proceeding to Bremerton, Washington, where Lieut. McDuell is on duty for a short period before returning overseas. Lieut. McDuell has just returned from the Pacific combat area, after a year's continuous duty aboard an aircraft carrier. He has been in numerous engagements, most recent of which was the Leyte Gulf battle. Rev. Burden And Sister Host To Relatives Xmas A family gathering was the happy occasion for the Christmas dinner at the home of the Rev. Thomas L. Burden and his sister, Mrs. Ruby Griffith, on Christmas day. Present for the day were Mr. and Mrs. Virgil White and daughter, LaVerne of Bakersfield, daughter of Mrs. Griffith; Mr. and Mrs. Everett Braun of Avila, Calif., daughter of Rev. Burden; Mr. and Mrs. Orin Zimmerman and daughter, Laurel Elaine, of Los Angeles, the youngest daughter of Rev. Burden, and Mrs. Ora Zimmerman of Los Angeles, the mother of Orin. Mr. and Mrs. Braun are remaining here this week and plan to return to their home on Saturday. Longnecker, OPA price specialist. Highest retail price for domestic olive oil in the Los Angeles area will be 34 cents for a four ounce container, 64 cents for an eight ounce container and $1.29 for a pint size container. Imported olive oil retail prices will be 36 cents for a four ounce container and $1.37 for a pint size container.
