S/Sgt. Jay L. Abbott Writes Parents He Is Fine; Homesick S/Sgt. Jay L. Abbott, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Abbott of route 4, box 948, Anaheim, has written to his parents recently advising them that he is in fine health but is homesick and would like most of all to come home in the near future. Several weeks ago, he with his crew aboard the "Cherbourg Comet," a B-26 bomber, was reported to his base in the Ninth Air Force Bomber Base, E.T.O., to be "missing in action" but more than 72 hours after the ship was seen to be breaking formation from the group who had been on a Marauder bombing mission in support of the ground troops in France, circled the field and landed at the base. The ship piloted by Capt. Uriah Harold V. Lemke Is Crew Chief In European Area AT A 12TH AAF B-25 BASE—Technical Sergeant Harlan V. Lemke, 21, of Anaheim, Calif., an engineering crew chief, is a member of a Twelfth Air Force B-25 Mitchell bombardment group which has established the exceptionally low combat casualty rate of less than one-half of one percent. Although Sergeant Lemke's unit has been overseas two years and has fought in the most dangerous air battles over Tunisia, Sicily, Italy, and Southern France, it has made one of the safest records of any combat group in the Mediterranean theatre of operations. Originally, this B-25 group participated in strategic operations, concentrating on enemy shipping, airdromes, and similar German targets. Recently, it has become tactical, giving close support to the Allied ground troops in Italy and Southern France. Sergeant Lemke arrived in this theatre months ago, and has been awarded the European-Middle East-African ribbon with three battle stars. Former Resident Awarded Cluster To 'Air Medal Second Lt. Fitz Several weeks ago, he with his crew aboard the "Cherbourg Comet," a B-26 bomber, was reported to his base in the Ninth Air Force Bomber Base, E.T.O., to be "missing in action" but more than 72 hours after the ship was seen to be breaking formation from the group who had been on a Marauder bombing mission in support of the ground troops in France, circled the field and landed at the base. The ship piloted by Capt. Uriah T. Downs from Woodworth, La., was getting low on gas so it made an emergency landing in France in the sector of the Canadian troops. The airmen, all members of the famous "Nye's Annihilators," are Capt. Uriah T. Down, pilot from Woodworth, La., 2nd Lt. Wilson R. Wisecup, co-pilot of Madrid, Iowa, 1st Lt. Richard G.
