HERE'S WHY PAPER BAGS MUST WORK FULL DUTY
Every new paper bag you use must do as much as three or four used to do before the war. That warning comes from Howard Coonley, director of the WPB’s Conservation Division.
It’s hard for Americans to realize that paper is now a scarce material. But remember—there are tremendous demands for paper products for war use, manpower for cutting pulpwood is inadequate, and inventories of wrapping materials are at a record low.
These days none of us can afford to waste the smallest scrap of paper. If we do—it may mean that grocers will be without paper bags and wrapping paper for considerable periods of time. That would be equally tough on grocers and customers.
The only way we can “do something about it,” is to use every bag and piece of paper over and over—to the limit of its usefulness. Even then don’t throw it away—turn it in for salvage.
Are you using all these ways to save paper in your store?
AT THE CHECKOUT COUNTER—
1. Don’t wrap goods already packaged.
2. Eliminate bag-in-bag packing.
3. Use smallest size bag or piece of paper possible.
4. Fill each bag as full as practicable. Try to use only one bag to an order.
5. When possible don’t wrap delivery orders.
6. Ask customers to return usable bags.
7. Ask customers to bring own shopping bags.
8. Tell your customers about need for saving paper—ask them to save wast paper for salvage.
