WESTCOTT-POLHEMUS BETROTHAL IS ANNOUNCED AT ATTRACTIVE PARTY AT BRIDE-ELECT'S HOME IN ORANGE
The engagement and approaching marriage of Miss Lorraine Wescott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin D. Wescott of Orange, to Petty Officer First Class Dean Polhemus, U. S. Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Dean Polhemus of Placentia Avenue, Anaheim, was revealed to a number of guests Wednesday evening of last week when Miss Wescott entertained the member of her sewing club at an informal evening party in her home at 633 East Maple Street, Orange. She was assisted by her mother and sister, Miss Arden.
The message, "Lorraine and Dean," inscribed on a heart etched on a court whist tally, imparted the information of the approaching marriage, which will be celebrated in the near future. Holding this tally was the closest friend of the bride-elect, Miss Gwen Leininger of Santa Ana. After the announcement Miss Wescott showed her ring. She was very pleasantly surprised when she received a beautiful tolisman rose corsage from her bridegroom-elect.
In the games of court whist played during the evening, Miss Leininger was high score winner and Mrs. Carl Johnson, consolation. The party appointments were carried out in the nautical theme with red, white and blue flowers, gladioli, daisies and blue delphinium, used in the room decorations.

Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Heying Have 25th Anniversary Sunday
"Open house" was held last Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Heying at 514 North Clementine, in celebration of their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary when they had their children at home with them for this occasion and a large number of their friends called during the afternoon to extend their congratulations.
Mrs. Heying is the former Miss Mary Grim, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Grim, pioneer residents of this city, Mrs. Grim residing in Anaheim at the present time.
A profusion of flowers, gifts from friends, were used throughout the house and a lovely bouquet on the dessert table which had for the main attraction, a large wedding cake.
The children of Mr. and Mrs. Heying who were here were Mrs. Jean Rusmore of Aptos, Calif., Miss Barbara Heying, PhM 2/c, Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Va., John and Agnes Heying of the home. Also present were Mr. Fred Heying of Anaheim, father of Oscar Heying, and Mrs. Agnes Grim, mother of Mrs. Heying.
Miss Barbara left on Monday to return to her duties with the Navy and Mrs. Rusmore returned to her home on Wednesday.
Recent Wedding Rites Announced By Young Couple.
Mrs. Mildred Willeford of re- two, Anaheim, announces the recent marriage of her daughter Miss Corrine Hill, to Frank Tallman, USN, TM 3/c, son of Mrs. C. L. Tallman of San Ana. The marriage took place Calvary Baptist church in Santa Ana and was followed by a weding breakfast at the home of groom's aunt, Miss Paul Thomas of 818 Riverine strand Santa Ana.
The bride was dressed in ac- marine crepe with which she wore white accessories and a corsage gardenias. Her attendant, N Katherine Kinnear, maid of honour wore a gray suit with white accessories and talisman roses.
Andy Appling was best man for the groom.
Both the bride and groom attended Santa Ana high school though Mrs. Tallman graduated from the Anaheim Union high school. Mr. Tallman graduated from the school in Santa Ana later attending the Junior College there. He entered the service in the Navy in 1942 and been on active duty for the p nine months and is to report back to his base in the near future.
Mrs. Tallman plans to return her position at the Santa Ana Army Air Base and will continue to make her home with her mother.

Miss Wescott is a graduate of the Orange Union Highschool with the class of 1940, and of Fullerton Junior college. She is employed as secretary in the Orange high school office. She was formerly assistant at the Orange public library.
Petty Officer Polhemus is a graduate of Anaheim Union High school, class of 1938; Fullerton Junior college and was a student of the University of Southern California. He was employed at the Bank of America at the time of his enlistment in September of 1941. He is now stationed at Port Hueneme.

Talmage, Mrs. Carl Johnson, Mrs. Harry Incho, Mrs. Park Walker, Mrs. George Houser, Mrs. Jane Hoffman, Mrs. Edwin Wescott, mother of the bride-elect, Miss Arden Westcott, her sister, all of Orange; Mrs. H. D. Polhemus, mother of the bridegroom-elect, of Anaheim; Mrs. C. B. Cotten, Sampson, N. Y., who is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Polhemus; Miss Gwen Leininger of Santa Ana, and Mrs. Forest Short of Southgate.
Unable to attend were Mrs. Jack Reed, Mrs. Ralph Danker and Miss Frances Clifford all of Orange, and Miss Lorraine Schaffert of Compton.
Navy Mothers To Meet Wednesday
The Navy Mothers club will hold their regular monthly meeting next Wednesday evening at the American Legion hall, the commander, Mrs. Emma Heckman, calling the meeting to order at 8 o'clock. All members of the club are urged to be present as important business will be discussed.
Jean Rusmore of Aptos, Calif., Miss Barbara Heying, PhM 2/c, Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Va., John and Agnes Heying of the home. Also present were Mr. Fred Heying of Anaheim, father of Oscar Heying, and Mrs. Agnes Grim, mother of Mrs. Heying.
Miss Barbara left on Monday to return to her duties with the Navy and Mrs. Rusmore returned to her home on Wednesday.
"Tag Day" Is Successful Event
The first "Tag Day" held by the Navy Mothers club last Saturday, June 24, was very successful, a total of $357.24 being collected with additional contributions still coming in to the commander, Mrs. Emma Heckman.
The members of this organization wish to express their sincere appreciation for the loyal support afforded them in this drive for funds to carry on the work of their organization. These funds will go to purchase supplies for the patients in the veterans hospitals who are returning from the battlefields and who have lost all their belongings. Many items such as bed slippers, tray cloths, bathrobes, are made and furnished to those who need them.
Commander of the club is Mrs. Emma Heckman with the "Tag Day" chairman being Mrs. Laura Tyreman assisted by Mrs. Emma Mendoza and Mrs. Alice Freeman as committee members.
ORANGE HOLY FAMILY CHURCH HAS HAM DINNER
The members of Altar Society and the Holy Name Society of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Orange held a ham dinner last Monday evening at the American Legion hall at 143 South Lemon Street in Orange. A large crowd was present to enjoy the delicious meal.
A variety of card games followed the dinner with prizes being given for the score winners. The money derived from this event will be used for church purposes.

Bride-Elect Is Honoree at Party In Tozer Home
Mrs. Ray Tozer, Miss Shirley Tozer and Mrs. Charlotte Hodgen were hostesses in the Tozer house at 317 East Cypress Street, Anaheim, for a miscellaneous show last weekend honoring Miss Marie Kraft of Orange, bride-elect of Petty Officer Third Class Katherine Burch of the U.S. Navy.
The evening was most pleasing spent, the guests making recipe book for Miss Kraft and a scrambled word contest, prize being won by Mrs. Joel Kraft, the other diversion of the evening. The highlight of the lightful evening came with the opening of the many lovely gifts presented to the honoree.
Delicious refreshments were served at attractive card tables each table carrying out the bride motif. Each guest was present with a corsage of roses and two rooms of the home were decorated with roses. The refreshment course was served to Misses Harpst Barbara Cross, Pat Sanford, Barbara Ferrel, Margaret Lueblem Bonnie Stanfield, Mrs. John Krafft mother of the bride-elect, Ms Warren Hodge and Mrs. Bill Campbell.
Newport Man Gives Life To Save Girl
Henry L. Spencer, 71 years old of 111 Twenty-fifth Street, Newport Beach, gave his life on Tuesday in an attempt to rescue a year-old Lois Cronenberg Buena Park, who was caught in rip tide and carried beyond depth. The girl was saved by former Newport Beach lifeguard Jack Griffith, who was unable to save Spencer.

Event Wedding
Tests Announced
for Young Couple.
M. Mildred Willeford of route Anaheim, announces the remarriage of her daughter, Corrine Hill, to Frank H. Jan, USN, TM 3/c, son of Mr. Mrs. C. L. Tallman of Santa The marriage took place at Holy Baptist church in Santa and was followed by a wed-breakfast at the home of the's aunt, Miss Pauline as of 818 Riverine street, Ana.
The bride was dressed in aqua-crepe with which she were accessories and a corsage of bliss. Her attendant, Miss Prine Kinnear, maid of honor, a gray suit with white accesories and talisman roses.

HARKER-CRISS MARRIAGE HELD IN BRIDE'S HOME LAST FRIDAY EVENING; RECEPTION HELD FOR WEDDING GUESTS
Mr. and Mrs. Chas. A. Criss, Sr., 512 East Center Street, Anaheim, announce the marriage of their daughter, Miss Marjorie Jean, to Earl Kenneth Harker, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Harker of 525 West Center Street, last Friday evening at 8 o'clock in the home on East Center with the Rev. Thomas L. Burden, pastor of the White Temple Methodist church, performing the double ring ceremony before eighty-five relative and friends of the young couple.
The rites were performed before an altar of palms with large baskets of white gladioli on each side and lighted candelabra holding white tapers to complete the arrangement. The lighted tapers were the only lights used for the impressive ceremony.
The bride, given in marriage by her father, Chas. A. Criss, Sr., was dressed in a smartly tailored navy blue suit with which she wore white accessories and two white orchids pinned to the lapel of her suit jacket. Her only adornment was a quaint, very old double garnet bracelet, which she borrowed from her sister and which has been in the Criss family for many years. This bracelet formerly belonged to an aunt of the bride and was brought from England.
Mrs. Virginia Geldman, sister of the bride, was matron of honor. She was dressed in a navy blue two-piece dress and carried a ficers. The newly elected are: Mrs. M. Miller of field, president; senior vice president, Mrs. Helen Conteau orysville; junior vice presidents Mrs. Esther Hendrickson Ana; treasurer, Mrs. Alice of San Francisco; chaplain Ella Calvert; conductor Hazel Shilke; guard, Mr Klugou, and department tary, Mrs. Bertha Bryson erside.

Newport Man Dies Life Save Girl

Mrs. Virginia Geldman, sister of the bride, was matron of honor. She was dressed in a navy blue two-piece dress and carried a bouquet of red gladioli. Mrs. Shirley Bremer, another sister of the bride, was the attendant and she wore a black two-piece costume and a corsage of orange gladioli.
Alfred Geldman was best man to the groom with Louis Bremer as usher.
Miss Edith Brown, soloist, and Miss Wilma Watts, pianist, presented a musical prelude to the rites, Miss Brown singing “Because” and “O Promise Me,” with Miss Watts playing “Ave Maria” and other selections for the prelude. The traditional processional and recessional marches were played for the bridal party.
The wedding reception was held at the bride's home on East Center Street following the marriage ceremony with the wedding guests in attendance. The bridal party and the parents of the young couple welcomed the guests. Mrs. Harker, mother of the bridegroom, was dressed in a pink toned dress and wore a corsage of gardenias. Mrs. Criss, mother of the bride, was unable to attend, being confined to a hospital for the past several months. She sent her love and fondest wishes to her daughter.
The tiered wedding cake was baked by Mrs. E. E. Irwin, who used an old English recipe which has been used for other wedding receptions of daughters of the Criss family. The bride and groom cut and shared the first piece of cake after which Mrs. Irwin, Mrs. Helen Criss, Mrs. Earl Pugh and Miss Helen Harker assisted at the reception. They each wore a corsage of gardenias nested in various pastel shades of carnations and these were worn at the shoulder of their informal dresses.
The reception table was lovely with an arrangement of hydrangeas and crystal candle holders with white tapers.
Mr. and Mrs. Harker spent a short honeymoon at Laguna of Anaheim, Lt. Col. Eugene W. Demaree of Camp Jackson, S. C. in the Medical division of the Army; Capt. Kenneth Demaree, Camp Savage, Minnesota, also of the Army and one daughter, Mrs. Alice Barlow of W. Los Angeles.
Congratulations of the many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Demaree of this city, are extended on this occasion.
VFW Members Go To Convention In L. A.
Mrs. Grace Schafer, president of CFW Auxiliary, and eleven members and delegates of that organization attended the department convention held in Los Angeles three days last week. A line representation of the various auxiliaries from over the state were present.
Mrs. Lola Conners, department president, presided over the convention with the highlight of the meeting being the election of officiating members.

Aunt Pleased Over Nomination of Gov. Dewey
Mrs. Henry Warren, 132 West Ninth Street, Buena Park, aunt of the GOP presidential nominee Thomas E. Dewey, Wednesday expressed her delight over her nephew's nomination. She said she would not send him a congratulatory telegram but would write him a long letter later, because she knew he would receive so many from over the nation.
Mrs. Warren is a sister of Mrs. George M. Dewey, mother of the New York governor. Several years ago when Gov. Dewey was on the west coast, Mrs. Warren was his guest at the Hollywood Bowl where he made an appeal on behalf of the USO.
