Methodist Church To Entertain At Special Events Octogenarian Lays Down Rules For Safety On Highway Speaking from long years of railway and highway experience, William Geerdes, West La Palma avenue, has embodied some of his conclusions in what he calls a "New Year Suggestion." He says: "Stop killing people! "A driver should have his car under control at all times. Work to make all main highways into four-lane roads. Have more stop signs where two highway cross; have clearer street names and better house numbers. "This is the way I see it after two years' railroad experience, 21 years of street car work and 25 years of automobile driving, in all of which I have never yet injured a single person. (signed): William H. Geerdes." Mr. Geerdes, who on July 29 observed his 82nd birthday anniversary, has lived in Anaheim for the past 37 years, since retirement from active life as a streetcar conductor in Chicago. He served in this capacity for 21 years, during which time he was noted for never failing to meet his schedule. For the past 20 or more years he has operated his small valencia grove at the West La Palma avenue address, generously sharing Final Rites Held For Mrs. Eger Funeral services yesterday morning in the Hilgenfeld chapel were conducted by the Reverend Thomas L. Burden for Mrs. Ada Neff Eger, long active in membership of White Temple Methodist church. Mrs. Eger's death Monday morning at the family home, 55 South Lemon street, followed by long illness. She was 82 years old, a native of Pennsylvania, but a resident of Anaheim for the past 17 years after many years spent in Nebraska. Surviving members of the family include her husband, Dr. Eger, well-known Anaheim realtor; three daughters and son, Mrs. Mary N. Parker, Mr. Marguerite E. Lyons, Mrs. Helena A. Read, North Hollywood, and Paul L. Eger, Beverly Hills, together with nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, with sister and two brothers, Mrs. Maigret Robb, Wyoming, Henna Warren Neff, Nebraska, and Benjamin Landis Neff, Utah. Entombment was in Forest Lawn mausoleum, Glendale. Citrus Growers To Hear Report On Rainfall, Erosion Dr. Maurice Donnelly of the University of California citrus experiment station, Riverside, will be the guest of the KFI No-Farm Reporter on Wednesday January 5. Dr. Donnelly has been engaged in investigational work in chard management and soil control and has been particularly interested in the cycles of rainfall. This interval will be followed by a friendly social time during which coffee and cake will be served. The final hour of the old year will be spent in testimony and prayer as a Christian church's fitting farewell to 1943 and welcome to the new year of 1944. Methodist Church To Entertain At Special Events In addition to the annual Candlelight Communion service with which White Temple Methodist church will observe New Year's Eve tomorrow night at 7:30 o'clock, that church and its pastor, Rev. Thomas L. Burden, will have special services Sunday night at 7:30 featuring Miss Jessie Marguerite Twinem, recently returned on the steamer Gripsholm as one of the hundreds of American evacuees from Occupied China. Miss Twinem, daughter of the F. F. Twinems of E. North street, is making this appearance in her home church as the only speaking engagement she will fulfill for some time to come. As a result of her long period in a Japanese prison camp and her arduous duties during five years in occupied China, her physicians have placed her on a strict rest regime. The mission board has seconded these instructions, and asked that she refrain from all public appearances for the time being. Because of the importance of this one public appearance, the congregation of Wesley Methodist church will be present and other friends are expected to tax the seating capacity of White Temple. Tomorrow night's Candlelight Communion in the church is the congregation's manner of annually observing New Year's Eve. The choir is preparing special music to aid in the beautiful ritual, and everyone is invited to be present and take part. Dancers To Enjoy New Year Fun At Harmony Ballroom Since dancing the Old Year out and the New Year is a favorite way of celebrating the season, “Dick” Dickinson has announced a gala New Year’s Eve “fun fest” for Friday night out at Harmony Park ballroom, Manchester and Broadway. His arrangements include souvenirs for all the merrymakers, in the form of amusing carnival hats and all sorts of horns and whistles with which to celebrate the advent of the New Year. His popular orchestra music for dancing will be of paramount interest of course, and the program will feature Clarice Young and her lilting songs of yesterday and today. The merriment will begin as early as 9:30 o’clock and continue until 12:30, to permit the traditional noisy welcome to 1944. After a half hour interval, dancing will be resumed to continue until 4 a.m. which will be near enough dawn to suit even the most carefree of revelers. Harmony Park ballroom has completed nine months of successful operation, during which “Dick” Dickinson and his modern music have drawn an attendance that has passed the 15,000 mark.
