GIBBS LUMBER Three Retail Yards Anaheim-Fullerton-Placentia DELIVERY OF Building Materials Lions To Hold Crippled Children's Party; Marks Speaks On Agriculture Following its usual custom the Anaheim Lions club will again be hosts at a Christmas tree and party to be given at the Elks club at noon on Friday, December 17, for the crippled children of the city. A large group of Lions are working on the project and it is certain that all the crippled children will be remembered by Old Santa Claus who will be there in person to greet and cheer these handicapped and shut-ins who are never forgotten by the Lions. If there are crippled children in the city who do not have transportation to come to the Christmas party they will be sent for and returned to their homes, if any member of the Lions club is informed. It was also announced at last Friday's regular meeting of the club by Roy Mendoza that the Lions ladies' night and Christmas tree party would be held the same evening, Friday, December 17. This event will open with a turkey dinner in the club dining room, participated in also by the wives and children of club members. The dinner will be served at 6:30, to be followed by the Christmas tree unveiling and distribution of gifts. After a year's administration of an entirely wrong policy in regard to the handling of citrus fruits, during which time the orange growers took the punishment, the program is now being changed by the War Food Administration, the speaker said. As an illustration of the injustice suffered by some of the farm producers, Marks cited the lima bean situation which is local to this county. Growers are receiving $8.00 per hundred for their beans, although their proven cost is now $8.40 per hundred. "The producer gets what is left after OPA sets the selling price for all the mid-done. Bert Arnold, personnel director at the Granada Orange Packing company, was formally inducted as a new member of the club. District President Louis Hoskins made the initiation speech and O. E. Hansen, past president of the club and sponsor of the new member, presented Arnold with the Lions lapel pin. George E. Holyoke of the city engineering department was introduced as a visitor by Lion A. C. Riutcel. M. E. Beebe reported that the Marywood Central high school would enter the speaking contests. Also, that the Anaheim Union high school would have individual entrants, although the school will not officially participate in the project. Program Chairman Glen Hipes introduced C. J. Marks, secretary of the Orange County Farm Bureau, who made an interesting and enlightening talk on the agricultural situation confronting Southern California and other farmers. "Governmental 'regulations' and other interference irks the farmers," he said, "when they are trying to produce the much needed food crops, yet being held down by a group who are trying to force government subsidies into the picture instead of allowing the farmers to produce maximum yields and guaranteeing them a fair return for their labor and investment, as other businesses are operated." The brief, general report will give growers more time for preparation when general cold waves move in, according to Farm Reporter Nelson McIninch. It will not attempt to warn growers of quick drops in temperature, he says, for the noon hour is too early for this kind of a forecast. Specific information will be given men to the consumer. "In England," he said, "OPA's counterpart in that country employs ten lawyers to administer the legal phases of the agricultural program, while here, OPA has 400 lawyers to make the rules and 2,300 more in the field trying to interpret the rules made by the other four hundred." What the farmers need is freedom of enterprise instead of government crutches, and the democratic form of government given back to the people," he said. Marks concluded his talk by requesting a letter writing campaign to Congressmen Phillips and Moorhies insisting that red tape be cut and farm prices adjusted to parity with other commodities. President Fran Elliott presided at the meeting and announced a directors' meeting to be held at the home of Clyde Cromer next Monday night, December 13. en on Clear Channel Station KFI's regular nightly frost service delivered by Regional Weather Director Flyd D. Young from the station of the Fruit-Frost Service, Pomona. The noontime warning will be presented twice on each day's program, Monday through Saturday. It will be heard at approximately 12:01 and again at 12:14. VICTORY'S SONS Serqtin Gust Portl of Columbus, Ga. Two HUNDRED hours in the air over hostile territory! Every minute of it he knew he was in imminent peril from the machine guns of enemy planes, from anti-aircraft flak, from mechanical failures in his own plane. Every time Master Sergeant Gust Portl, army aerial gunner, went up over the blue Mediterranean or over the sandy wastes and barren rocks where Axis air fields were hidden, he could tell himself, "This time they may get me." He was not piloting—he could not choose the course, the dangers to avoid—his job was to stick to his guns. Flight after flight, mission after mission, was chalked up as successful. And always it was Gust Portl who blasted down the enemy craft, calm, accurate, unmindful of danger in tight spots where another man's nerves would snap. For participating in the protection of a British convoy bound for Malta, he was awarded the Silver Star, for 100 hours of aerial combat, the Air Medal, and for 200 hours, the Distinguished Flying Cross.
