Navy Air Corps WOMEN are playing an important part in America and Canada's joint undertaking of getting oil to the United Nations war machine so that it will roll smoothly along the "road to Tokyo." Following the building of the Alaskan Highway, one of the greatest engineering feats of World War II, Americans and Canadians have joined forces again to lay 550 miles of pipe line through the wilderness of the Canadian North West from the huge underground lake of petroleum in the Mackenzie basin at Fort Norman to the Whitehorse region in the Yukon. Here the oil will keep the trucks running along the Alaska Highway and supply the planes and ships off the Alaska shore. The huge undertaking required the transportation of pipe and supplies more than a 1000 miles through the vastness of the Canadian North West. Navy Air Corps Is Opened To 17-year-Olds The quota system for enlistment in the Naval air fleet has been abandoned due to rapid expansion of the service and applications will now be accepted from all qualified seventeen-year-old young men who aspire to become Naval aviators. The high degree of selectivity employed when the Cadet Selection Board was forced to operate on a quota basis will be abandoned. Qualifications, however, will not be altered, according to Admiral I. C. Johnson who handles enlistment in Class V-5 of the Navy's flight training program. Requirements for enlistment in this branch of the naval service are limited to 17-year-old high school graduates and seniors graduating not later than March 1, 1944. Applicants must be citizens of the United States, in good health, and capable of passing a prescribed mental examination. Those found qualified will be enlisted as Apprentice Seamen V-5 and will receive training at one of the Navy's flight schools. Completion of seventeen months of intensified training under the guidance of skilled, veteran Naval and Marine Corps pilots leads to a commission as Ensign in the Naval Reserve or Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps Reserve.
