Marks, executive secretary of the Orange County Farm Bureau and editor of the Farm Bureau news, was the guest speaker at the Rotary club Monday noon. He has recently attended several conferences of farm organizations, including the Regional Farm Bureau convention at Denver. Mr. Marks stressed the need for local autonomy saying, "To gain this objective we must pin our hopes in Congress because the executive branch of the government leans definitely toward a socialized, labor government." He said that in England agricultural production is controlled almost entirely through local autonomy and that the yield and the price are controlled by local boards and the price of a certain product is set ten months in advance so that the farmer knows exactly what to expect. "There is no truth in the statement that farmers are holding up the slaughter of beef cattle," Mr. Marks said. "The farmers want their cattle slaughtered when they are fat and ready for the market but are often held up by regulations emanating from various Washington bureaus." Some progress has been made recently in simplifying food controls and Congress has decreased the powers of the A.A.A. considerably and has almost liquidated the F. S. A. program by eliminating funds for its maintenance. Local committees are now allocating farm machinery and have much to say about the distribution of farm labor. Other changes must be made immediately before farm production can be increased, he added. You're head and shoulders above the crowd in a Rambler coat by HART SCHAFFNER & MARX DECORATED—Lorin W. Healton, Navy pharmacist's mate from Anaheim, shown at the San Diego Naval Hospital after being decorated with the Silver Star Medal for service with the Marines on Guadalcanal. Lorin W. Healton, 33, Pharmacist's Mate First Class, U.S.N., of Anaheim, Calif., a promotion and the coveted Silver Star "for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action." The Navy corpsman recalled how on the night of October 13-14, 1942, the Japs from the sea and air had subjected his camp area to a steady five-and-a-half hour bombing and shelling. "We had to work by the light of bursting shells and bomb flashes," he said. "It was a night of horror you could hear the cries of wounded mingled with the crash of explosives. We were too busy to have time to get scarred. But we did pray a lot." Corpsman Healton worked until dawn treating the wounded and transporting casualties to a place of shelter during the intense and prolonged bombardment.
