Growth Of City Reflected In Demand For Telephone Service Facilities of the Anaheim telephone system are now fully utilized and at present more than 270 people are on the waiting list for service, R. J. Rossberg, manager of the Southern California Telephone Company announced this week. Shortage of facilities has made it necessary for the telephone company to postpone most installations, excepting those for purposes essential to the war, direct defense, and public health, welfare or security, Rossberg stated. Scarcity of critical materials caused the government to restrict the enlargement of the telephone plant in the spring of 1942. It was pointed out by Manager Rossberg that because of the availability of spare margins of facilities provided by the company's long range construction program, which had in view not only the immediate needs of the community, but those in future years, the company was unable to meet the demands of new phone subscribers for quite siderable time after the company had ceased to add to its fills. "In other words," the man said, "shortage of facilities affect the public immediately; the cessation of the many of numerous articles, such as mobiles, refrigerators and did. "Now, however, the problem, likewise, has acute. And until material manpower become available the company has had 'catch up' with the orders there will be a large number persons waiting for service company's files for its entry not only of the Anaheim exile but of all of its some changes, include in excess 200 uncompleted orders. ALREADY in this furious engagement, seven Jap dive bombers had plummeted to earth before his blazing guns. Now Lieut. James E. Swett was swinging into position to shoot down the eighth. The Marine flyer was protecting Allied shipping in the Guadalcanal area. He maneuvered until the enemy plane was lined up in his sights. He pressed the trigger button and watched expectantly... nothing happened! He realized quickly that his guns were empty—that he could not even defend himself now. His only course was to return to his field. As the lieutenant pulled reluctantly out of the dogfight, a Jap rear seat gunner fired a burst into the American plane, disabling it. Lieut. Swett suffered serious injuries in a crash landing. Fortunately, rescuers were nearby, and they carried this daring flyer to a base hospital. Seven planes bagged in one flight! The 22-year-old ace from San Mateo, Calif., has set a mark for every fighting pilot to "shoot at." Keep 'Em Flying — Buy War Bonds and Stamps! HEYING'S PHARMACY THE REXALL STORE 101 W. OPA Provides Means To Ship Food Gift Packages Overseas For the convenience of those in this country who plan to send gift packages overseas, the OPA explained two simple methods which are available for their use in sending rationed foods to their friends and relatives abroad. Both were planned to cut time and work to minimum. Here is how the person sending the package of rationed food overseas should go about doing it: Persons who make such shipments themselves may get the points necessary for buying the rationed foods by applying to the OPA. Those who wish to have the dealer from whom the food is bought arrange for its shipment, may make the purchase without giving up ration stamps. Here is how the person sending package of rationed food overseas should go about doing it: Persons who make such shipments themselves may get the points necessary for buying the rationed foods by applying to the OPA. Those who wish to have the dealer from whom the food is bought arrange for its shipment, may make the purchase without giving up ration stamps. This is possible because OPA will replace one point value of the food the dealer exports. These provisions apply not only to shipments during the holiday season, but at any other time of the year. Application for points made at the district OPA office, at 1031 S. Broadway, Los Angeles. Applications should show: Name and address of applicant. Port (or other shipping point) from which the food will be shipped, and method of shipment. Name and address of the person to whom food is being shipped. The number and kind of points meats or processed foods) for which application is made. After the food packages for which the extra ration points used are shipped, OPA requires that a copy of the export declaration or certificate of mailing be turned over to the OPA district office which granted the points, as proof that the extra food rations were actually used for the purpose for which granted. If the dealer handles the shipment, he will turn the export papers over to OPA. Persons who export foods other than by mail may file the duplicate copy of the shipper's export declaration (commerce form 7525) with OPA. This form must be filed within 15 days of the date of export. Traffic Deaths Soar In spite Of Gas Ration Gasoline or no gasoline, the nation managed to do enough driving in the first eight months of the year to pile up a traffic death toll of 3,470. This aggregate—huge as it may seem—is 29 per cent below the same period last year and 43 per cent under the first eight months of pre-war 1941, according to reports received by the Automobile Club of Southern California. In August alone, the traffic death toll was 1,860, representing a drop of 15 per cent below 1942 and just about half the August total in '41. The August record, however, did follow the usual pattern of an August increase by rising 8.2 per cent over the July total of this year. During the first six months of the year, travel was down 32 per cent. Mileage figures are not available for the eight month period, but all factors indicate the drop in traffic deaths still is outstripping the decrease in travel, the report stated. The largest city in the country to go through the month of August without a traffic fatality was Dallas, Texas, followed by St. Paul, Minn. This marked the second consecutive month in which St. Paul has not had a traffic death. For the eight month span in 194, the largest city in the nation with a perfect record still is Mount Vernon, N. Y., with a population of 67,400. Need help, have a room for rent, got anything to sell? A Gazette classified ad will solve your problem. INCENT'S. We the baby's room you can be sure st! What You Buy With WAR BONDS Para-Ski Troopers When will this war end? Nobody knows, so the Army is continuing its training of Para-Ski Troopers. They're parachute troops who know their way about on skis or any other place in snow covered mountainous country. A great measure of the success of Russia's victories last winter is attributed to these troops who move with the silence of a snowflake. Our work on the home front is not so hazardous as that of the Para-Ski Troopers but it is important that we perform our daily tasks and make every effort to increase our regular purchase of War Bonds.
