IT TAKES GAS TO 'MAKE HOT WATER "HOT"
These wartime suggestions will help you in cooperating with the Government's fuel-conservation program:
AN ABUNDANCE of hot water on tap any time you want it is one of the real luxuries of civilized living, and your automatic gas storage water heater gives you just that kind of hot water service. But it takes gas to make hot water "hot" — and the Government is now asking everybody to conserve fuels of all kinds.
Fortunately, by avoiding waste, you can have essential hot water and conserve gas, too! Here are some suggestions:
1. Don't let hot water "run" — for rinsing dishes or washing hands.
2. Repair leaky hot-water faucets promptly.
3. 140° F. is the best hot water temperature for most home uses. Higher temperature settings waste gas.
When you save gas at home, you help to conserve fuel for the Battle of the Pacific.

Cookery Corner
HOW IS A STEW COOKED?
Brown the Meat
For richer color and more flavor brown the meat on all sides in its own fat or in a small amount of drippings. Season, cover with water, cover kettle, and simmer until tender.
Add Vegetables Later
To prevent over-cooking, add whole carrots and onions about 40 minutes before meat is done. About 15 minutes before serving the stew, add four quarters of a head of cabbage.
Serve Attractively

No Availability Certificates Are Needed On Farms
Some confusion has arisen in the minds of farmers concerning employees on farms. Since release a few days ago of certain rulings handed down by the Southern California office of the War Manpower Commission, whereby people engaged in essential activities must secure direct referral from their local United States Employment service to move from one essential job to another.
In order to clarify the matter, George R. Wells, manager of Farm Labor office, Santa Ana, states that anyone is free to work in agriculture without securing a referral card or without an availability certificate. So that our vital food crops may be produced and harvested, our Uniter States government has made it as easy as possible for workers to engage in agriculture, and for this reason they may move freely in any type of work on the farms.
Questions confronting any grower concerning this recent ruling may be discussed at the Farm Labor office, 414 W. Fifth street, in Santa Ana.

We of the Santa Fe are too busy "keeping 'em rolling" for Victory to take time off to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the laying of our first rail.
This is, however, an appropriate time to point out how important to the development of this New West has been the linking together of its States by Santa Fe rails. We are naturally proud to be part of this great development.
