ANAHEIM GAZETTE Established 1870 HENRY KUCHEL, Editor and Publisher 1887-1934 Mrs. Henry Kuchel Theodore B. Kuchel Editors and Publishers The Anaheim Gazette has been owned and edited by the same family since 1875. Published every Thursday at 259 East Center Street, Anaheim, California. Subscription Per Year, $2.00 — Six Months $1.00 Entered as second-class matter at the Post Office at Anaheim, California, under the Act of March 8, 1879. "LITTLE GREEN TENTS" In their little green tents the soldiers rest" and today as we approach another Memorial Day when garlands of memory are placed on those quiet mounds, we are more than ever aghast at the senseless waste of war. Memorial Day was an outgrowth of the Civil war when brother fought against brother. The Civil was is only an event in history to the most of us, although we are children and grandchildren of those who took part in it. The Spanish American war came toward the close of the century, and more little green tents were formed to receive their tribute of flowers and flaunt their small flags on Memorial Day. But again the Spanish American war is only history to many of us, even to those gallant veterans whom all of us know personally and who join yearly; in scattering flowers over the grassy mounds where their once living and vital brothers now sleep. Time has even dimmed the horrors of the First World War and shaded into gentle sorrow, the first tempestuous grief of those who lost beloved sons, brothers or sweethearts. But every war has meant a loss to this country of the finest flower of its manhood, an utterly needless loss. And now we are in the midst of another senseless waste of youth. Daily other little green tents are added to that great bivouac of the dead. And what is gained? If there were man-made agencies that destroyed our harvest fields just as they reached their prime, we would not tolerate their existence. Why then, do we tolerate the continued existence of agencies that wreck our most valuable harvest of all, our youth? Surely with the advance of civilization, man as a reasoning being, does not need to make war in order to settle differences of opinion. Let us by all means, always keep Memorial Day as a solemn and beautiful day for national observance, but let us all think and work and hope toward a future when no more little green tents need be added to those now in existence, because of the horrors of war.
