Southland Lays Claim to Possession Of “Numero Uno Victory Family” In sharp contrast to the rules of the so-called Pachucos, which have stirred Orange county and in fact the entire Southland during the past few months, are records for heroism chalked up by men of Mexican ancestry now serving with our armed forces. From the Los Angeles Office of War Information has come a story of what Howard Langley, director, calls the “Southland’s Numero Uno Victory family” so far as all-out war record is concerned. It is the Cazares family of Los Angeles, and War Manpower chiefs agree with Strickland that if it isn’t the number one Victory family in the nation, it will do until a better one comes along. Jose Cazares and his wife Maria were both born in Chihuahua, Mexico but came to the United States soon after their marriage, so that their nine children were born in this country. Father Jose's eyesight prevents him from working in defense industries, but Mother Maria makes up for it by running a power machine, making garments for women war workers while her husband continues his employment in a Los Angeles department store. Son Art is an Army Aviation cadet now stationed in Tennessee. Son Gabriel, who last year won the National Intercollegiate two-mile crown for Fresno State, is an Army lieutenant stationed at Abilene, Texas. Son Ed, just out of high school, is with the Marines at San Diego. Daughter Mrs. Miguel Terrazas works in civilian defense, Emergency Medical service First Aid, and her husband, Son-In-Law Miguel Terrazas is production manager for O’Keefe and Merritt, a 100 per cent war plant, while their son, Miguel Jr., a high school student, is an Air Raid Warden messenger. Daughter Mrs. Arturo Romero does First Aid work in the Pico Housing unit where her husband, a defense worker at Western Pipe and Steel, is Senior Air Raid warden. Daughter Soledad Cazares is a riveter at Douglas, and Daughter Marta Cazares, a First Aid expert, is secretary to Guy Nunn, field representative of the War Manpower commission. Then there are the nephews and nieces. Alfonso Rendon is Aviation Machinist mate third class, USN, now somewhere in the South Pacific, and Luis Weber of the USN is assigned to the Explosives Investigation laboratory, Bethel Baptists Are to Open Revival Mission The Rev. H. G. Dymmel, pastor of Bethel Baptist church, today announced that the Kraft Twins nationally known evangelists will start their revival mission with the local church at Sunday’s services, to continue until February 12. The pastor will speak at 9:30 a.m. but the avangelists will have the 11 o'clock services and again at 7:30 p.m. on “The Incomparable Christ.” Special music will include vibroharp, accordion, piano and vocal numbers. In relating highlights of their lives, the Kraft Twins today said “We were born in Kansas City but moved to California with our folks when we were only boys. We went to school in California and then started in business together. Then we felt the call of God to train for evangelistic work, and together we attended Los Angeles Bible Institute when we graduated in 1938. As members of the official school quarters we traveled from coast to coast presenting the Gospel in words and music. “Since graduation we have done evangelistic work in the United States and Canada, and have been privileged because of our music to go to Army camps, sanitarium and jails. With our music and our aim of bringing men and women to Jesus Christ, we have found many who believe the Bible to be the inspired infallible word of God, and who are willing to accept Him.” Son Art is an Army Aviation the USN is assigned to the Explo-cadet now stationed in Tennessee. sives Investigation laboratory, Its name is a beacon-light to "Bourbon at its Best" HILL AND HILL Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Also Available in Bottled-in-Bond, 100 Proof SIMON LEVI COMPANY, Ltd. Makes me feel I'm sharing something with our boys off there in the jungles and the desert. Maybe there will be a gas emergency some time this winter as we've been told there might be. Suppose we were asked to use less heating gas—so the war plants can keep going Boston. Oscar Weber, a defender worker; is joining the Merchant Marine; Arturo Rendon is a draftsman for Kistner, Curtiss and Wright, a 100 per cent war work plant; Margarita Rendon and Anita Rendon Lopez are riveted at Lockheed, and Josefina Reddon Sanchez is a Red Cross Fire Aid worker. Besides all these, Jose and Mara Cazares have six small grandchildren, who take active part in scrap drives—and spend all the pennies for war stamps. RATION BOOK TWO The job of printing 150 million copies of War Ration Book Two required 96 carloads of special safety paper and the full production capacity of 18 printing plants throughout the nation. Each book contains 192 ration stamps, representing a total of nearly 92 billion. IMAGINE them making guns and ships and airplanes with gas—the same natural gas we use at home! I like the idea. Makes me feel I'm sharing something with our boys off there in the jungles and the desert. Maybe there will be a gas emergency some time this winter as we've been told there might be. Suppose we were asked to use less heating gas—so the war plants can keep going full blast. Well, it's all right with me—I'll be Johnny-on-the-spot to help. Anything I can do for those soldiers, sailors and marines of ours, I'll do! WHY THERE MAY BE A WARTIME FUEL-GAS EMERGENCY This winter the reserve supply of natural gas for Southern California, and our facilities for delivering it are the greatest known in history. So you may wonder why, if the supply is abundant, even a temporary fuel-gas emergency could ever occur. Here are the reasons: 1. Gas is doing a double-duty WARTIME job—with a network of pipelines designed for PEACETIME! 2. War Industry's demand for natural gas to speed the production of scores of war essentials has first call. 3. Wartime residential requirements have been greatly stepped up—along with the needs of new military establishments. 4. And most important—steel cannot be obtained to expand the present peacetime network of pipelines—because it is more vitally needed on other fronts. Under these wartime conditions, certain situations could occur this winter—such as extremes of weather—when the peacetime system of pipelines might not be equal to the task. Your cooperation in such a temporary emergency will be a war service of vital importance.
