Jigs and Gadgets Invented By GI’s Speed Plane Work
Civilian aircraft factories are delivering planes to Army Air Forces training fields in increasing quantities — but part of the credit for quickened production lines goes to enlisted men mechanics who service those ships on the flying lines.
Douglas has just adopted a "Web Jig," increasing the speed and thoroughness of the paint job on a plane's webs, invented by Cpl. A. V. Holben of Mather Field, Sacramento, advanced flying school of the Army Air Forces West Coast Training Center. The company gave the corporal, a former employee at its Long Beach plant, a "C" award, an executive letter of recognition and several war bonds. Corporal Holben not only paints planes on the line—he also paints action murals for the walls of his squadron day room.
Vultee has incorporated two inventions of Harry T. McCormick, machine shop superintendent of the Minter Field (California) Sub-Depot. One is a "puller" by which one unskilled worker can remove landing gear struts in 15 minutes — an operation which formerly took a hydraulic jack, a block of wood, a sledge hammer, four men and five hours.
The other is a new jig which reduces the time required to drill flap controls from seven hours to two hours fifteen minutes, and 23 other jigs developed by McCormick, a former Bakersfield automobile service man, are speeding repair of planes on army flight lines.
Pilots Power Dive P-47 to New Record
Two Army pilots set a new speed record for airplanes in a power dive, 725 miles per hour, when they plunged their P-47 fighter panes earthward from an altitude of 35,000 feet over an East Coast air base on Nov. 15, Republic Aviation Corporation has just reported.
The planes traveled at a speed only 11 miles an hour short of the great they could not move the is 736 miles an hour. At the height in which they operated they traveled faster than sound because its speed diminishes as air gets thinner.
The pilots, Lt. Harold Comstock, 22, of Fresno, Calif., and Lt. Roger Dyar, 22, of Lowell, Ohio, reported that when they decided to pull out of their dives the pressure of the air on the tail surfaces was so great they could not move the sticks. To flatten out they resorted to the crank controlling the elevator trim tabs.
Both pilots were in full control of their mental faculties during the plunges. Lt. Comstock said he came out of his with the impression that the plane had been "hit by a truck."

Gunner's Job Gives With The Action
TYNDALL FIELD, FLA. — Do you want to get into action?
Do you want the opportunity to do the Axis a lot of damage? You can do this by volunteering for training as an aerial gunner in the Army Air Forces. All that a soldier has to do to obtain the opportunity is to talk to his Commanding Officer.
Qualified volunteers from the age of 18 to 30, inclusive, are being sought to attend the five-week training course conducted at Tyndall Field, the Nation's largest aerial gunny school.
Upon completion of the course, if you've got the stuff it takes you'll receive a pair of silver combat crew wings and a sergeant's chevrons. (If you are a specialist you will receive a staff sergeant rating.) And you'll receive flying pay—50 per cent additional to your base pay—because you'll be one of the crew of an Air Force bomber.

Sergeant Bart Beach and his attractive bride, formerly Miss Ardette Aase of Minnesota, have returned to Santa Barbara after a short visit here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R, J. Beach of West Broadway. Sgt. Beach, a Union high school graduate who attended the University at Berkeley, is stationed at Santa Barbara with the Signal Corps.
The young couple were married in August, and Mrs. Beach was an Army nurse stationed at Camp Haan.
Union completion of the course, if you've got the stuff it takes, you'll receive a pair of silver combat crew wings and a sergeant's chevrons. Men in any branch of the Army may apply to their Commanding Officers for a transfer to the gunnery school. Men in civilian life who enlist or are drafted may apply for gunnery school at the time of induction or at any time later.
Because the demand for skilled gunners is great, there doubtless will be little waiting after you apply before you are on the way to Tyndall Field.
At Tyndall Field, the AAF has set up an elaborate training school at which student gunners learn how to recognize enemy and friendly planes, how to fire machine guns ranging in size from those which fire BB's to high-powered .50 calibre weapons. From a speeding plane, you will fire bullets at a sleeve target toward another ship.
To qualify for the school you must:
1. Be between the ages of 18 and 30, inclusive.
2. Be not more than five feet, 10

The Boys Sure Play Rough
During the raid on Dutch Harbor last June, Jap fighters stumbled onto an advanced Army airfield out in the Aleutians. Our land based aircraft, upon patrol at the time, immediately tore into the enemy.
Meanwhile a big C-47 transport landed at the base with a load of cargo, the pilot not realizing what kind of a show was going on up above. As he cut the motors, the pilot turned to the co-pilot and pointed to the small winged objects hurtling across the sky.
"The boys sure do play hard, don't they?" he commented.
"Yeh," the co-pilot grinned, "if they don't look out somebody's going to get hurt practicing that way."
A moment later they froze in their seats. One of the "boys" had started down, quite obviously hurt. Their jaws dropped in unison when it got low enough for them to make out the rising sun insignia on the fuselage, and the familiar white star on the ship hot in pursuit.
"Well I'll be damned!" was all either of the C-47 men could find to say.
Don't Say We Didn't Warn You!
The War Department has announced 33 G.I. jobs for which our fair friends the WAACs are being trained. They may become bakers, clerks, postal clerks, cooks, radio repairwomen, mimeograph operators, stenographers, teletype operators, typists, cashiers, telephone operators, stock record clerks, chauffeurs, bookkeepers, sales clerks, librarians, message center clerks, motor vehicle dispatchers, messengers, weather observers, camera technicians, photo laboratory workers, telegraph printer operators, cadre clerks, draftsmen, radio operators, machine record operators, statisticians, musicians, truck drivers, classification specialists, accountants or bookkeeping machine operators.
United Nations Will Out-Produce Axis 3-1
"One year from now United Nations production will be nearly three to one ahead of Axis production," WPB Chief Donald Nelson told 4,000 members of the National Association of Manufacturers in convention this week.
"The U.S. alone today turns out as many guns, tanks, airplanes, shells and ships as the entire Axis, and with the production of the other Allies added, we have the Axis beaten two to one." Nelson added.
Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox informed the same meeting that "the Japanese in all theaters have lost in killed or permanently injured 250,000 men. Our Army and Navy have lost in all operations approximately 50,000 killed and missing."
Football Helps On Bombing Mission
Football is good training for combat flying, says Lieutenant Glen Osbourne, former Canisius College star tackle, because "you learn how to take the good with the bad breaks."
"We were flying in formation when an engine went bad and we were forced to drop back, but we kept going, reached our objective and dropped our bombs. You learn to take the good with the bad breaks."
The young lieutenant, who played on the Canisius varsity in 1938-39-40, returned wearing the Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross. His home is in Perry, New York.

Wing span is 47 feet, length 39 feet and height, 15 feet.
Note that the Brewster and Gruman favor each other in design as far as the mid-wings and retractable wheels are concerned. This ship will probably play an important role in both our army and navy units.
New P-47 Plane Can Outfight Them All
The P-47, which is now in production, according to Asst. Secretary of War, J. J. McCloy, will outperform and outfight any other known fighter at any altitude.
"Spitfires were used to protect our bombers on their flights over France only because we made a deal with England whereby we would get our bombers into action much faster by using their excellent fighters as support pending arrival of our own," McCloy said.

It was the day after the great raid at Dieppe and everyone was talking about the British Commandos and the American Rangers. Only the short, sandy-haired Canadian lieutenant colonel in the club car was silent. He said, very simply, "You know, gentlemen, this may startle you—but there are no commandos any more."
The colonel introduced himself. "The name's Guildford F. Dudley. A Jerry bomb knocked me out a few weeks ago. That's why I'm here, instead of on the other side, commanding my battalion.
