Polhemus Brothers
Forging Ahead
In Naval Reserves
Those three stars on the little pin that Mrs. Henry D. Polhemus wears with such pride, represent the two sons of the Polhemus home on South Placentia avenue, Dean and Don Polhemus, and the son-in-law, Lieut. C. B. Cotton of the Naval Training station at Sampson, N.Y.
Dean Polhemus, older son of Mr. and Mrs. Polhemus, enlisted in the Naval Reserves over a year ago at Great Lakes Naval Training station where he had his preliminary training for the post he now holds as storekeeper second class, at State Teachers' college, Cedar Falls, Iowa. He was just recently transferred to the WAVES' base from similar duties at University of Wisconsin, at Madison.
Don Polhemus has followed his brother's example, having enlisted in the Naval Reserves last September at San Diego where he had his preliminary training. He is now attending Storekeepers' School at Toledo, Ohio, from which he expects to graduate in March.
The daughter of the home, Mrs. C. B. Cotton (Evelyn Polhemus) recently completed a two months' visit here and returned to her home in Geneva, N.Y., near her husband's base.
Give Him
The Greater Gift ++
● A drum, a little red wagon, a picture book... these are gifts that bring joy to a boy's heart. But you can give him a far greater gift. You can give him the right to live as a free American... the advantages of liberal schooling... the freedom to follow his religious beliefs... the privilege of choosing his life-work... yes, even the unquestioned right to gain a world of knowledge and pleasure through travel.
All this you can give him by doing whatever you can—no matter how little—to win this war so that he may live to appreciate fully the true meaning of Christmas... peace on earth and good-will toward men.
Today, in the Union Pacific family, thousands of fathers are working tirelessly to justify the steadfast faith of their children. Theirs is the task of assuring the safe transportation of trainloads of war materials and troops. It is a tremendous job but they are doing it gladly. They know, as do we all, that only through hard work and sacrifice can we give our little ones the greatest gift of all... peace and freedom.

Mary Eddy, author of "Science Health with Key to the Saints," reminds her readers, "When the Science of Christianity appears, it will lead you into truth." The Sermon on the Miracle is the essence of this Science, the eternal life, not the death Jesus, is its outcome."
No Snow Sports At Southland’s Winter Resorts
Anyone in Anaheim, or any place else in the Southland, who may have been “Dreaming of a white Christmas,” will have to be satisfied with the dream alone, and spend their holidays right at home. For the state division of highways has closed the recreational roads in mountain areas, and will no longer keep them cleared of snow except for essential travel.
Sun Valley, that favorite resort of ski enthusiasts, closed officially last Sunday, and those who had their holiday reservations made in advance, received notification that the Union Pacific Railroad, which owns and operates the year-round sports resort, had closed it for the duration. Shortage of man power, food and gas together with demands upon railroad facilities were given as reasons.
U. S. Highway 50, crossing Echo Summit to Lake Tahoe; the General Grant Kings Canyon National highway; the Wawona entrance to Yosemite National park, and highways into Lassen Volcanic National park are some of the highways included in instructions issued to district highway engineers.
California Highway division explains the move as necessary in order to conserve snow removal equipment for those areas where the war situation requires that roads be kept open. The division also is experiencing a manpower shortage.
Nearly a third of the planes now facing the Axis in the Near East are of American make.

Thank you for your help
Day we have some more at Christmas?
The greatest war of all time is causing, on the Long Distance lines of the Nation, the greatest number of telephone calls in history.
Those calls are helping to build ships, to make munitions, to move troops and supplies. They are helping to bring the end of the war closer.
Big though it is, the national network of Long Distance lines has no margins this year for purely personal calls. With copper and many other materials vitally needed for war production, more lines cannot be built at this time.
May we therefore ask you . . . even during the holidays . . . to make only those calls to the war-busy centers which are necessary?
We appreciate your friendly understanding. Your continued co-operation is of real help to us.

These are strange and strenuous times. On Main Street in Santa Ana yesterday we saw a child screaming with fright and hiding behind its mother's skirts. The reason was that a man was approaching, dressed like Santa Claus.
