New Program Has Been Formulated For State Guard
A complete new program for inactive companies of 6th Regiment, California State Guard was announced today by Regimental Commander Clifton S. Smith, after a series of conferences with Colonel Hastie, commanding officer of the California Military Forces and members of the adjutant general's staff.
“This program,” said Colonel Smith, in making the announcement, “will result in each local company being recruited to strength; receiving the necessary equipment from the state and being trained not only in standard military procedure but in such specialized training as will be required to best fulfill the need of the local community in which the company is stationed.”
“It has always been the opinion of many of the officers of the California State Guard,” continued Colonel Smith, “that the real purpose of the Guard could best be served by the trained patriotic men of a community, functioning in their own locality. This was definitely proven in the early days of the Guard, and I am very happy to announce that this will be the future plan of the 6th Regiment in this area.”
“I have detailed a group of officers and non-commissioned officers commanded by my Regimental Executive Officer, Major J. Frank Wharton, to this most important training program. They are at the present making a survey to ascertain the needs and methods which will best suit each local community.”
Hostess Trio Plans Luncheon for Assistance League
Christmas philanthropies were planned by members of Anaheim Assistance League at their latest meeting in the J. P. Wilson home on West Broadway.
Mrs. J. Ben Kaulbars and Mrs. Jefferson Rust joined with Mrs. Wilson in entertaining the group, and in serving a tempting luncheon to the accompaniment of colorful holiday appointments. This decorative motif was applied in pleasant fashion throughout the home, with a sparkling Christmas tree as the center of interest.
Mrs. H. E. W. Barnes presided over the after-luncheon business interval during which plans were perfected for bringing holiday cheer to others. The January meeting will be with Mrs. Barnes in her home, 623 North Zeyn street.
MRS. EMMA A. CRAIG, a resident of Anaheim for the past 17 years, was called by death yesterday morning at her home, 310 North Philadelphia street. Arrangements have been completed for funeral rites tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock in the Hilgenfeld chapel.
The Rev. Don Earl Boatman, pastor of First Church of Christ, will officiate, and burial will follow in Loma Vista cemetery.
Born 68 years ago in Texas, Mrs. Craig came to California more than a score of years ago. She was a member of the Christian church in her former community in Texas. NEW GUINEA—At a tremendous cost the Japs have succeeded in landing reinforcement on the northern coast of New Guinea, but these new troops reached the shore in such condition that it is doubtful whether they will be of material benefit to the enemy groups that MacArthur’s men had backed to the sea. Ask Elimination Of Fuel-Wasting Traffic Signals
To enable Southland motorists to "attain as closely as possible the 15 miles per gallon allotted them under the nation-wide gasoline rationing plan," letters urging a re-study of local traffic problems to the end that fuel-wasting traffic control devices may be eliminated were directed today to members of Anaheim city council.

An additional feature is the Christmas hospitality program. Service men are invited by local residents to share Christmas dinner with them. Make your reservations at the Fourth and Main USO for a home-cooked Christmas dinner — in a real home.

Of Fuel-Wasting Traffic Signals
To enable Southland motorists to "attain as closely as possible the 15 miles per gallon allotted them under the nation-wide gasoline rationing plan," letters urging a re-study of local traffic problems to the end that fuel-wasting traffic control devices may be eliminated were directed today to members of Anaheim city council and Orange county board of supervisors.
The appeal for the study here was made by Standish L. Mitchell, general manager of the Automobile club of Southern California. Similar requests have been directed to city councils and boards of supervisors throughout the Southland.
"On behalf of Southern California motorists, allow me to suggest that your proper officials restudy your particular traffic problems in the light of changed conditions, to the end that only such traffic control devices will be retained as are necessary for reasonable public safety, and others may be eliminated to expedite traffic movement," Mitchell stated. He called attention to the fact that traffic signals, boulevard stops and other such controls are known to slash obtainable gasoline mileage.
Accurate tests recently completed by Automobile Club engineers revealed that a 34 per cent loss of mileage efficiency occurs when five boulevard stops are made in one mile. The tests showed that further "uncoordinated" stop-and-go signals in operation on Los Angeles' Sixth street cut the mileage efficiency approximately 24 per cent compared with the return attained on Wilshire boulevard with its "coordinated" controls.
FRUIT CAKE NEWS
In view of Christmas dinner plans being made by scores of Anaheim housewives, they welcomed the announcement from the regional Office of Price Administration that fruit cake, time-hallowed symbol of holiday menus, will remain at its present ceiling price.

ENSTITUTES SMITH POSSIBLE IN Naval Reserves
Those rulings prohibiting voluntary enlistment in the nation's armed forces, have not yet affected all branches of the service, according to statements reaching the Gazette this week.
From the Public Relations office in San Diego of the Eleventh Naval district comes announcement that applications for commissions in the U.S. Naval Reserve will still be received at the Office of Naval Officer Procurement, Room 504, Bank of America building, San Diego.
Men may still be enlisted in Classes V-1 and V-7, which are officer training programs for university men, and in V-5, for aviation cadet training, providing they are otherwise qualified. General qualifications for a commission in Naval Reserve include a college background, American citizenship, character and business recommendations, and ability to pass the physical examination.
Commissions are still available in other classes for qualified men with experience in civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, radio and communications, and in art instruction.
In the Seabees (the Navy's construction battalions) applications for enlistment will no longer be accepted except for commissions and warrant officer appointments. However, with the officers' quota raised, opportunities for such commissions and appointments in this branch of the service are good. College degree requirements are waived for men with sufficient construction experience, according to procurement authorities. Each Seabee battalion contains 1100 men, 17 commissioned and 10 warrant officers.
