Santa Ana Air Base Training Program Aerial War Is Multi-Motored (The following are excerpts from an article called "Backfield of the Western Skies," concerning the work of SAAAB, which appeared in the October issue of "Dixie Air News.") Near Santa Ana is the foundation stone for the entire WCAAFTC school system—the sprawling Santa Ana Army Air Base where every single Aviation Cadet trained in the West spends from nine to twelve weeks in pre-flight training. In this huge camp which didn't even exist only a few months ago the Training Center "processes" its raw recruits: gives them clothing, medical tests, innoculation, physical conditioning, basic military drill, and a variety of intensive "skull practice" classroom courses in army organization and etiquette, physics, mathematics, photography, meteorology, psychology, naval and aerial recognition. Here, too, the searching Psychology Section applies a variety of tests to the future athletes of the air, gts them into their proper niches in the aircrew according to physical and mental qualifications. After three weeks at the Base, Cadets are separated into navigator, bombardier and pilot groups, members of which live together, develop a fierce pride in the glories of their profession. NAVIGATORS' LIFE Navigators leave the Base after three months and go to Mather Field, just outside California's capital city of Sacramento, for a concentrated fifteen weeks of study which will fit them to direct the flight of a Flying Fortress anywhere in the world under any conditions. Handling these flying bundles horsepower is a real art, entirely distinct from flying single-engined aircraft. PILOT CAREER The career of pilots who work at the Santa Ana ground curricula is slightly more complicated than that of navigators and bombers. Pilots progress successfully through Primary, Basic, Advanced training schools, logous to grammar school, school and college in case form. The "grammar school" course a ten-week affair during which the aspirant is really first in his equipment...a little or Stearman primary training 165 to 225 horsepower, in which he completes 65 hours of dual solo flying. Primary schools all private contract institutes staffed by civilian instructors directed by a small group of Forces officers who handle military end of the Aviation detachment. The basic or "high school stretch is another ten-week where the Cadet really begins fly in military fashion. He becomes acquainted with basic training planes — faster, more powerful than primary ship. PICK UPS AND THROWS -- -- BITTER MEMORIES An old friend dropped in days ago. The Pacific Goldfish farm is valued at $22,234 and yields a net income of $6500 annually, according to statements made the past week when Robert Bender Lowry of Midway City became its manager and guardian of its owner, by superior court appointment. Lowry first petitioned for guardianship of Joe S. Akiyama, 18, American-born son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Akiyama, in February of this year. At that time the latter agreed to sell the goldfish farm to their son, who is said also to own $12,000 worth of Buena Park property and a $5000 investment in a Santa Ana building and loan association. Under the agreement drawn up at that time, Henry Akiyama, father, was to be paid $250 a dianship, Lowry stated that he work, and Mrs. Masuko Akiyama, mother, was to be paid $150 a month for her work. Judge Kenneth E. Morrison agreed to the petition by naming Lowry to the double post, but required a $25,000 surety bond from him to protect young Akiyama's interest during his absence. Combat Duty Now Reward For Merit Selection of men for combat duty from this post was clarified in word from headquarters received here this week. The directive reads: From time to time this Command is called upon to furnish personnel for combat units by numbers rather than by names. The requisitioning of personnel from this Command by numbers rather than by names is considered desirable since this procedure leaves the selection of the person will serve as a clearing house for co-ordinating the efforts of member companies. Information and technical data developed by the Council will be made available to all airframe manufacturers engaged in war production. However, it has come to the attention of this Headquarters that in many cases the officers and enlisted men who have earned a chance to go to a combat unit by hard work, diligence and loyalty, are not recommended for combat duty, rather the misfits and inefficient personnel are recommended for these desirable details. In some cases the opposite situation exists; however, these are in the minority. In order to correct this general situation, which has a decided demoralizing effect on the hard working and loyal officers of this Command, it is directed that the assignments of officers and enlisted men to combat organizations be placed on a merit basis. This policy will be publicized so that those officers and enlisted men who desire assignment to combat units may be selected for such assignment as a reward for their efficiency. HITLER SERENADE New York City's movie organs have played their last tunes—except for Hitler. They were turned in for the scrap drive, a single one of them yielding 2300 pounds of vital war metals. America is sliding aircraft carriers down the ways many times faster than our enemies can sink them. The new carriers are both big and small, but all fast and well equipped with sturdy, hard-bitting airplanes.
