Two Air Force Men Earn Citations For Valor; One Was Cadet at SAAAB
Two men were awarded citations by the War Department at Mather Field, Army Air Forces Advanced Flying School, Sacramento, on the same day.
T/Sgt. James C. Bowers was awarded the Soldier's Medal for Heroism for his brave efforts and quick action in extinguishing a fire in a Mather Field warehouse, containing ammunition and pyrotechnics.
Lancaster Carries Powerful Punch
Known as the "Lank" this big, powerful airplane, short-winged for its load-carrying capacity, was built for a specific reason—to haul a big bomb load over the channel for a few hundred miles under cover of darkness. Well turreted, it is virtually devoid of blind spots, but all the armament is limited to rifle-calibre guns. This ship was not designed for the task of slugging it out without benefit of fighter escort.
The Lancaster has an optimum cruising speed of 300 miles per hour, a ferrying range of 3000 miles. It is armed with four Frazier-Nash turrets. Normally the ship carries a crew of six, the captain, co-pilot, navigator-bombardier, two radio gunners and a full time gunner for the tail.
The big ship's phenomenal load carrying capacity is derived from the fact that every structural trick in the book has been put to work in order to achieve lightness without undue loss of strength. The airframe is built of flush-riveted aluminum alloy. The bomb-bay roof is a new feature which acts as a floor for the cabin, and overhead support for the world's largest and longest bomb-rack.

U. S. Fliers Stung Japs Back in 1931
A prize of $25,000 was offered by a Japanese newspaper for the pilot who could make the first non-stop flight from Tokyo to America's west coast. This was back in 1931, and the prize was offered to stimulate interest in Japanese aviation.
Three Jap pilots made the attempt, all with results ranging from ridiculous to disastrous. An American flying team, Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon, heard about the prize while they were on the last leg of a round-the-world hop. They dropped by Tokyo and took off from there to win the money.
Red Cross Reports
Big Father Crop
The crop of new fathers at this post is amazing. Beautiful to see is the squaring of shoulders and the throwing out of chests, when the men are notified by Red Cross that they now have offspring.
The variety of requests from Red Cross are multitudinous. Latest is for a bugle. Now, who brought that up!
Forty-nine men from Sqdn. 3 made a donation to the Red Cross, the money to be restricted for use on this field. The men can be sure that their contribution will be put to many worthwhile uses.
Records released by the Field Director indicate that since the opening of Red Cross facilities on this post, over 2000 servicemen have availed themselves of these services.
Any change in dependency status of the family of an Army enlisted man receiving family allowance should be reported to the Allowance and Allotment Branch, War Department, on WDAGO From 641, which may be secured from the Army or from Red Cross. This form is used to report any change (such as birth of a child, death, marriage, remarriage or divorce of a dependent) occurring after the initial claim for allowance has been filed. Documentary evidence of such change, by submission of birth or death certificate, certified copies of official records of marriages, divorce, etc., is required to support Form 641.

Here Is Opportunity for Everyone to Serve His Country for Victory and a Better Future
FOR better health, better morale, and greater strength, America asks you to "Eat the Right Foods." Only a strong people in the best state of nutrition will be able to win the peace and rebuild this war-torn world.
So that our own fighting men and those of our Allies may have enough, and so that every American civilian, war-worker or otherwise, may have the better nutrition needed, our government asks everyone to "Share the Meat" and to limit themselves voluntarily to 2½ pounds of meat per week per adolescent or adult person. Children should have proportionate quantities, according to their age.
Nutritionists are agreed that meat should be eaten at least once each day. It is man's outstanding protein food because its proteins are "biologically adequate". Contain all the ten essential amino acids needed for tissue growth. It supplies valuable amounts of the vitamins thiamine, riboflavin and niacin, as well as necessary minerals—iron, copper, and phosphorus.
Some of our people heretofore have eaten more than 2½ pounds weekly. Some have eaten less.
Your government requests everyone who has been accustomed to larger amounts of meat to limit themselves to 2½ pounds of beef, pork, veal, lamb and mutton per week. But consumers may make up for the additional proteins they have had heretofore by eating more of the variety meats such as liver, sweetbreads, tongue, kidneys, brains, hearts, sausage products not made of carcass meats (such as liver sausage, souse scrapple, etc., etc.)...and poultry and fish, and other items which are not on the government's "voluntary ration" list.
People who have been eating less than 2½ pounds of meat per week should make sure that they get an adequate supply of the essential nutrients of which meat is such an excellent source. The government's program does not call for "meatless days" which would defeat the purpose of the Share-the-Meat campaign. Our country is served better by consumers aiming toward better nutrition than by limiting themselves to the amount of meat they eat daily to a point which is not called for on the basis of available civilian supplies.
Remember, too, that the meat products not on the government's "voluntary ration" list are excellent sources of the nutrients natural to all meat.
