Forbes Exonerated Stockings Make By Grand Jury Ideal Gifts In Fatal Shooting All Women Like
"Finis" has been written to the tragic story of the death of Howard Patterson on Monday, November 30, as result of a gunshot wound allegedly administered by his brother-in-law, Earl E. Forbes, at the latter's home on South Philadelphia street.
The Orange county grand jury, after hearing various witnesses in the case, pronounced the verdict of justifiable homicide, exonerating Forbes. The latter had been under police custody at the County General hospital since the tragedy, but was released and returned to his home.
Evidence given before the grand jury of which Donald Smiley is foreman, showed that Patterson had appeared at the Forbes home twice before the third and final visit when the slaying occurred. He had been threatening and abusive in his attitude it was claimed. It was on his third visit that Forbes assertedly fired the shotgun that administered the lethal wound. Police examination at the time, disclosed the fact that Patterson was unarmed but that he carried a loaded shotgun in his nearby automobile.
Say Merry Christmas with stockings — because this year they're the most wanted of all gifts. A very practical gift too now that we're all "on our toes" more, and we all really need a stocking wardrobe.
If you haven't seen, or worn the new rayon hose, you're in for a real treat. They're a wonderful tribute to American ingenuity and adaptability. You'll be surprised at their clinging beauty, their misty sheerness — their long wearing qualities, with the proper care. These new "wonder" hose come in a wide variety of weights and different weaves for every daytime and evening occasion.
Another grant type of hose, and one that will appeal to the most fastidious of women—are the cotton lisles. These are available in a wide selection of plain weaves, sport and dress meshes, as well as beautiful jacquard type lace weaves.
For the active woman, and girl-on-the-go — choose one of the wearable service weights that are leg-flattering and at the same time have all the sturdy qualities that are desired for day-in and day-out wear.
But, no matter what type of hose you decide on for gift-giving, remember to see that specific washing instructions go with every pair.

American fighting men may soon have to die for want of scrap!
WE'REtalking facts, remember! Such as the fact that steel for every tank, ship, and gun must be made of 50% scrap. And the terrible fact that America's mills are starving for this scrap—without enough on hand for even 30 days more production!
Which puts it up to you!
Monday starts the big scrap metal drive. And you, as a businessman, have a double job to do. Clean out your home—and scour your place of business, factory, office or store...for every single bit of scrap.

HOLIDAY CANDIES
This sugar rationing era made Christmas candies rise to be almost non-existent. The problem can be solved by quickly making Victory Marshows, which are as easy to eat they are to make. They are obvious "as is," or sprinkled with red cocoanut or melted chocolate, and are yum-yum in hot molate—if you have the cocoa. You make them, soak 1 tablespoon of gelatin in a quarter cup of cold water. Dissolve this over water and add one cup of pre-breakfast apples.
BREAKFAST APPLES
For a cheerful addition to breakfast, serve cocoanut apples colored with red cinnamon drops. For six apples, use a half pound of cinnamon drops, one pint of water and one cup of shredded cocoanut. Dissolve the candies in the boiling water in a shallow sauce pan. Add the pared and cored apples and cook over a low flame until tender. Turn the apples after they have cooked ten minutes, so the syrup will penetrate the whole fruit. When tender, and the most of the syrup is Anaheim Man Reads Of Small Nephew
Of more than usual interest to Herman Reynolds, a member of the Silzle Corporation staff here, was a recent copy of his home town paper, the Shamrock Texan, published in the little Texas city of Shamrock.
For in a special column called "To Boys in Service," he found the story of his tiny nephew, James ("Sonny") Reynolds, who delivered to the city's salvage collection, ten pounds of salvage, almost more than he could carry, announcing that it was "Scrap to whip the Jap."
"Sonny's father, Kenneth Reynolds, a brother of the Anaheim man, is slowly recovering from war injuries in the San Diego Naval hospital, so the little boy's interest in "whipping the Jap" is doubly keen.
Steinbeck Forsakes Wrathful Grapes For "Bombs Away"
One of the most thoughtful and provocative books arising out of the present war is "Bombs Away," written for the U.S. Army Air Forces by John Steinbeck.
In vivid dramatic style Steinbeck takes six youngsters from varied walks of life and traces their careers through the Air Forces training schools and into combat. They are a bombardier, a pilot, a navigator, a gunner, a chief mechanic and a radio operator.
“This cross section,” says Steinbeck, “these men from all over the country, had become one thing — a bomber crew. they were changed, but they had not lost what they were, they were still individuals. Perhaps that is what makes our crews superior. The greatest way, with headquarters Angeles, has been Anna Charles H.Woods of Chico company’s general solicitor Gibson, a native Virginian alumnus of George Washington University Law school, in examiner for the Commerce Commission. served as a general attendant the Santa Fe since 1934, a leading part in the successful effort to obstructed bus-rail service state.

Beekeepers Urged To Turn in Wax
Orange county beekeepers have been urged by the county's Agricultural service to produce and turn in as much wax as possible to help make up the nation's two million pound shortage of beeswax needed in war work. Farm Advisor Harold Wahlberg stated that the crop was 13 per cent short this year, resulting in less than the normal amount of the badly needed wax.
OTTO F. GENRICH, whose home was at 891 South Walnut street, was called by death yesterday morning at Lutheran hospital. Born in Germany 78 years ago, he had lived in Anaheim for the past two years. He leaves no family, for his wife, Mrs. Lydia Genrich, preceded him in death by only a few months, her death having occurred in Septmeber.
Funeral services were announced today by Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars to take place tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock in Zion Lutheran church, with the Rev. L. E. Eifert conducting the rites. Burial will be made in the family plot in Anaheim cemetery.
WARNING DEVICE
An electrical manufacturing company has devised an instrument which, if installed in a ship's stacks, warns firemen when clouds of smoke are being sent into the sky for submarines to see.
THE POCKETBOOK OF KNOWLEDGE BY TOPPS
For careers through the Air Forces training schools and into combat. They are a bombardier, a pilot, a navigator, a gunner, a chief mechanic and a radio operator.
"This cross section," says Steinbeck, "these men from all over the country, had become one thing — a bomber crew. they were changed, but they had not lost what they were, they were still individuals. Perhaps that is what makes our crews superior. The greatest teams in the world."
John Steinbeck, author of "Grapes of Wrath," "Of Mice and Men," "The Moon is Down," and other books which rank him as one of our foremost writers, is ideal for this type of story. A new form of dialogue fills the mouthpieces and earphones of our communication systems. This is Steinbeck's meat. As one reads this book, a new understanding and appreciation of our present and future life in the Air Forces is born. The detail and reason for our Santa Ana life becomes clearer. A splendid series of sixty action photographs by John Swope accompany the text.
All royalties and publishers' profits on this book go to the Air Forces Aid Society Trust Fund. The motion picture rights which have already been sold for $250,000, go to the same fund.

New Railroad Links Base To Santa Ana
A new rail line to connect Santa Ana Army Air Base with the city of Santa Ana is under construction here. The line is designed to handle carload freight shipments. Possibility that it could eventually be used for passenger traffic between the base and the city was foreseen unofficially, although no steps have been taken to secure franchise rights for that purpose.
The line is slated to be completed around the first of the year. The track laying work involves an outlay of about $125,000. Two miles of new trackage are being laid, and the new unit will be an extension of the Greenville spur off the Santa Ana main line. The tracks enter the air base so as to connect with main warehouses. When completed the project will greatly facilitate supply shipments here.
Contractors reported that some of the old rail steel being used in the project came from the famed gold fields of Tonopah, Nevada, salvaged from the rail line that hauled millions of dollars out of that district in its bonanza days.
LEND-LEASE NEEDS
Military and Lend-Lease needs for food in 1943 will be half again as great as in 1942, and will absorb one-fifth of this nation's total food production, according to Secretary of Agriculture Wickard.

have on square footage of buildings and their locations, I will have an unanswerable argument for the plant's locating here," today declared Johnston.
He pointed out the far reaching effects such an industry would have. One of these is the possibility of bringing one of the federal nursery projects to this city, to care for children of women workers. If there were 50 children needing such care, the nursery would be an assured project, according to his information.
In outlining his plans, Johnston emphasized that applicants must not be present workers in Douglas or similar war industries, but he is convinced that there are hundreds of Anaheim women who would be available for work if the industry were located here in their own city, where long working days and transportation problems would not assail them.
