He Lost The War ... Twenty-five years ago this week, a tensely expectant Congress heard America's 28th President call for a declaration of war. On that day of April 6, 1917, there was a widespread conviction that the war had only to be won in order to bring true that dream of a happy post-war world which Woodrow Wilson elegantly outlined in his war message. Such was not the case. Today, a quarter of a century later, the US finds itself engaged in a second world war whose magnitude far surpasses all past wars. Something went wrong with the dreams and plans of the past. What was it? Yes, something went wrong with the dreams for we wanted to mind our own business then. We wanted to mind our own business this time. But the ounce of prevention that might have set the sabre-rattlers reeling back into oblivion a decade ago was never used. In a world which has shown itself to be a pretty small neighborhood, the proper precautions were not taken. There was no accord. But there will be another Armistice day, by the grace of God, and following much sacrifice. There will be another day of reckoning after which it will be the duty of every free man to prevent it being said of someone in the future: "He lost the war—but won the Armistice."
