Snore Victory Away? Biggest news of the week, yes, brightest news of the entire war, insofar as the United nations are concerned, was he widely hearalded transfer of the man of the hour, General Douglas MacArthur, from the beleagured Phillipines to complete command in the Pacific theatre of war, and justly so. Its the brightest bit of information transmitted since the Armistice, and all the words of praise heaped upon this US “soldier’s soldier” wouldn’t be sufficient commendation. But, it seems, there is one or two details lacking in the glowing accounts coming out of this transfer and its effect on our position in the conflict. One of them is, with what will he make his stand down in Australia? How much has he at his command there? Douglas MacArthur, even George Washington, General U. S. Grant, or General John J. Pershing, all or each of them, couldn’t fight this war without guns, men, ships, and airplanes. And, how, following the successful defense of the “Land Down Under” will he continue an offensive war necessary to end this entire mess? The answer lies squarely with Americans at home, and not alone with Douglas MacArthur and his fighting legions. The hope of the United Nations, despite the miracle accomplished by this change, rests not in Australia, in Britain, in Africa, or India, but in America. It rests in your home and mine, and the American who, upon hearing of Douglas MacArthur’s tranfer, sits back in his easy chair and considers the war won, sleeps in the face of danger, slumbers through a period of uncertainty, and if enough Americans are so inclined, will snore victory out of the grasp of the man who can live in history as the greatest general the world has ever known. PROTECTION FOR FLAMES, DROUGHT Valued at many times the construction cost of the Colorado river aqueduct, positive fire and drought protection is available today to Anaheim and 12 other cities of the Metropolitan Water district, according to an assertion by District Board Chairman W. P. Whitsett in a review of the system's operations and services. "With Southern California now forging ahead on the crucial battlefront of war production and with many of these great industries located in cities of the Metropolitan Water district," said Chairman Whitsett, "there has come about a fuller realization in military and civilian circles of the tremendous factor of safety provided by the vast and close-hand water supply made available by the Colorado river aqueduct. No other industrial area in the country is better prepared with water reserves from multiple sources." BY SAME TOKEN "By the same token, the $190,-000,000 invested by the people of the thirteen district cities in the aqueduct already is returning large dividends in the protection and security thus brought to vital industries and an ever growing population." The thirteen cities comprising the Metropolitan Water district, Chairman Whitsett pointed out, are Anaheim, Beverly Hills, Burbank, Compton, Fullerton, Glendale, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Pasadena, San Marino, Santa Ana, Santa Monica and Torrance.
