In "The Moon Is Down," John Steinbeck has written just the story that is needed in this crucial hour, a story to bolster the faith of free men everywhere and renew their confidence in ultimate victory. No wonder the Book-of-the-Month Club selected this beautiful novel. "The Moon Is Down" is a "natural." Steinbeck's message can be stated simply in the calm, courageous words of the mayor of the little town that has been conquered by the Nazis. "People don't like to be conquered, so they will not be," says Mayor Orden to the enemy Colonel. "Free men cannot start a war. But once it is started they can fight on in defeat. Herd men, followers of a leader, cannot do that, and so it is always the herd men who win battles and the free men who win wars." "The Moon Is Down" is the story of a village—apparently a village in Norway; although the author never says so—and what happens after the Nazis had gone away. "The Moon Is Down" is the story of a village—apparently a village in Norway; although the author never says so—and what happened there after the Nazis had "occupied" it. The first day the Nazi colonel tells the mayor that the people must work in the mines so that coal can be shipped to Germany. They will carry out instructions because they are an orderly people, the Colonel says. "I don't know, sir," the mayor replies. "They are orderly under their own government. I don't know how they would be under yours." "You must make them do the work and thus keep them safe," said the Colonel. DON'T WANT TO And the mayor reflected on this and said, "But suppose they don't want to be safe?" "The Moon Is Down" is so perfect in itself and so dramatic that it is impossible to tell the story in fewer words than the author has used. The best way to review such a book is simply to say: "Don't fail to read it." Then you will be sure to have an experience you won't soon forget. AUSTRIAN REFUGEE Leo Lania, Austrian refugee author whose autobiography, "Today We Are Brothers," will be published shortly, was introduced to Wendell Willkie at the opening of the new refugee culture center, Freedom house, in New York. "Do you think the German citizens believe German propaganda?" Mr. Willkie asked him. Instead of answering directly, Mr. Lania told him a story about a tailor who lived in the small Polish town of Cattowitz. This tailor had several competitors in the town and as a result, his business wasn't doing very well. He finally hit upon a fine scheme. One by one he approached his competitors and said: "I understand that there is a great need for tailors in Vilna. When they were all gone, his wife came home one day to find him packing. "Where are you going?" she asked. "I am going to Vilna," the little tailor replied. They get here before the robbins do, bearing diverse tales of their adventures and misadventures on the platform throughout the country. Louis Fischer, author of "Men in Politics" and "Dawn of Victory," reports that of all the questions asked by his various audiences, the most surprising was one from a little lady in a western city. "One thing I don't understand, Mr. Fischer," she said. "Several times during your lecture, you mentioned the people of unoccupied France. I didn't know there were any people living in unoccupied France." JUNIOR EBELL TEA "Home" was the theme of the spring dessert bridge tea given Saturday afternoon by members of the Junior Ebell club in the clubhouse at North Helena street. Several scenes of American homes and people were displayed in a decorative way on the walls of the clubhouse. Three miniature homes were placed among potted palms to feature the stage arrangement. Miss Jane Deming, violinist, appeared as guest soloist during the afternoon and played several numbers suggestive of the main theme. RR Commission Urges Governments To Aid In Rubber Conservation Urging all city, county, state and Federal government agencies to cooperate to the utmost the California Railroad commission moved this week to preserve highway transportation in the state by launching a campaign to conserve tires. A letter was dispatched by the commission to 9,000 operators of 40,000 commercial motor vehicles coming under California jurisdiction, asking immediate action in cutting the disastrous effect on tires of high speeds and overloading. GRAPHICALLY ILLUSTRATING Graphically illustrating their point the commission cited that for example, tires rotated at a speed of 35 miles per hour yielded an average of 30,000 miles of wear; at 45 miles an hour, 24,400; and at 55 miles, only 16,500. The effect of overloading was demonstrated in the statement that a 20 per cent overload cuts down mileage from 30,000 to 21,000 and a 50 per cent excess reduces mileage to 12,000. Trojans’ Loss Is the Navy’s Gain As Coach “Sam” Barry Enlists Jess Cravath, former line coach under the late Howard Jones and coach at San Francisco University, is now head football coach at USC, replacing Sam Berry who joined the Navy. The University of Southern California’s loss was the Navy’s gain this week as Justin M. “Sam” Barry, head football coach for the Trojans, was commissioned a lieutenant commander in the US Naval Reserve for service as a physical director for aviation cadets. Barry will leave immediately for 30 days’ indoctrination at Annapolis before taking his post as athletic director at the new naval air cadet training center at St. Mary’s college. Joining Barry in the Navy’s vast program to condition its naval and Marine Corps personnel were his two assistants at U.S.C., Julie Bascos, end coach and head basketball coach, and Robert McNeish, backfield coach. Also inducted of Villanova, Pete Cawthorn of Texas Tech and others. Barry’s appointment left Southern California without a football coach for the 1942 season. Rationing Rules Given On Autos Rationing rules under which approximately 340,000 new 1942 passenger cars now in the dands of dealers and manufacturers are being rationed today to essential cars were issued recently by Price Administrator Henderson. The regulations went into effect last Sunday and cover more than 78 percent of the total available supplies. Although regulations cover a month period from March 2, about 140,000 new cars will be made available for sale to eligible civilian buyers against certificates issued by local rationing boards and to various Federal, state, and state agencies between March 2 and May 31. Also inducted this week was James "Jim" Blewett, former backfield coach at the University of California at Los Angeles. The new coaches are included in a new Navy physical program that will include such nationally-known college coaches as Fritz Crisler of Michigan, Jim Crowley of Fordham, Major Bernie Bierman of Minnesota, Clipper Smith of Villanova, Pete Cawthorn of Texas Tech and others. He began his grid career 19 years ago when the famous Jones was producing Big Ten champions at the University of Iowa. Barry was Jones' assistant and continued in this capacity when Jones came to Southern California. Barry also was head baseball and basketball coach at USC, and is credited with having abolished the center jump after goal in national basketball. Pacific Fruit Express To Spend $21,000,000 For Cars In 1942 Pacific Fruit Express, operator of the world's largest freight refrigerator car system, has been authorized to spend more than $21,000,000 for new cars, and for rebuilding and heavy repairs to equipment in 1942, it was announced today by Southern Pacific and Union Pacific, joint owners of the company. Orders for 2,000 new cars of the latest design are expected to be placed shortly, and it is hoped that deliveries will start before the end of this year or not later than early in 1943. In connection with the new construction program, PFE will completely rebuild 2500 of its cars during 1942 and 1943, such cars to be provided entirely with new bodies of the most improved type. Authorization has also been given for heavy repairs to 3,000 additional cars in the same period. The new equipment, to be constructed with steel frames, sheathing, ends and roofs, will feature convertible bunkers which can be collapsed to increase loading space when a bunker ice is not used. This is in line with the announcement last summer, that all of PFE's new and rebuilt cars would thereafter include the new type bunkers. Completion of the company's present program will result in 4500 cars being so equipped.
