Present besides the soldiers were Mr. and Mrs. William Wulf, Mrs. Vera Neckes, the Tessners and daughter, Veoda Mae. Pefer- CRANSTON ON TOUR WITH SAN CARLO OPERA COMPANY Albert Cranston, well-known local instructor, who has been a soloist for the San Carlo Opera company of New York for the past ten years, left Saturday on tour with the company in San Francisco. During the past week, Mr. Cranston sang in seven performances in Los Angeles and prompted Richard Wentworth, who was taking the place of the leading basso in the part of Methisto. JOHNSONS RESIDE IN SANTA ANA AFTER WEDDING VISITS SON Mrs. Kate Peterson of 318 South Bush street left yesterday to stay with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Carleton J. Peterson in Los Angeles. She plans to return Saturday. Fashions in Food Like the cut of your husband's new spring suit and the type of lapel gadgets you're wearing, the fashions in our food are changing—by necessity. THE SPICE FOR LIFE Spices that add life to the everyday menu are not seriously scarce and if Mrs. America uses flavorings and spices only when really needed, the flavors on the America's tables need not be changed. Mrs. America uses more pepper and mustard than she does any other spices. The Office of Price Administration's Consumer Division reports that we have two years' supply of pepper on hand. And the country's 1941 mustard crop was a good one—supplying for more seed than is usually needed in any one year. So these two "key" spices certainly present no problem. STILL AVAILABLE What of the others? Nutmeg for your custards and spice cakes, cloves to dot your hams and to your yearly supply of pickle, cinnamon for breakfast toast, vanilla to flavor your cakes and cookies—these and many others are still available. But remember that these spices come to you from Zanzibar, from the West Indies, from other distant corners of the globe. They are brought to you in ships which must carry strategic war materials. HANDLE WITH CARE So handle your family spice cabinet with care. Measure that teaspoon of cinnamon right into the cake batter, don't waste any of it. Don't help yourself to more mustard and ketchup than you're really going to eat. Maybe a little less vanilla in a favorite recipe would do for a while. You can probably think of other ways to "stretch" the spices you have. And the better the job you do, the longer you will be able to enjoy the flavors your family so much enjoys—your salads and sauces, your meats and your pickles, your puddings and pies. SAVE WHAT YOU CAN And when you've emptied one of those nice spice carts with sprinkler tops—a can that fits into your spice cabinet—maybe you'd better save it. Next year's supply may not come to you in such convenient form. Rikshaw Rambles A series of excerpts from the diary of Rev. JOHNSONS RESIDE IN SANTA ANA AFTER WEDDING Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Johnson, the former Miss Marion Blackburn of Santa Ana, are making their home at 1043½ West Third street, Santa Ana, following a wedding ceremony last week at the bride's parent's home in Santa Ana. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Johnson of 309 South Walnut street and his bride is the daughter of the M. L. Blackburns of Santa Ana. Mr. Johnson is a graduate of Anaheim high school and was formerly employed at the Fluor Construction company. He is now in the shipyards at San Pedro. The former Miss Blackburn graduated from Santa Ana high school in 1941 and has been active in many of the young people's organizations of that city. Famous Painter To Demonstrate Water Painting Tuesday Arthur Beaumont, well known painter of Los Angeles, will talk about and demonstrate water color painting at the meeting of the Orange County Art Teachers association at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, in the Little Theatre of Santa Ana high school. Mr. Beaumont,, who has a series of war ship paintings reproduced in the September, 1942 issue of National Geographic, has just completed 300 sketches of ships, sailors and soldiers made at many army camps and naval stations. He has also completed sixteen paintings for the war department. His sketches were taken from army and navy life at Fort Bennings, Carlyle Barracks, Fort Belvoir, Fort Story, Fort Monroe, New York and Washington. Mr. Beaumont was the only artist at the Carolina maneuvers and because his scope touches technical ability and because he is a fluent talker, the association is assured of an entertaining eve- A series of excerpts from the diary of Rev. Archie Crouch, former missionary to China, and son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. F. N. Gibbs of Anaheim. "MORE PROTECTION" At Anchor Off the Coast From Ku-gnao-t'ou August 27, 1941 We started on down the coast again this morning at 9 o'clock. Again we were stopped by a Japanese destroyer near the entrance to Ku-gnao-t'ou. They did nothing all day, and of course we could do nothing until we had clearance from them. They sent a boarding party over about sundown and had a long conference with the captain. LITTLE DIFFERENT The situation is a little different now. Before we were in the blockaded zone. Now we are south of it and have full rights of the seas (technically but not practically). The captain is trying to insist upon his rights to enter a free port not technically under the blockade. The Japanese insist that they are carrying on military operations at this point and that it would be dangerous for us to go in. In fact, they cannot allow us to endanger ourselves. BOARDING PARTY The boarding party and the captain came to no agreement tonight. Finally they went back to their ship saying that they would bring us final word in the morning. One of the techniques used by Orientals is endless delay. It is often highly exasperating to Americans and British who prize the value of time. However, this time all of us are just as willing to stick to the job as they are willing to slow it up. If it is nothing more than a matter of annoying delay we can take as much as they can hand out.
