National Brotherhood Week
Dedicated this year to the study of the part religion plays in a democracy, National Brotherhood Week opened today across the nation with an appeal by President Franklin D. Roosevelt for all Americans to join in the observance.
To continue through Feb. 22, the event is planned to create better understanding among the various racial and religious groups in America.
As part of the observance, 200 churches and synagogues in Southern California will receive students from UCLA and Los Angeles City college in their pulpits from Friday, Feb. 20 to Sunday, Feb. 22. The young people will speak on "Brotherhood in America Today" and the work of the University Religious conference which is sponsoring Brotherhood Week in the Southland.

Anaheim Civilian Defense Volunteers Are 201 Greater Than One Month Ago
Ranks of Mother Colony Civilian Defense volunteers swelled today to 1,246,201 more than at this time last month, and according to defense officials most of the manpower recruited has been placed with one of the branches of home defense in the city.
The city engineer's office today were considering plans for a new air warning watchtower which will be erected by the city on property just back of the municipal power house.
The structure, to be set on poles is to be seven by eight feet with platforms on two sides, and accessible by a stairway.
It is to be equipped with telephone and heated electrically, for shifts of some 120 air warning service volunteers who watch for aircraft in pairs 24 hours a day.
Doing a Wartime Job
The 3,700 motor vehicles of this company on the Pacific Coast, the more than 39,000 men and women who maintain and operate telephone service, are a mechanized, mobilized army in the service of communication.
Telephone workers can be counted on to play their part in the added effort that so many millions of workers throughout the nation are making today.
While it is necessary that our lines be readily available for telephone calls important to the wartime job, you may be sure that each telephone employee will do his or her level best to give you the finest service possible under existing conditions.
Whether in peace or war, the tradition "The Message Must Go Through" uppermost in their minds.

TO CURE a case of flat-itis" so pervalent in the United States and to state the accuracy for alarmists would evacuate industry in Southern California to farther away from the edge of war action, the Los Angeles County Chamber of Commerce today issued the above map prepared by the staff of the Mt. Wilson observatory.
The map, mathematically accurate and projected from a globe of the world as it is, shows the relative distances from points in the United States to Tokyo and to Havre on the French invasion coast—the darker it is the nearer is the enemy.
It all goes to prove, according to the chamber that all parts of the Pacific coast are further from scene of action than most other parts of the United States.
