Spare Those Tires!
Rigid rationing of tires has brought the reality of war home to every motorist and truck owner. But to every patriotic motorist his personal inconvenience is of minor concern in light of the grave import of national shortages in essential war materials.
Since tire rationing was proclaimed, the Navy has asked the public to turn in all corks from bottles and rubber scraps in form of sample sections of tires. Why? The corks are needed in the treatment of fractured cases to cover the ends of pins in the plaster casts, and rubber is needed for attachment to the bottoms of walking irons attached to casts on broken logs.
Those are grim needs. But the war is grim—and waste is grimly serious. Don't throw away paper, rubber, wool, cork or metal of any kind, and watch the papers for lists of vital materials to be conserved in home and business. Let tires be a symbol of conservation. Don't scrape rubber from tire treads by sudden starts, stops, excessive speeds. Don't waste anything. Don't abuse any equipment you use. Waste not—and win the war.

Has the fifth column really gone? Doubtless most of the paid foreign agents are under lock and key. Yet rumors and hot tips continue scurrying around, creating suspicion and uneasiness—two evils showing how ably Dame Rumor can serve as a stand-in for the fifth columnist.
It's human nature to gossip, and the more startling and unbelievable the gossip is, the faster it travels. No official bans will ever completely suppress the dissemination of unfounded or distorted reports. But at the least, we should pledge ourselves to treat such stories with skepticism, knowing that if there were a grain of truth in the original report, by the time it has reached the fourth or fifth party, even its original author wouldn’t recognize it.
Rumors are damaged goods. Return to sender unclaimed.

CHRIST SCIENTIST
125 N. Philadelphia
These words of the Psalmist,
"How excellent is thy loving kindness, O God! For with Thee is the fountain of life," constitute the Golden Text in the Lesson-Sermon of "Life" on Sunday in all Churches of Christ, Scientist.
One of the Bible citations includes these verses about Jesus from Matthew: "And when He was departed thence, He went into their synagogue: And, behold, there was a man which has his hand withered. And they asked Him, saying, 'Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath days?' that they might accuse Him. And He said unto them, 'What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the Sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the Sabbath days.
Then saith He to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other."

Farmers Must State Needs At Once
Says Orange County Farm Bureau
Making it imperative that farmers anticipate at once their needs
for machinery, equipment, and
supplies for the coming year and
give their orders to dealers and
manufacturers, is latest informamation received from federal authorities by the Orange County
Farm Bureau today.
Donald M. Nelson, director of Supply Priorities and Allocations board, speaking-before the national convention of Farm Bureau early this month, specially suggested making application for supplies of insecticides, fungicides and fumigants.
NEW MACHINERY
New machinery will be limited to 80 per cent of the 1940 supply, and repairs 150 per cent. So it is considered advisable to keep present machinery in repair rather than tax the supply of new machinery.
Until recently farmers were greatly excited over an anticipated total use of an all output of caterpillar tractors by defense units. A recent modification will allow small type caterpillars, if the proper procedure is followed. Individual purchasers are asked to fill out PD-1 blanks which may be obtained from the Contract Distribution service of the Office of Production Management, San Francisco.

Telephone Company President Gives Statement of Policy To Employees
Released this week to all employees of the Southern California Telephone company, was the following statement by N. R. Powley, president of the organization:
"To Our Telephone Men and Women:
Prior to the tragic events of Dec. 7, 1941, we were engaged in devoting our efforts to national defense. We are now in an armed conflict.
Our country can move no faster than its communication services. We all have the great responsibility 'to get the message through.'"
Notwithstanding the splendid work which we have done and are doing, it is required of each of us that we not only intensify but also redouble our efforts to make certain that we render the best possible telephone service in these trying and critical times.
Each individual in each department of our company has the responsibility to put forth an all-out effort in whatever work in which he or she is engaged, thus welding us all in a united effort, to win this crucial war. We are faced with the biggest job which has ever confronted us. Our patriotic duty is to do, and to do with a will, the work for which our industry exists.
