Aircraft Plants Consolidate Forces In Production of Long Range Bombers Designed to step up production of four-engine long range bombers in accordance with government programs, Douglas Aircraft company announced this week it had awarded subcontracts amounting to $125,000,000 for plane production with major automobile manufacturing concerns. Under a cooperative plan with Boeing and Vega by which months of precious time already have been saved, Douglas will turn out record numbers of B-17F's, latest model of the Boeing-designed "Flying Fortress." Employing plans and specifications furnished by Boeing, tooling-up and preliminary production of B-17 parts is now under way at the Douglas Long Beach plant employing a number of Anaheim residents. According to the company, the first of new "Flying Fortress" orders are spread among a dozen companies, and include all types of parts and assemblies from landing gear to fuel tanks and wings. At the same time, it was announced that vitally needed attack-bomber and military transport subassemblies built under subcontracts placed early this year are now flowing steadily and smoothly from midwestern industrial centers to the Douglas plant at Long Beach. Railroad Workers Really Soldiers Says Jeffers Stressing the importance in the face of present serious emergency of safe expeditious handling of war materials and personnel, W. M. Jeffers, president of the Union Pacific railroad said this week that he considered every railroad man just as much in military service of this government as if he were in uniform. "Above all things," Jeffers said, "it is important that no chances be taken. We are handling vital defense shipments daily on passenger train schedules. A derailment or accident that delays traffic is a major disaster." Barnstorming Clowns Beat 20-30 Club Phelan Trust Fund Announces Awards In Literature Trustees of the estate of Senator James D. Philadelphia "Christian Science" is the subject of the Lesson-Sermon on Sunday n all Churches of Christ, Scientist. The Golden text is from Matthew: "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give." One of the passages from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, states: "Our master said, 'But the Comforter . . . shall teach you all things.' When the Science of Christianity appears, it will lead you into all truth. The Sermon on the Mount is the essence of this Science, and the eternal life, not the death of Jesus, is its outcome." SPOOK CHASING Chasing spooks from caves needed for bomb-proofs. Ancient haunts of some of England's most celebrated ghosts now being usurped by blitz victims for much-needed air raid shelters. Warning that proper allotments of repair parts for farm equipment can only be made if farmers will notify their machinery dealers and equipment houses what their needs will be for next season. Farm Advisor Harold E. Wahlberg said today that only limited supplies will be available as military demands increase. INVENTORY TIME This is a good time to take inventory of necessary repairs and get the information in to the dealers, he stated. The latter in turn will present these orders as evidence and advise the manufacturers who will receive their allotments from the Office of Production Management. Necessary replacement items will receive priority ratings over new items, according to instructions just received by the Orange county USDA Defense board from the state board. If new items other than replacements are sought for the increased food program, the local USDA Defense board will be called upon for factual information as to the need for such equipment, according to instructions from the state board. The earlier the farmers' requirements are made known, the less the interruptions caused in the spring planting program. Defense production effort is reaching new peaks each day and critical shortages of metals and other raw materials may be anticipated by all industries. FIFTEEN GUESTS Mr. and Mrs. F. A.
