St. Michael’s Given Complete Repairs; Oldest Church Here Sixty-nine years old in the Spring. That’s how old St. Michael’s Episcopal church and parish at 225 E. Adele st. will be. It is one of the oldest parishes in this vicinity and like all things that grow old, remodeling becomes necessary. A new roof has just been completed on the Rectory, according to the Rev. D. Howard Dow, Rector. Rev. Dow also reported that the painting on the outside will be completed this week while the interior remodeling will be finished in ten days. Police Will Get You If You Poke Along More than 3,000 drivers have been stopped, warned, or given citations since the war on “slow poke” driving was launched some three months ago, the Department of Motor Vehicles announced today. A majority of the vehicles involved were heavy trucks traveling at speeds so slow as to cause long lines of traffics to form behind them and create safety hazards. A considerable number, however, were vehicles of the jallopy type traveling at snail's pace. The increase is attributed to the sharp expansion in war industries. During the first half of this year, according to the report, operations in civilian goods expanded rapidly, but during recent months many of these industries have beenelled to restrict operation because of material shortage. US Bill of Rights 150 Years Old The American Bill of Rights, 150 years old on Monday of this week, is commemorated today through Sunday, Dec. 21, by an historical exhibition of rare books, manuscripts, and pamphlets at the Huntington library, San Marino. The exhibition features a rare little four-page pamphlet printed at Boston, 1790, containing the twelve proposed amendments submitted by the First Congress to the State of Massachusetts for ratification. A rare contemporary copy of the British Declaration of rights of 1689, formulated upon the accession of William and Mary, is included in the display, to show the almost verbatim borrowing of the Americans from the document. The American Bill of Rgihts is that zealously guarded part of the Constitution which guarantees to citizens such fundamental rights as freedom of speech and of the press. Forest Fire Danger Almost Over Now Forest Rangers Say Crediting public enlightment through press, radio, magazines, commercial advertising, and the educational work of conservationists for fire prevention for a season unusually low in man-caused fires today, Uncle Sam's national forest rangers and supervisors of the California region breathed deeply and thankfully. The fire season is almost over. In each of the 18 national forests of California and southwestern Nevada, and Forest Service records show an unusually low number of fires for the year. "That's good news to rangers," declared Regional Forester S. B. Show, "because it reveals that the public is becoming fire prevention conscious—an important factor in safeguarding scenic recreational resources for the 10 million vacationists who annually visit the national forests of the California region." This season's man-caused fires in the national forests of the region totaled 766, compared to 874 last year an annual average of 890 for the past five years. Lightning started 347 forests fires during 1941. Cost of suppressing the current year's fires, which burned 103,400 acres, amounted to $600,000 for lumber, substance, transportation and equipment. In fact, there are a great number of non-defense businesses that are actually profitably increased civilian consumption, particularly those which are not dependent upon materials subject to priorities. Record Yule Sales Ahead Says State Record breaking sales tax revenue for 1941, based on receipts totaling $90,801,560 for the first three quarters of the year with an unprecedented revenue of $33,293,-968 for the third quarter, is expected today by the State Board of Equalization. "Because of heavy holiday buying," Wm. G. Bonelli, board representative said, "the fourth quarter is always the best in the year for sales tax revenue. Christmas buying should be heavier this year than for several years past, due to greatly increased payrolls," he stated. "Keeping these factors in mind," Bonelli continued, "I believe a revenue of around $30,000,000 is a conservative estimate for the final quarter which would mean a total revenue of approximately $120,00,-000." 5 SHOPPING Days Left Till Xmas G BE REMEMBERED!
