The above figure exceeds last year's total by 80 million. PRICE INCREASE The slight price increase is not attributed to rising leather costs but largely to higher costs in shipping and handling charges. Most hides are not imported except kid skins and tanning materials from such far-away countries as Rhodesia, Turkey, Caledonia, South Africa and Argentina, there is no fear of leather shortages. Stocks adequate to fill our needs for several months are on hand. These supplies can be replendished without too much difficulty. SHOE-BUYING POINTERS Miss Harriet Elliott, chief of the Consumer Division and Associate Administrator of the Price Administration office, has offered some pointers when shoes are being purchased that will ease the pinch of higher prices: 1. Buy your shoes comfortable. 2. Stand up when you get your feet measured. 3. Be sure that the shoe is one-half inch longer than your foot. 4. High-heeled shoes should be used only for dress occasions. 5. If a shoe is a good fit. At least one live bait boat will operate from Long Beach the season through. According to skippers of fishing boats plying this section, many varieties of sport fish, such as bonito, white sea bass, yellowtail, bluefin, and yellowfin tuna, are in the waters of Catalina channel during all or part of the winter season. Usually during September and October each year, all the Long Beach fleet of some 25 fishing boats stop operating. It is believed, however, that any boat which will work for sport fish can make catches throughout the year. IT'S GOOD TO KNOW Dimmers Unknown Says Auto Chief Surprising as it may sound, a considerable number of drivers in California do not know there is a headlight dimming device on their vehicles, according to a dispatch today from the State Department of Motor Vehicles. According to engine verification agents employed by the Department of Motor Vehicles, motorists cited for minor infractions such as defective tail lights, mufflers and rear view mirrors, frequently profess ignorance of the existence or location of this device. Department authorities point out that in practically all late model cars, the button is located slightly to the left of the clutch pedal where it can be reached conveniently with the left foot. On a few older models the dimmer is operated by hand from the steering post or the dash board. Soap Conservation By Consumers Needed Due To Shortage Of Shipping Facilities Because in the making of soaps, the basic materials used are from points where shipping facilities are limited, housewives and other consumers are asked to conserve soap and soap products to the fullest extent in the interest of the national defense program. Many basic fats and alkalis come from the East Indies, from South America and Europe where they cannot be obtained because shipping facilities are very limited. FIRST STEP—GOOD BUYING In order to conserve, one of the first steps is in good buying. Housewives should buy soap for a specific need. For toilet purposes, a mild neutral soap is best. Higher priced soaps may be harder milled, hence longer lasting, but often packaging, perfumes and advertising account for added costs. For general household laundering and cleaning, stronger soaps may be used. It has been found more economical to use water softeners such as borax and trisodium phosphate directly with a cheaper soap than to buy a soap with the softener in it. HOUSEWIVES ADVISED Housewives are advised to purchase soaps in fairly large quantities. Bars should be unwrapped and the soap allowed to dry out. It will then keep without disintegrating for an indefinite time. If package flakes or powder is used, extreme care should be exercised against waste, since more soap is wasted by careless use of this type than in any other way.
