Rt. Rev. Peter Trimble Rowe, Age 85, Covers Alaskan Missions By Plane Growing impatient at the gait made on snow shoes, dog sleds and even in his motor boat, Peter Trimble Rowe, oldest bishop of the Episcopal church in active service, who celebrated his 85th birthday recently, took to the air to keep his clerical appointments in the Alaskan territory he serves. The airplane is now his favorite vehicle of travel both in winter and summer. Veteran of gold-rush and mushing days in Alaska, Bishop Rowe has just concluded his 46th season in the far north and returned to Seattle where he has spent his winters in late years. DOG TEAMS During his episcopate, he has mushed behind dog teams over a distance which he estimates as 600,000 miles. Bishop Rowe recalls that when he went to Alaska as bishop, his church had only three missions in the 586,000 square miles of territory. It was a "rough, tough, but generous" Alaska the Bishop re-calls, speaking of one of his first sermons preached to the sourdoughs in a Fairbanks saloon. The proprietor, Cy Marx, a Jew, started the collection with a $10 bill and raised $1,400. GOLD RUSH In those gold rush days, Bishop Rowe bunked with Rex Beach, who put him in a book, and Jack London, who learned about handling dog teams from the Bishop. The Bishop is straight, ruddy, over six feet tall, active, and vigorous, physically and mentally. He is a bit critical of the present generation, feeling that "The youth of the present era are entirely too soft. They want the good things of life served them on a platter. MORE ADVENTURERS "We need more of the type who dared the unknown solely for adventure. He may not have been chock full of morals, but he was sincere and at bottom good and true as any man," the Bishop concluded.
