"Do You Get Enought To Eat, Son?" Ask Most Mothers Of Draftees Inquiry of soldiers today reveals that the women of America are vitally interested in the welfare of their men who are now in Uncle Sam's army or may be in it soon. Apparently some of the questions most frequently asked of trainees and soldiers by mothers, wives and sweethearts are: 1. "Do you have a good bed to sleep on in camp?" 2. "Do they give you enough cover?" 3. "Do you get enough to eat?" 4. "Is it the right kind of food?" ALL INFORMATION According to all information that could be obtained from recipients of personal letters from men in the service, the soldiers are doing very well, thank you, and most of them apparently have gained weight and are in fine physical ed an average of nearly 6½ pounds—6.46 pounds to be exact—since they entered service. Equally important, the survey reveals that overweight soldiers have been trimmed down considerably, some as much as 30 or 40 pounds, indicating that mothers of lads who were "extra stout" when they entered service will have to take a second look before recognizing their physically fit sons when they come home. SUFFICIENT FOOD The health of the soldier is a major consideration of the Quartermaster Corps, which not only sees that he gets a sufficient quantity of food of the best quality, but also that the food procured provides a health-giving vitamin-loaded, balanced ration. Meat, milk, fish, butter, eggs, cheese, poultry, fresh fruits and vegetables and canned orchard products stand high on the list. In fact, almost Fullerton Students Will Present Christmas Plays Dickens' famous "Christmas Carol" will be presented by the combined music and drama departments of Fullerton union high school and district junior college as their annual Christmas play Dec. 17 and 18. Mrs. Esther Litchfield, director, announced this week. The play will be given three performances, two on Dec. 17 and one performance Thursday evening, Dec. 18. The matinee performance on Dec. 17 will be for high school assembly but there will be room for 300 outside guests. As in the past, the play was presented without charge as a traditional Christmas offering by the two schools. ANNUAL PRODUCTION The performance this year is the 13th annual production to the year's selection, "Gloria," "Winter Chimes Rang," and "The Other Wise Man." Major players in the production this year are Winfield Rainbow and Kenneth Nelson, alternates the role of Scrooge; Charles Hertler, Fullerton, as Fred; Jack Wilson, Anaheim, as Bob Cratchen; Charles Hart, Fullerton, as Mailey's ghost; Mary McManus, Fullerton, as the spirit of Christmas past. THE PLAYERS Howard Seelye, Whittier, as the spirit of Christmas present; Els Myers, Whittier, as the spirit of Christmas future; Douglas Phillips, as the butcher boy; and Om Passon, Huntington Beach, as Clark Terrill, Fullerton, as the two gentlemen. of them apparently have gained weight and are in fine physical shape. Now comes a scientific report carefully preserved in the office files of Colonel F. J. Riley, Quartermaster Supply Officers for the San Francisco General depot at Fort Mason, Calif., which transfers the general impression of soldier well-being into the realm of fact. This quartermaster agency procures most of the food for the Ninth Corps area, the Philippines and Hawaii, as well as ten items-of foodstuffs for the entire army of the United States. WEIGHT SURVEY A weight survey recently completed at Fort Ord, Calif., by Major Frederick B. Westervelt, division surgeon, during which 811 men were checked for weight, reveals that 80 per cent of them gained a total of 5,253 pounds or 2.62 tons since induction. Computations also show that the men have each gain- everything eaten that is eaten in a well managed home has its place on the Army menu. Preparation of meals necessarily lacks the "personal touch" of home but the food is of the finest quality, prepared by trained and experienced Army chefs. SLEEPING COMFORT As for sleeping comfort, it may be surprising to many civilians to know that the soldier like the civilians spends approximately a third of his life in bed. It is very important that he has a good night's rest. At most camps in the Ninth Corps Area, he is issued by the Quartermaster Corps a steel bed, mattress, pillow. Two mattress covers, two pillow cases, four wool blankets and four cotton sheets. NEW MYSTERY SERIAL Thrill! Suspense! Surprise! Two-Thirds of Public Have Motor Vehicles With two out of every three families in the United States owning automobiles today, the movement of the American people to “personalized” transportation one of the outstanding social and economic phenomena of all history, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California. Since 1935 passenger car registrations in the United States have increased by approximately 5,000,000. The growth has taken place chiefly among families that depend upon used cars for their transportation. National studies reveal that 55 per cent of the annual mileage of all cars is in connection with the earning of a livelihood and close related activities. Half of the car owning families have incomes of less than $30 per week, and half of the cars operating on the highways of America have a cash value of less than $100. Since the average burden of state and federal automotive tax now amounts to more than $4 annually, the tax load on a majority of the motor vehicles is excess of half of their cash value.
