When completed, the project will comprise one of the finest public recreational areas in southern California."
Judge Pacht said that the establishment of the Prison forestry camps was part of the progressive penology program for California, inaugurated by the Board of Prison Directors. It is proposed to establish similar forestry camps in other sections of the state later.
"While we have had prison road camps for many years," explained Judge Pacht, "the forestry camp offers a new outlet for constructive work for men in our state prisons."
Our road camps have proven one of the most useful and effective means of correcting delinquency and helping rehabilitate men. Only inmates who have proven by their prison conduct that they can be placed upon their honor in prison camps are allocated for this work. The same policy will be pursued in regard to the forestry camps.
Prisoners sent to the camps, for the main part, will be those shorty to be paroled or discharged. Men in the road camps present practically no problem of policing, nor will they in the forestry camps.
Just as at the road camps, the prisoner working in the forestry projects will be paid approximately $2.50 per day for his labor, if which about two-thirds will be deducted for transportation and maintenance, leaving about fifty cents a day to be accumulated for his account against the date of his discharge.

Rites Saturady for Mattie C. Barfoot
Mattie C. Barfoot, 66, a native of Oakwood, Ontario, Canada who as a girl at the age of six came to the United States and for twenty years, has been a resident of California. For twelve years she has lived on the ranch at the corner of Vermont and Los Angeles streets. She is survived by her husband, George Barfoot, six daughters, Mrs. Melvin Larsen of Inglewood; Mrs. Floyd Hutchinson of Illinois; Mrs. Ruth Brown and Mrs. Gordon Hess of Anaheim; Mrs. Ben Hemmerling of Fullerton; Mrs. Ada Knox of Iowa; two sons, George Barfoot of Iowa and Vincent Barfoot of Anaheim and fourteen grandchildren. She was a member of the White Temple Methodist church, the Eastern Star and of the Ebell Club.
Funeral services, under the direction of the Hilgenfeld mortuary, will be conducted from the White Temple church Saturday at 3 o'clock. The Rev. Thomas L. Burden, pastor of the church, will officiate and burial will be made in the family plot in the Fairhaven cemetery.
thousands of dollars spent in fighting these forest fires. Much of this loss can be prevented by utilizing, under proper policing, the labor of men now confined in our prisons.
"There is a vast amount of labor available in the state prisons which can be put to constructive use in such camps and other avenues which will not interfere or seriously compete with free labor."
Members of the Board of Prison Directors, who authorized the establishment of the new forestry area.
Just as at the road camps, the prisoner working in the forestry projects will be paid approximately $2.50 per day for his labor, if which about two-thirds will be deducted for transportation and maintenance, leaving about fifty cents a day to be accumulated for his account against the date of discharge.
The establishment of the forestry camps will constitute an additional safety valve for men in San Quentin and Folsom prisons, and the California Institution for Men at Chino in San Bernardino County, Prison Directors believe it will also afford those given the privilege of camp work a different point of view than that which is forced upon them as a result of confinement in a barred cell.
Year after year, millions of dollars in valuable brush and timber are destroyed by fire in California parks and forests and many of this loss can be prevented by utilizing, under proper policing, the labor of men now confined in our prisons.
“There is a vast amount of labor available in the state prisons which can be put to constructive use in such camps and other avenues which will not interfere or seriously compete with free labor.”
Members of the Board of Prison Directors, who authorized the establishment of the new forestry camp program are: Judge Isaac Pacht, President; George H. Briggs, Los Angeles; Dr. W. Earle Smith, Piedmont; Henry B. Cramer, San Diego; and Judge P. J. McLaughlin, Salinas.
Keith Beebe, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Beebe of 738 N. Philadelphia St., was home last weekend nursing an injured knee received from football practice last week. Keith is a junior at Occidental College and plays fullback on the football team.
